The Annual E3 general discussion thread, 2015 edition

But the whole FF7 Remake exclusivity thing seems to also be quite ambiguous. First at the Sony conference they say it will come 'first' to PS4. Then at the Square conference itself, they said it's being developed 'for PS4'.

Easy. It'll come out for the PS4 first at 1080p 60FPS + Morpheus support.
And then they'll scale it down to 900p "variable framerate" so that it'll fit the XBone's weaker hardware.

But worry not. In order to play FFVII at its best quality using the XBone, all you have to do is run the game in a high-end PC and connect it to the HDMI input of the XBOne, which is something the PS4 can't do.
:D

The real issue is that Microsoft will then pay Square Enix to make the Crysis Core remake as a lifelong XBone exlusive.

I also thought that it could mean 'exclusive forever, coming out in the holiday period 2015'. But I'd bet my mother on the simple fact that if MS really did get TR as an exclusive forever, they'd be shouting that very clearly from the rooftops.

Why does it have to be decided right now that it's exclusive forever? Maybe they have some kind sales clause that says they can get full exclusivity if it meets or doesn't meet a certain sales target? Maybe they get an option to purchase exclusivity after it ships? I think those possibilities are why both Microsoft & Crystal Dynamics haven't been more forthcoming with on its timed-exclusive deal. Not sure if we will find out for sure before it ships, but if we do it will be due to the pre-orders.

On an un-Tomb Raider related note, aren't there supposed to be a bunch of games, particularly those shown by MS, that are available to be played at E3?

Where are the reviews, reports, stories, etc... about how these games actually played? I'm really far more interested in hearing about that, than any of the glitzy marketing shows put on, and especially more interested in those than watching pre-rendered cgi 2 minute movies that don't even show game play.

its out there , giantbomb talked about playing a bunch of stuff during their podcast /video casts

Not really. The 'Holiday 2015' means nothing regards release date because the release date is explicit. Nov 10th. So that Holiday 2015 on a separate line must be in relation to the exclusivity, ergo XB1 has it exclusively over the holiday, other platforms have it later. How much later is unknown.

I am still doubtful this is coming to PS4. The exclusivity part could also mean in regards to PC [as the other platform(s)]. Lets remember; Tomb Raider was/is huge on the PC too. But L-B probably isn't incorrect either; fair enough that he his willing to better his mother that Microsoft would be shouting it from the rooftops if it was a life-time exclusive. I'd be too. If not and it is, .... L-B, is your mum hot? :D

MS have used the term lifetime exclusive recently (for Games that are also on pc but go figure) they haven't used such a term for tomb raider so I think it's unlikely to remain just on Xbox.

I don't think it really matters though. It cannot compete with Uncharted on ps4 in my opinion.

Well, I'd still like to play it. Now chances are it might come out on PS4 round the time when 200 other great games are released, and that's not good for my wallet. Then again, who cares. I'm rich.

If you are rich why is this even a problem for you, just get an Xbox and play it ;)
It doesn't fit with the gold drapes, geraniums and ceramic tigers in my house.

Also, I'd go from simply being "the guy with a playstation" who likes games and good movies from "the uber nerd with a PS4 AND an Xbox". That's just not right. I have a reputation to defend.

They just did that with Ashen and Cuphead communicating a "lifetime" console exclusivity and the games are also releasing on PC.

Tomb Raider sells more on PS brand, there is no way Square Enix would abandon the Playstation ecosystem for this game (and imagine the negative impact on all future games). They said the deal had a duration, the holidays. After the holidays, no more Microsoft deal, it looks clear to me.

It's a timed exclusivity, exactly like No man's sky or Final Fantasy 7. It's just that Sony this generation is just more honest than Microsoft and (quickly when a game is announced) call (or let the devs do the communication) a timed exclusivity for what it is, a timed exclusivity and not some misleading PR "Deal with a duration" or "holidays exclusive" in order to instill doubt in the head of some.

Yep Sony certainly handle the whole timed exclusive v real exclusive infinitely better than ms.

Which is probably why ms continue to get grief about it and Sony don't.

This is the biggest risk of lifetime console exclusivity for a single title in a seriees.

If there is any sort of continuity between the games (Tomb Raider 2013 to Rise, Rise to the next one) then cutting one platform (PlayStation) out midway through may impact sales of the next game on that skipped platform - assuming they intend to return to a multiplatform model in the future.

If this was the cae, as a developer/publisher, you would want Microsoft to be footing the cost of lost sales on what is currently the bigger platform (PS4) as well as people who may skip the next game because of the exlcusivity for the second game.

Not only is that a lot of money, it's difficult to calculate. Personally I think it's a bad time to launch a game like Tomb Raider because this window is already crazily crowded. It would have made more of an impact if Tomb Raider was launching in an otherwise desolate period release-wise.

Well if that was really the case, and Rise doesn't come out on PS4 at all, we wouldn't be missing much in terms of story anyway. I mean, Lara goes to unidentified Asian location, runs around, kills people, kills unidentified superhuman things, finds unidentified amulet, finds unidentified supernatural entity 'protecting' the location, saves some people maybe, kills or seals supernatural entity, the end.
