Square-Enix Acquires Unreal Engine 3 License

Didn't SE have a (polished) realtime demo for 360 at e3 2005? If they did this would imply they have an engine already for 360. I was under the impression that MS tools let you take 360 engines and quickly port this codebase to pc.:???:

But still, is the white engine so exclusively made for the PS3 that it can not be adjusted to run on the 360 or PC? I am a bit surprized with this announcement...

Anything can be "adjusted" to run on 360 and PC. It's just that if the engine uses Cell and the SPUs extensively, together with using the 35GB link between Cell and RSX for all sorts of things, and is heavily optimised for that, it would be rather time-consuming to try and port that over totally different architectures such as a PC.

IMO SE is after the virtual displacement mapping technology in UE3. It allows much better looking 3D models and in the right hands like SE's... ;)
Fixed it for you..
For a moment I thought you were serious. :D

UE3 doesn't seem bad choice for multiplatform games and if FFX? online is under development, it is very likely that SE wants all players to be able to share the servers regardless on which platform they use.
For something like that UE3 should work like charm.

As much as I'm excited about a SE rpg coming to 360, enough with the UE3!

I'm sick of these jaggies, can we please get some engines that can make use of Xenos to provide proper 4xAA like promised? K, thx!

Square Enix Licenses Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3

Middleware to be Utilized in Square Enix's Next-Generation Game Development Process

Tokyo, Japan, (Jan. 25, 2007) – Square Enix Co., Ltd. today announced a licensing agreement with Epic Games that enables Square Enix to introduce Epic’s Unreal® Engine 3 middleware into its next-generation game development process.

Square Enix has built its highly successful franchises such as FINAL FANTASY®, DRAGON QUEST® and KINGDOM HEARTS by pushing game consoles to their limits and providing unparalleled user experiences for more than 20 years. This was achieved through the company’s proprietary technologies, which were mostly optimized for each game given the limited resources of game consoles. However, in order to ensure both game quality and development efficiency for next-generation game systems including consoles, PCs and network titles, Square Enix is now building a technology platform to be used throughout the company utilizing proprietary technologies as well as introducing third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 3.

“The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development. However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform,â€
said Taku Murata, General Manager, Research and Development Division, Square Enix, Co., Ltd. “The technology platform for game development is becoming more important than ever. I'm excited to be partnering with Epic Games in such an important area.â€

“We’re extremely excited to be working with Square Enix,†said Jay Wilbur, Vice President, Epic Games, Inc. “Square Enix is one of the biggest and most influential companies in the world-wide game business, and having them work with Unreal Engine 3 is a major honor for us and something we’re very proud to be announcing.â€

I agree. Theres lots of engines(spare the jokes ok? :p ) out there, and I dont know why companies wont use those instead. The only other engine I know thats also popular among devs is the source engine, but the rest is kinda "nah, we'll use UE3 instead" :|

I guess its really that easy and simple to use

I just hope they don't use the Vin Diesel model that seems to come as standard in the UE3 engine, under the "Main Character" menu.... I'd cry if even a Final Fantasy game fell for the Vin Diesel curse that plagues all UE3 engines.

That's very arguable. It was definietly more "western friendly" than previous offerings, but that hardly means it was made for the west first.

Point is they made a conscious effort to make the game western friendly. They know the west is a very important market and Japanese gamers will buy whatever FF game comes out regardless so it would not surprise me to see FF ported to 360 to attain more US sales.

Sure. You can get the sample code on google ,but they thought it was smarter to buy the 1 million$ plugin to do it...

Then why doesn't their next generation game look anything like UE3's displacement mapped models in terms of detail? FF looks pretty weak when it comes to character model detail.

The UE3 ' virtual displacement' is used only on static geometry (eg framed wall) ,never on characters ,because it would look very bad (problems :angle of view, self shadowing ,casted/received shadow ... ).
Now ,(and because i would fully agree with this reason )i think it's a mater of artistic choice.

agreed. and yes Square has made an RPG for the Western World first in mind, it was called "Secret of Evermore".

You know. That chick they've shown is lacking high resolution normal mapping for zits, pimple and warts, lines and wrinkles. If SE were to use UE3.0 instead of their rubbishy White Engine, we could have lead female characters that look as detailed as this
