Square-Enix Acquires Unreal Engine 3 License

Once you've got an established engine, tailor made to your needs, that's producing some excellent results it seems, is it more efficient to spend $1 million per game on UE3.0, or maintain your current engine? I'd have thought the latter. If you didn't have an engine in the first place, third party makes sense. Or if your engine has dire tools and is a struggle to use.

How does SE work with it's sub-groups and partners? Would the White Engine be made available to, say, Level 5 for a DQ game? That might be something to consider.
