Sony's Gamers Day 2007

Also to point out flaws in the cover system doesn't necessarily disprove an opinion that Gears has the best implentation of a cover system. For example, what other games do you believe does it better?

RB6:Vegas and they did not rip off Gears.

Now would be a good time to drop the talk about GeOW controls, as some people are getting too excitable. It's a game control. Nothing much there for fanboy's to hold over the other console's fanboys, so why even mention fanboys? Even if U: DF has copied GeOW exactly, the developers originally intending gun combat to switch into a funfair shooting-gallery type minigame and then seeing GeOW as a much better idea, it's not a big deal. As long as the game's are fun!

Lara in Tomb Raider 2 was becoming tired after some running and slowing down considerably. (Almost) 10 years ago:LOL:
She did? I only remember her puffing

I think though that in some report they said that the character would go tired, but it was either switched off on the footage we saw or not noticed

I don't see the problem with the Gears/RE4 references. I was partially reminded of Gears too..in a very good way. If they can, as they say, successfully blend that with platforming/adventuring and hand-to-hand combat, in these sorts of settings and locales, it might just be my perfect kind of game.

One other thing - my little suggestion that Sony should manage a dozen or more releases in the rest of the year looks a little more solid now post Gamers-day :p Although I didn't expect so many of them to actually look as compelling as they do.

I've just arrived home from an overseas trip. Am really happy with the games in this order:

(1) LittleBigPlanet... E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T ! I love the level of customization and the possibilities. Look forward to the somewhat quirky music too. :)

Will Media Molecule start a build-to-order SacBoy eCommerce site ? In Asia (or Asian bookstores in US), people are already selling 2-inch tall "VooDoo" dolls similar to Sac-Boys (It's a coincidence).

(2) Drake's Fortune. I love the fluidity and the quickness. What's not obvious is the control. Will Nathan take cover or pop out of cover automatically ? This will simplify the game and let us focus on the puzzle and "action plan". Also will it use SIXAXIS to control the larger movement ? (e.g., dive forward, flip).

(3) Heavenly Sword. Agree with Shifty about large battlefield (Where is it ?). Everything is as expected. Am very glad that we have a new and good looking heroine on PS3. Nariko looks too fierce for my taste though :D Sorry... visited a KTV before I flew back.

(4) R&C. Heh heh... thanks for demoing the Disco Ball. I will buy the game just to play through the entire level using it.

(5) Lair. Still on my shopping list. Looks more stiff compared to the above games. But I hope the scale and the freedom of flight will make up for it. Have to play to find out.

Haven't looked at Folklore and Pain. Off to bed !

Whoah what a night.

Pain - I want! Just watch the trailer. It's damn amazing :D

Lair - didn't look as good as last time. The environments that were shown were more open and more varied and perhaps more appealing, but the game mechanics look (and sound) pretty dumb now, with the fireballs on auto-fire. The illusion that this is not the very same space shooter with lasers has crumbled for me somewhat. The framerate seems to shoot up to 60fps sometimes, which is impressive, but also not the right thing to do when most of the time it's just hitting thirty. The transition between the two states is what makes it feel jumpy. Please lock the game at 30fps, guys.

Folklore - not quite as magically compelling to me as the first showing (when it was called Monster Kingdom or somesuch), but now it has that modern-Castlevania vibe, what with the collectible, upgradeable enemy moves. Very nice to see that they're fleshing it out. The cutscene style is great.

Drake's Fortune - I have been skeptic for Naughty Dog's ability to make a cohesive gaming experience after being so confuddled with Jak 3, but I'm glad to hear that they have a proper plan for that now (the "three pillar: shoot, brawl, traverse" mumbo-jumbo). The game looks awesome, particularly most of the animations are good stuff, but strangely enough the walking/running animation stands out as sub-par IMO. Climbing up ledges looks a little disjoint from the ledge still but it's almost there.

LBP - didn't see anything new, just character customization. Yeah, that's nice, but that's not what I'm going to play. Have I missed new play footage?

Conan - no.

Warhawk - yes. And damn, it's fast for a console fps.

Eye Of Judgement - The presentation is awesome, and the game just might be deep, strategic fun, but I seriously can't see anyone playing it like this. Just play on a table kids.

Heavenly Sword - OMFGWTFYes!

High Velocity Bowling - What the hell. Might be great though. Five-dollars great.

Hot Shots Tennis - no. Looks much more tolerable than Virtua Tennis in every single way, but that still doesn't make me want to play it.

DId people notice the clever AI and animations of the Enemies in Uncharted? If you watch the Gamespot gamplay videos (there's 3)...Drake shoots one of the pirates in the arm...and the priate cringes and holds his arm where he was shot. I thought that was really cool!

Animations are fine and they even get pushed back when hit and then regain their balance, seems like physics and animation are blended together. All other games only apply physics after death.
AI looks pretty standard to me - get in line of sight and shoot. Dint see them taking cover or even teaming up, but I only seen short sequences.

I think there was a gameplay clip from a kiosk along with a talk with the dev, where they mentioned they looked closely at GeOW when working on combat, in which the enemy seemed to take cover. But I'm not entirely sure of that. I can't say I noticed the enemy reactions were good. Quite the converse, to me they looked rather silly. A guy got shot in the head, and collapsed gently to the floor in classic 'Dr Who death' style!

Yeah they need to make headshots fatal. Otherwise I thought it was incredile animation. And Drake's makes me go wow. It's just that its sooo good that a few flaws stand out, like the floating. But otherwise, colour me over impressed. And the textures are stunning.

What are you expecting? then to fly back through the air?

Mythbusters have already debunked that "movie" myth. People don't do it, they do just "collapse in a heap"

Yup R6:V was vastly better

Puh...leaze. Good game, almost finished it on hard, it's a good realistic slowpaced implementation, but 'vastly superior' is a joke.

In a non-tactical game it would pale in comparison to gears with it's speed and ease of use. The way gears allows you to sprint between cover, jump from one side of doorway to another, mantle objects, and slam yourself up walls(complete with grunt, particle effects and a facial animation) should all be standard for all 3rd person action games going forward AFAIC.

Oh god go away.

Who the hell do you xbox trolls think you are fooling with those pathetic efforts to hype your console and its games. Let me guess, Uncharted is just a Geometry Wars clone too?

;)

Learn to read buddy:

Uncharted looks like it will have me picking up a PS3 this fall, looks awesome. Especially the story which looks very well put together. And Fallout-esque setting is a total blast from the past!

The 'strengths' you just listed were also a huge weakness. One button did all those things and not when you wanted. How many times did you jump from side to side of a door when you were trying to sprint or roll? The trigger system in RS:V was much better IMO, but both are good games.

Why we are talking about this with respect to Drake's is beyond me. The camera is much further out and we have no idea what buttons do what, so how does it compare other than having a cover system which just about every 3rd person game has had since Kill.Switch, GRAW, etc? Now if the 'X' button does everything in Drake's then you might be onto something...

I never said the controls were that great did I? I would've liked some more buttons used as well. It's the functions that are great.

On to what? All I'm saying is it would be natural, and expected, for this game to borrow some elements from the great implementation in gears.

It's pretty amusing to watch all the ultra-sensitive Sony hardcore's rally together though
