Sony: PlayStation 3 price drop

When I bought it I thought the PS3 was worth the 599 euros it cost me, and looking at how central it is in our livingroom and how much playtime it has gotten, I'm more than happy.
I've got a free game (bart smit in Belgium) so the PS3 has cost me about 530€ :D (They sell all their games for 69.99€)

So the pricecut doesn't bother me that much.

I think I found a more detailed list:

fragFX for PlayStation 3 (mouse) - 41647%
PlayStation 3 (60GB) - 2700%
Blu-Ray- remote control - 1150%
MLB 07: The Show - 545%
F.E.A.R. - 405%
Sixaxis-controller - 400%
Resistance: Fall of Man - 372%
PS3 HDMI-cable - 362%
Formula 1 Championship Edition -355%
PS3 Component-AV-cable - 235%
Memory Card-adaptor - 227%
Virtua Fighter 5 - 205%
PS3 Intercooler - 195%
Ridge Racer 7 - 195%

Joystiq is reporting that these % increases are not in sales but increases in sales rank. *shrug*

Hmm... I saw Amazon listed PS3 as "2800% increase" from #26 to #1 though. Initially it was #26 to #3 but I forgot the percentage increase (Something like 1700% I think, but I am not sure anymore). Anyway, it's selling well now. Sony must be refreshing the page every minute now. :D

"The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip," said SCEA's Kimberly Otzman. "The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model."

Looks to me like they are going to phase out the 60GB as soon as they sell out this X-mas, then the 80GB will be the standard $499 SKU without Motorstorm most likely. If they can do a smooth transition, it is a smart cost cutting move. Now they need a new 40GB SKU based the same cost cutting at $399 this Sept/Oct.

Indeed.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/movers-and-shakers/videogames/ref=pd_ts_mte/103-2551618-1359838#learnmore

The Movers & Shakers index identifies, by category, the biggest gainers in sales rank at Amazon.com in the past 24 hours. For example, suppose a music item has a sales rank of 10 today, but was ranked as low as 30 yesterday. Its Movers & Shakers increase would be 200 percent.

The formula used is (previous ranking position - actual one) / actual position. So (28 - 1) / 1 = 27 --> 2700 % increase in rank

No, I think they'll be selling only the bundle for a while atleast. It's ok(ish) value for the customer and cheap for Sony to throw those extras in.

Yeah I have heard that a price-cut is due in October, to coincide with the launch of Home.

I'd prefer this bundle if you could choose any of Sony's first-party games while the promotion lasts.

Some shops are already selling it at 499€ now apparently, so I think it'll be ok.

No shop is selling it at 499 €. There is no price drop in Europe as such, but they'll sell a bundle with an extra sixaxis, Resistance and Motorstorm for 599€.

PS3 price cut confirmed temporary to clear out 60GB stock;

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704
Reeves was speaking at an E3 event to announce the introduction of a new PS3 bundle in Europe. When asked about possible criticisms over whether SCEE should have given consumers the option to pay a lower price, as SCEA has done, he replied, "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, "In America, yes."

So the 60GB Sku in the US at $499 is temporary and will be replaced with the $599 80GB sku? Interesting!

I assume in October they'll have another price cut on the 80GB sku since MS will likely cut their price also.

If Halo3 reviews well all around and the 360 gets a price cut, Sony will have a lot of work to do this winter to remain competitive in the US and Europe. If Halo3 doesn't do well and MS holds their price, I could see the PS3 taking a good lead in the holidays.

Someone should remind him that if the world has "moved on" they should stop working on MGS4, GOWIII, GT5, oh and FF13! :)

Europe gets a PS3 starter pack at a price of 600 euro's

Sony has stated many times that the PS3 may not receive a price cut in Europe but will provide more of a value proposition. Well we have received news that they are going down the road of adding value by releasing the 'PS3 starter pack' for 600 euro's which comes complete with a 60GB PS3, Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm as well as two SIXAXIS controllers.

Source: http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=18877

Motorstorm - 60€
Resistance - 60€
PS3 controller - 55€

Total: 175€

600€ - 175€ = 425€, which isn't much for the PS3.

The only downside is that I wouldn't buy Resistance separately, because it doesn't support keyboard & mouse. But for a bargain like this, I think it's about time for me to buy the damn console. :)

Edit: Just noticed something odd; because of Resistance the starter pack has an age limit of 18. :D
