SDTV owners and next-gen systems - beware?

Think of the best CG you have ever seen in your 480i TV set.
Think of FF:TSW in your 480i TV
Was it bad ???

Just give the pixels the right treatment, and the job is done. NO NEED TO HDTV TO ANCHIEVE PHOTO-LIKE GAMES.

And I'll not tell you the VHS resolution, you'd faint... (ok, 240i... and it still looks fantastic... think of Toy Story 2 in VHS at 240i.... so pleeeease, 480p is really enough... 720p, 1080i and 1080p are just marketing, WHEN comparing displays of the same size. I thing 480p is enough for a 29" screen. 42"should get 720p and 60" 1080i or p

Stay 7 feet away from a 29" TV, playing at 480p and then at 720p. There would be NO DIFERENCE AT ALL. If you get closer, like 3 feet, you start seeing the res diference.

When it comes to images/TVs/etc... its a case of bigger is better (with all things equal that is, eg quality). I am not talking about trade-offs between higher resolution and effects, but if there is no trade-offs, as it's within the console's ability, then I'll want the highest resolution possible.

Why? Details & definitions. Sitting close or far is a matter of personal choice, but if I was an X360 owner who was sold on the true 720p for all games with a HDTV, I won't be a happy camper.

This whole issue does start to make me wonder if the X360 is truly capable of the level of details (effects & what not) at 720p with decent framerates. This is not just a question of the GPU, but as a console package.

Well we hooked up the kiosk to my 15 inch lcd tv monitor (its only a tv not a pc monitor) it does 480p

The games look great on it well at least kameo , pgr3 and madden (the only ones we had at the time bought and open) Not as good as hdtv but still blows away anything on the xbox or ps2 .

Anyway as a side note anyone hear anything new about price drops for hdtvs ?

Some SD screen captures from Kameo.

As you can see, the GFX fidelity is around that of Rare's last Xbox game Conker: Live & Reloaded.

What the heck happened to the volumetric shadows on all the npc cars in the pic above?^^^ I'm getting tired of all the inconsistent shadowing that's beeen going on for the 360 (PDZ, Call of Duty, Kameo). How hard is it to make a decent shadow LOD system under which shadow calculations for all objects are uniform, with the LOD computed based on the degree of visibility from the gamer's POV. Even Kameo has a clearly visible shadow boundaries that extends only a small distance away from the playable character; shadows dissappear after characters walk a few feet away. Don't tell me PGR 3 does the same.

Edit: I guess those shots above are from PGR2, but I'm still concerned about shadow LOD and consistency in games where large expanses are visible.

psst that's a PGR2 shot

those are some fugly shots and no where on the page does it say they were taken at 480i .

So i really don't see why your posting them . Unless your goal is to post ugly ass shots from a non final build ? (its a french site and the game doesn't come out till december there)

This is a thread about games in standard definition looking average on a SDTV, that's why I posted them to bring a visual represtation to the table, if you don't believe they're taken at 480i, fine - it's not my problem. Also, why does the international orgin of said site come into play? If its French automatically discredit them? I don't understand, but If you still have these concerns take it up with StephaneC at Gaming-Age, if you have an account as he works on the website.

Wow, a considerable amount of detail is lost when at 480i? I'm participating in the thread at GAF that has these pictures in a thread (GAF hilarity ensues) but i've stated there and i'll state here, wait till another source can confirm that this is what PGR3 looks at this resolution.

If it is, I feel bad for people with standard televisions. On the bright side, Kameo looks relativley fine at 480i/p.

It says it no where on the page u linked to .

So where does SephaneC at gaf get the info from ?

Btw i wouldn't touch gaf with a ten foot pole thier trollish behavior is on par with phil

This is a game you have to see in motion, without it the car looks like t doesn't belong in the enviroment. The in car shots look really good though even at SD.

You just jump at the chance to believe anything anti XBOX eh? It's pretty funny to watch.
Its pretty funny to watch people jump at the defense of anything bad against MS too. ;)

why because they are resized ? IIf i took a 720p shot and resized it to 1080p would u believe me that the xbox 360 can display that ?

Even if the shot was a resize of a 1280x720 image down scaled to a 640x480 image, the difference wouldn't be any where as bad as going from 1280x720 to 1920x1080.

So I fail to see how your arguing with 1280x720 upscaled to 1920x1080, since people can argue that Xbox 360 can do 1920x1080 because the scaler chip will just do the work.

The point is if these were sd shots of the game they would be labeled as such.

Yet they state no where that they are sd shots .

So where is the proof that they are ?

How do i know they aren't simply resized pictures . Esp when eyeballing them they seem to have higher fsaa lvls than that of the 720p pictures which def seems to be from resizing them

I'm pretty sure a website showing sd pictures would label them as such .
