Wow! I'm really impressed with how well the PS2 version stacks up! And even surpasses the GC version in some ways(deeper colors, sharper image). Good job Capcom ;)

Are you being sarcastic? :???:

Yeah..That was made by me. Those two images of the low poly villagers arms were screenshots taken from that video and blown up bys some guy lol.

Id appreciate it if you didnt direct link to the file, since our bandwidth bills are already going through the roof since the video started getting used as ****** fodder.

I use mediaplayer classic (Quicktime alternative).
You need a very powerful CPU. My system (almost 2 years old) couldn't handle it. I set it on pause and skipped through the frames to make the screenshots.

Btw:
Here is a (186mb) demowalkthrough of the PS2-version:

It was very obvious the shading advantage of GC. Looks much better to me. With the different resolution and clarity of images though it's hard to see other difference like AA and poly counts and texture res. Like LB I thought those two big shots that near looked identical were PS2 and GC shots, but as they're both PS2 shots there aren't yet clearly comparable images to compare hands, jaggies, colours etc.

Sorry. I would edit my post, if that was possible.

Thanks for the video btw.

Hmm.. I installed quicktime alternative (but left quicktime installed too), ran it with mediaplayer classic and it's the same, only upper part of the video working, rest is white

Kaotik its using Divx

http://www.divx.com
Download it and play it using the Divx Player :p

EDIT: Woops, you werent talking about THIA's one. Im not sure what this other guy used but its most likely either Divx or Xvid if its an AVI.

I'm sorry again. :p
When I read your impressions and you wondered why there is such a difference between ingame and cutscenes many people already knew it's all video (good quality, so it's hard to notice) of the Cubecutscenes. As I wrote in my first post, almost 3 Gigs of Videofiles are stored on the PS2-DVD. The nice person (don't remember his username) who uploaded the lava-room-video checked the full Version.

.

Check the ruliweb shots as it clearly shows better textures and more trees (more polys).

In case anyone is interested, some other noticeable differences are:

Material shading and texture highlights missing:

Bump-mapping and complex refraction effects missing:

And here is a video showing the PS2's version of the "Water temple room": http://www.gamesmediamirror.com/leech_1728_en.html

This room had some of the most impressive Tev shaded water in the GC version, but it is now using much more basic reflection effects.

But yes it is still an exellent port, but the fact remains that the PS2 just can't match the gamecube in many areas.

 Man that lava level is night and day! Thanks Tab23.
all the framebuffer effetcts from the GC version (that includes the lava heat shimmering etc) should be matched, if not surpassed on the ps2
:?:

well, theoretically at least.

but if we're to try and speculate a bit, i'd say that:

1st, they might not have had the time for most of the GC special effects (any framebuffer post-effects and render targets -based) which would have had to be redone more or less from scratch on the ps2 or at least would have required major quirks in the rendition pipeline. keep in mind the port was done on a short note plus they actually added extra content. damn, they had tough/scarce time meeting the basics of the engine performance (i.e. texture, geometric & lighting complexity) so what remains about the extra bells and whistles?

and 2nd, if you pay attention, actually a significant part of the look of the laval level is already lost by the clearly sub-par illumination in the ps2 version in comparison to the original, special effects aside. IOW, if they had actually implemented the lava haze, it still would not have looked the same.

Yea. And that's why it gets on my nerves when people say ps2 can't ever achieve those kind of graphics. But then again i'm not surprised, camcom has a hard time with ps2 and it's amazing what did so far.

I uploaded the two lavaroom videos. I would give the guys who captured them some credit, but I couldn't find the old threads...

Btw:
Am I the only one who thinks the fire-effects in RE4 are the best ever seen in a game?
The environments, characters, smoke-, water- and fog-effects are great, but a few other games or techdemos I've seen can do equal or better.
But I have yet to see a game or techdemo with equally impressive flames/fire. (Can anyone think of one? Opinions? Any next gen-vids with fire?) I saw a video of the unreal3-engine a while ago, and the fire (a torch iirc) didn't even come close. And neither did the fire in HL2, Doom3, Far Cry, Riddick, Fear-Demo.

Start up the game.
Load chapter 2.
Watch the individual flames. Try to see a pattern of how they appear. It's impossible. It must be randomnized or something similar. It's so lifelike. And all the different kinds of fire they programmed: Candles, a variety of torches and of course even lava. Zoom in on the splashing lava on the wall. It's scary.
This is an attempt to give credit to the programmers.
(excuse my english. It's a little rusty...)

i can only second that. i think re4 was if not the technically apogee of this generation then among the top tiers.
