PS3 sales

So all those people who spent $thousand+ on an HDTV don't want to watch HD movies enough to buy a $500 player?

I think it's quite the opposite. Anyone with an HDTV wants HD content. They want HD TV programmes (and pay extra for them), HD games (and buy rather costly new consoles for this) and HD movies in particular, seeing the whole name for this market segment is 'Home Cinema'.

Anyonw who buys an HDTV at their current prices to watch HD movies, and yet won't buy an HD player until their $200, is quite frankly an imbecile! If they don't want to buy an HD player now, why didn't they wait to get an HDTV until the players are $200 and the TVs are much cheaper also? And what proportion of current HDTV buyers don't care for movies?

agreed!

LB excepted of course ;)

You would be VERY surprised. I think the vast majority of people who bought LCD TVs (which just happened to be HD) in the last year or so in the UK...
You're probably right, but is that the majority of HDTVs out there? I'm thinking, maybe wrongly, that most HDTVs were bought by people who knew something about it. A year or so ago, pretty much the only flat-panel TVs available became HDTVs so there'd be a wider non-savvy market. But HDTVs have been around for a lot longer than that, and the userbase is made up of these earlier sets. Are these the majority or minority? Are not most HDTV owners the sort who subscribe to Sky HD channels in the States etc. who want to see HD movies on their HDTVs that they spent a good deal of money on? It'd be a damning indictment of the high-tech early adopter market if they've got no idea what they're buying and don't care to use it properly!

I can tell you for sure that if you look at how many people have SKY HD in the UK, they are the vast minority of people with HD-Ready flatscreens in their homes. People with HDDVD or Bluray players in the UK are an even tinier minority.

PS3 will definitely change things in the UK, but still, if people are convinced that their DVD player attached to their HDTV is giving them "HD", then it will take a while to convince them otherwise.

I'd hardly call the UK the epicentre of worldwide HDTV adoption though ;). Doesn't the UK account for all of 10% of HDTVs (totally made up figure)? What about the US where lots of the HDTVs hang out? Are they also owned by people who have no interest in seeing HD movies, at least until players are cheap?

From my first post, i did make it clear that i was talking about the UK, as i was replying to a post about the UK... o_O

Don't underestimate the ability of an quality HDTV to make your friends and neighbors who don't have one yet green with envy.

When non HDTV owners see a good HDTV playing really quality HD content like from a 360 or PS3 game or (HD/BR) disc they get excited and jealous. And usually immediately start scheming on how to get their own. I've personally seen this happen several times.

Of course at first the TVs are going to be adopted by geeks and enthusiasts. But as it penetrates more homes, the need to own a HDTV will spread like a virus infecting the consciousness of the general population.

Just in the last year or so since the release of the 360 and HD-DVD and BR formats the selection and content for HDTVs has vastly improved. And at the same time TVs got even better and cheaper too. I say we are on the brink of a golden age of the HD era if it has not already started yet.

Yes, and this is how I expect the desire for HD movie features to develop. Or do you think that people see an HDTV in HD action, buy one, and then wince at the price of HD players and decide not to get one until they drop in price?

tongue's point was that the no-one's interested in getting a $500-600 BRD player, whereas, as I understand it (and what I was talking about, rather than just the UK market that LB was talking about o_O), a large portion of HDTV owners are interested in getting an HD player and aren't too likely to whince at the current price-point as the existing HDTV owners already spent a shed-load of dollars on these earlier sets. If they're that price sensitive, why have they got HDTVs? Of course there's also HDTV owners who don't much care for HD content, but are they the minority or majority? Is tongue right that noone wants to spen the current prices on HD players?

I guess that would make the the minority because at the moment I do not care for HD content.
Now if the price were to go down then I would become more interested in it but at the moment it is too high for me to be able to justify purchasing it.

This is starting to get pathetic. One store may present some PS3' s for a day or two and some people will exploit the chance to spread it as if it happened everyone and the PS3 doesnt sell. A couple of days in store doesnt mean its not selling fast. It doesnt have to be sold once it gets on the shelves

Demand is being met, it's just a matter of whether that's from high shipping numbers or lower than expected demand. It's been available at bestbuy.com for the last couple of days, and also amazon.com. This site shows it's available in multiple web retailers now.

The situation is more than just some guy with an agenda taking a picture, the PS3 is sitting on shelves in Japan while the Wii is selling out. Couple that with the recent Japan weekly chart of Wii selling more than 3 times the number of PS3, that's news worthy.

Surely that price doesnt help it sell as fast as Wii and as fast as it could have if it was cheaper. But still people have the impression this means the PS3 doesnt sell. Wii's may be selling out from the day they get in the stores but having a few PS3's in stores for some days does not necessarilly mean its doing bad, just because Wii is selling faster. Actually taking into consideration the price tag, it's doing well atleast of now.

I was refering to the original ABC headline, which got changed (Thank God ! Otherwise the mainstream media reads like a ******'s blog site).

First, no one is saying that PS3 has totally sold out in all retails. It has sold out in some, but not in others. Read the relevant GAF threads if you're interested.

Also, if you look at your links carefully, many of them are bundles. Even the Amazon one (in this case) are really reselling PS3s at around US$775.00.

As I mentioned in previous posts, an industry guy will need some more data before concluding anything. Even if there are left over units, it could mean issues or non-issues in various areas such as longer shelf-life, mis-allocation, just-arrived shipments, sufficient supply or over-priced.

Nonetheless, I agree that the topic is newsworthy (That's why the media jumped at it). Usually a company's PR guy will take this opportunity to plug their products (i.e., There is no bad publicity if you capitalize on it). Sony has chosen to remain silent. Not sure why but it's their decision (Perhaps stock piling for Europe at this moment).

We will see the real reasons in time to come. These are stuff worthy of marketing case studies. Be patient. We don't want to teach the wrong things.

I would say if the PS3 is in stock and the numbers come back the Wii sold more it would be a disaster for sony. Who would of thought after e3 2005 sony could be looking at 3rd place in NA come the end of 2007? The market I would classify as trendy if nintendo manages to keep up the momentum for a few more months it could really put a major hurt on sony. If the Wii continues to be the IN product sony will be in major trouble. First they will have to over come price but secondly they will have the over come not being the cool in style thing. It is almost like a repeat of the DS vs PSP the DS ended up being the new cool in style thing with gamers add in the price advantage and you get a DS completely dominating. If sony loses major market share they only have themselves to blame. They got greedy and tried to use gamers to win some stupid movie format war. The number that come out in febuary will be very very telling if ninendo is out shipping sony and the Wii is still selling out instantly we may well be on our way to a new industry leader or at worst a split with no dominate platform.

I still say a 299 399 PS3 with a DVD drive completely mops the floor with MS and ninendo.
