PS3 sales

Hmm, if that TV report is true, then most of Japan's sales have been exported out to Asia?

So there would be huge pent-up demand once supplies improve.

How are sales of 1080p panels like Bravias over there?

Actually, I wouldn't put too much faith in it. Similar stories have been reported in some Japanese newspapers. It just the latest point of interest for media sensationalism. So the numbers are probably greatly exaggerated (1200 of 1500 @ yodobashi, etc.).

Sounds like a little xenophobic nationalistic baiting, actually. Get people outraged that they can't find a PS3 to buy because those damn [fill in the blank] have gotten them all. Next [fill in the blank] will get all the good looking women too, just you watch!

But this is a known thing that happened on launch day.

But we are still talking about VERY few consoles that is being "exported" like that. I mean they mention 50 consoles a day they get like that that would make like 350 consoles a week and sony should be able to produce around 40 to 80 thousand consols a week, so these numbers are not even rounding errors, and if you have to pay more than four times the salalry in Tailand to get one I am sure the demand is very restricted there...

1 month has already passed since the launch. Besides they may not be the only group exporting the PS3. The point is it's very difficult to find a PS3 in Tokyo today, but not so in provincial areas in Japan. Of course you can buy it on web auctions if you want with some extra fee.

Looking at the NPD numbers I don't think that Laa-Yosh was too wrong, I mean we are talking about a $299-$399 versous a $129 console with a muriad of cheap games...
Then a $499-599 console needs another criteria ;)

One thing alarming about the PS3 is the ebay factor. The ebay market has essentially crashed for the PS3. I've seen the 20GB model go for less or as much as retail + tax.

The 65GB down in the high 6, low 7's. With supply still very limited and quantities low, I expected the price to float higher than this until atleast after Christmas, which is still 3 weeks away. This, to me, is a bit alarming. I'm wondering if the mass market simply cannot bear the price tag as is, much less pay an extra premium.

I wouldn't be too shocked if you can walk in and buy a PS3 in January. 20GB models can be found locally without much hassle as is.

No doubt it is difficult to get the PS3 in Japan, but I still doubt that it is due to some "massive" export under the table of some kind

I guess we could debate Laa-Yosh´s "almost as well" and whithin what percentage you can claim that something sells almost as well. It seems that the 360 is selling within around 80% of the PS2 that I think sounds like almost as well. Compared to the handheld market where you have the more expensive PSP selling at the range of around 40% of NDS and under 30% if you factor in the GBA...

Obviously, if the PS3 starts to gater dust on the shelves starting with January, it's not good for Sony. Although I doubt this will happen, if only due to shortages.

Maybe we will see a pricecut sooner than expected - like 400/500 USD. Will MS respond by cutting also 100 USD, to get to 200/300 USD? This will be an "ugly" picture - 360 cheaper than Wii.

You could also go to play-asia who are always stocked with wiis, 60s and 20s but there is a price premium. However relatively speaking the wii is much more expansive (nearly selling for twice its retail price...)

I too have been surprised at some of the Ebay prices. I think it is multifold. First is there are other options this year. Last year, you either got a 360 or nothing. This year, if you cannot get a PS3 you can try your luck with a Wii or go with an Xbox 360 and a back library of games. And that is the next point: Games. The PS3 is going to have killer games, just not many this year. If it launched last year it would have been a no brainer, but why pay more now for arguably less this year?

I think whoever launches first next time (doesn't matter who) will face the same situation: Extreme ebay sales, whereas those who follow will see lower peaks. I think this is more of a condition of next gen already starting than anything MS, Sony, or Nintendo have done in regards to their individual products outside of when they were released of course.

No he was comparing the $299 HDDless 360 to the PS2 sales. That is what's wrong about his statement.

I would agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that the Wii is still getting it's premium on ebay. There are also a LOT more Wii's out there so you'd think it'd be quite the opposite. Funny enough, the best deal for a PS3 is on ebay right now. Any small premium you pay is easily offset by your time and resources (gas, wear and tear) spent driving around searching for one.

Just the last ended auctions of the Wii I pulled up. $550, $510, $530. You can get a 20GB PS3 model off ebay $550. I think this is quite telling. Once supply gets better, watching the PS3 sales figures should be very interesting to say the least.

I see these posts about PS3s available everywhere, and I think that I can finally pick one up. But there ain't jack ANYWHERE!!! What the hell do people do? ... waste their frickin' lives calling up every electronics store in morning to get a PS3 count so that they can slam Sony in the evening? There may be supplies when the door opens, but I can assure u that if u wait until the afternoon, they're ALL gone. I'm still holding out hope that I can pick one up for Christmas, but I aint camping out for the doors to open.
