I dunno, to me it's turned into second nature, having to deal with it in my everyday work. Unless it's as stylized as something like Okami, the rules make sense and apply to pretty much everything.

But I do realize that I'm the exception here and the game's graphics should not be judged against such criteria - I've merely tried to explain my previous point, as I've been questioned and so.
And note that I haven't said anything about the speed, or - particularly - gameplay.

Ha ha, I think the problem is: it's hard to be convinced by a static, empty room picture. An in-game video showcasing the sense of scale may impress more.

That looks nice however with such small images most games comes out impressive especially if source is already super sized. Previous pages had links to proper res 1280x720 promo/ingame shots (though source was 1920x1080 promo or?).

Ain't that a fact, some games like "killzone 2" would look 100 times better in motion than in stills. I remember the days when people scrutinize kz2's screenshot down to bits and when shown in motion with all the effects kicked in, it became the best looking console game all of a sudden. I believe we'll be seeing an even bigger effect of that "still vs motion" syndrome with GOW3 since the scale and tech mechanics behind it are so much more.

Obviously, art style is highly subjective. If you cannot argue without ad hominems, then drop it. Agree to disagree and move on.

Oh, and the comparisons end NOW. They're almost always bad for discussion here.

I think it's just miscommunication. Laa-Yosh is talking about art style, but the rest are talking about the overall graphics achievement (style + tech).

Well I've played the demos of Bayonetta, Dante, and GOW3. Bayonetta's combat was fine, but I'm simply not into games where they mix modern day with mythical stuff, maybe except some Final Fantasy games, even those are a hard swallow though, so I wasn't into it too much. Ninja Blade was the worst offender that I've ever played, and so was DMC4, both of which I didn't even bother to finish the demos. The combat seemed fine. The graphics were fine except the crazy aliasing in the PS3 version I played.

Dante should really be called Dante of War, it copied a lot of GOW stuff, which is not really a bad thing. Also the graphics were fine, so was the gameplay, although the story didn't make much sense.

Last I played the E3 demo of God of War. Except the lighting which was brilliant, I found the graphics less than spectacular, and clearly not the same level as KZ2 and U2. However, the presentation was outstanding, it wasn't a simple combat mechanics game, it had that X factor in it, that it was more than just pressing buttons at the right time, came closer to a movie-like experience, like Uncharted 2. That was the biggest factor for me. It has that polish, and I don't mean graphics by it, it's just the overall atmosphere, the feeling it gave me. I also liked Call Of Duty and its production values for most games in the series, which compelled me to finish them.

It was the real deal, not a bland tasting copy like the other games. It's also because Kratos is way cooler than the other protagonists, I really enjoy controlling a psychopathic godlike warrior compared to a slutty librarian with guns in her shoes or some guy who's supposed to be into biblical powers but I don't know much else about. I guess for me, the protagonist really is very important, for that reason I enjoyed wolverine immensely and more than Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 or Heavenly Sword, although most of the hardcore hack and slah guys would disagree. As far as protagonists go, you can't get much cooler than Kratos, I like him even more than Drake sometimes.

It's like movies, where people say Hollywood has messed up the original, which I call BS. Guess what, 99% of the time when I watch the original, I prefer the Hollywood versions, such as The Ring and Vanilla Sky because of its presentation and production values. Yes, I usually enjoy Michael Bay movies as well. I also enjoyed Avatar more than Pocahontas or Dances With Wolves, due to better presentation and technical achievement, although they had the same story.

Long post, but to sum up, I don't think GOW3 pushes PS3 graphics to the same degree as UC2 or KZ2, but it still looks good, and its presentation and production values are up there with the best of this generation so far, which is UC2.

I disagree... I think even the E3 demo nearly matches U2 and definitely matches KZ2 graphically. The detail and quality on the character models is especially impressive. Use of DoF is well done, lighting is good, and the game is very clean looking (minimal aliasing). Although both GoW and KZ2 are dark and gritty, GoW is sharper and has better art direction (IMHO) due to better use of colors.

And when you count in the titan gameplay everything suddenly becomes ten folds more impressive. It boggles mind how did SSM managed to pull that off while maintaining most of the minute details, the mathematics algorithms must be precise as hell in their engine.

Wow, this is like a "Honey I Shrunk the Kid" game. ^_^
I want to see a video. I think it will speak louder than everything else.

What I really miss in GOW combat is some kind of close compat, where he uses his blades near his body, without the chains telescoping out.

To some extend they have implemented this in the demo: if you push [ ], and keep it pushed the second time, Kratos starts a really ultra cool close combat combo with his knifes: some of the most satisfactory things I played till now!

I agree with you about the demo..... I just played it again earlier tonight, after a 2 week break...

it just looks amazing...and I'm very picky about graphics..... sometimes I just walk very slow in the beginning part of the demo....and pay attention to the right side of the screen....there is just something about the rocks (as you go around the corner). I can't explain it, but I don't think I have ever seen anything like it. It might just be the great art work combined with the DOF effect and the camera placement...but it just pops out. It is art, it's not suppose to be photo realistic, but damnit it looks real.

I'll try to take a pic tomorrow.

I too think there is something special about those rocks but my eyes on the contrary don't see them to be photorealistic ,instead I think they look like hand drawn art with very good brush strokes. [See how much difference an opinion makes ? :) ]

yeah, its 5am here in California....so its hard for me to explain. I didn't really mean that it looked photo realistic (like a texture map of a real rock).....what I meant was it looks real, it feels like it is right there on my TV screen, like it is just placed there.....arh what has Sony Santa Monica done to me , I can't explain it.
