Some edges have visible aliasing (looks like 2xMSAA to me) while others look really clean. Maybe it's because of the good use of DoF or post processing. If I had to take a guess, I'd say they're direct feed.

Someone should post these in the image quality thread.

I knew this was not direct feed (and not 2x MSAA either) but wanted to confirm this with Alstrong before i posted (and my an ass of myself). My thoughts where confirmed, this is a supersampled bullshot\promoshot.

Here is another shot from the same build that is clean 720p 0x msaa

GoW Direct feed 720p 0xMSAA

That's actually the shot I was looking at. I just assumed all of them were from the same source, but apparently some are direct feed and some aren't. I thought there was AA but I guess not.

Wasn't the E3 demo confirmed to be 720p 2xmsaa? We had tons of direct feed shots awhile ago for the study and why would the final game be any different?

Why is so much attention paid to image quality when the characters don't have reflections? So many things need to be cut just to get a game to run at 60fps.

Well first of all it is a very old screenshot, since then we have seen tons of improvements already from the Making of Chimera video. GOW II also has character reflections so I don't see why they'll cut it in GOW3. The reflective nature of that ground texture is also questionable as I highly suspect the black stuffs are just shadows with a greyish paint. Otherwise it's hard to tell what's going on there.

Are we really going to have this conversation again are we?

Whatever you want to call it its not exactly how the game will look. Doesnt mean you cant drool over them just means you have to adjust your expectations for the final game accordingly, which is easier said than done for many. We have seen direct feed shots and have had a demo, so in this case its somewhat easier than for games where you only have bullshots as a point of reference.

If the only difference is that it's supersampled, then it's a supersampled shot, not a bullshot :)

And isn't that pretty much the definition of a bullshot?

GoW 3 will look nowhere near the level of the supersampled shot, it has way better alpha textures, much better aliasing, better mipmap level, better LOD.

Is that what is going on? I'd have thought just the AA was ramped up, but that's completely different.

Well regardless of whether those things are effected directly improving IQ has an effect on the way everything looks. For example texture res could stay the same internally but took different depending on the final image quality.

How does downsampling affect LOD, mip maps and alpha textures?

Super sampling will probably give you highres post process effects, texture detail that just looks much better like more detail per cubic inch or such etc. For example in GTAIV I can use ENB series mod to super sample. Some instant differences are obviously the polygon edges, smooth transparencies, no shimmer effect on mapping, much higher DOF quality, greatly improved texture fidelity aswell as better looking effects and more. In GTAIV the difference is as big as looking at a low quality DVD movie vs quality Blu-ray movie, I kid you not LB.
