You're certainly alone with this statement. Though it's certainly flattering to the mediocre looking NG games this hardware gen (strictly speaking of texture res/quality)
Maybe your eye's are low res. Surfaces look fine and comparable to a lot of Next Generation title, Ninja Gaiden not being one of them.

Look at the scenery textures. They're pretty low res.

But a bit grittier.
Yep.

Are you for real? :???:
The synthesis of the colors and the angle is exactly what you expect from a good painting indeed.

A quick glance does fool you into thinking it is some kind of art. After some careful look will reveal you the polygon edges and "pixelation" that will make you suspect its real time gameplay. Otherwise yes I can understand where he is coming from, because you rarely expect such kind of synthesis during the unpredictable camera angle, postures and lighting from the gameplay. Everything blends in that imagery very well

it looks like theyre mixing roman with greek mythology (which is a wankish geeky observation)

What makes you believe that btw? The Romans adopted the Greek philosophies and Gods after they conquered them.

Yep.

So what you're saying is you'd rather pretend that people are being OTT and say the surface textures are "low res" instead of simply fessing up and admitting that it is very similar to "concept art"...right?

Because the fact that the textures in this game are on par or better with pretty much every single next gen release with the exception of a few (a very small few) titles seems to suggest other things about your opinions.

I don't think anyone here is saying that it looks like a painting in the literal sense. What they're saying, at least from what I can gather, is that the colors and lighting look very very good and lend to the suggestion that the art style is deliberately going after a "painted" look.

Edit: Not to mention no one is even talking about those screens with the "painting" comments. Kind of seems to be counter productive to the discussion related to THAT particular screen (Hades) and then post up OTHER screens and say THOSE are "low res" don't you think?

I can, because it doesn't. It's just a dark screenshot.

Also, surfaces seem to be pretty low res. Reminds me of Ninja Gaiden.
The game generally has very high res textures pretty much everywhere if you've ever played the E3 demo on a HDTV. I'm looking at NG right now and it's a world of difference but let's not go there. I can tell some of those burning souls appeared to be not as sharp mainly due to the animated nature as the picture must been taken during motion. The first time when I saw that shot from the magazine I literally thought it was a concept art due to the use of lighting, strong contrast and the oily tone.

Indeed it's a great screenshot. Very nice composition.

I posted those pictures there and everybody can see those low-res, diffuse-only surfaces. If you have evidence to the contrary simply post it.

Well, I'm discussing those recently released screenshots, but like I said, evidence is better than a wall of text :)

Thanks Nesh!
(That is what exactly happend...)

Just wanted to say the new screens are really God Of War now :D !
No complaints anymore. Somebody's hard at work and it is showing now :) !
They are magnificent aren't they, but I'll wait till tomorrow for some truly EPIC media "from the latest build and possibly Poseidon" as promised by Jeff Rubernstein. What we have now are nothing but appetizers .

It's supposed to be only screens and previews though, no trailer.

There is a very thoroughly conducted interview from http://www.ng4a.com/?p=32026 and thanks to a member from the official GOW3 forum Alithesnake who has made the following translation of the conversation.

Lot's of interesting tidbits, especially the idea of a new playable character from the series as well as how GG and ND have helped SSM for crafting the most tech bound Sony title to date:).

Thanks a lot!

This quote is interesting:

Q15: Is this the end of the GOD OF WAR series after GOW3?

This is the conclusion of the revenge of kratos, but not the series. Depending on the fan demand, we will maybe continue the series, but with a different characters (like a spinoff).

but what the ... means this

Q33. Is the game 60 frames per second.

Yes, the core game is. However, some weapons are locked at 30 while others on 60 to ensure maximum enjoyment and maximum polish.

Yeah, it sounds strange to adjust the framerate based on the wielded weapon.

I don't like GoW3's look because Krato is too ugly (Hate his face !). But I think the game is very good at throwing incredible scenarios at the players. One moment you're swarmed with monsters, then you leap into the air and rocket vertically up a twisted tunnel like Luke Skywalker's Death Star run. When you clear the tunnel and burst into the open space, you find yourself leaping into the face of a flaming Titan, etc.

My 360 friend seems to like the GoW3 look. At least, he'd comment "Great <insert visual features>" here and there; whereas in U2, he'd try to pick the game visually apart. ^_^

Both of us are looking forward to the game. Most likely I'll let him play the game while I watch. My work schedule is getting tight.

EDIT:
Also, low/high res textures may be orthogonal to whether a game looks like a painting come to life.

I'm going to bet he meant or even said (could be a transcription error) sections rather than weapons. These two words are similar enough to mistake them in your mind.

Yeah, GoW is one of the few games that appeal to both groups... those who like great games and those who like big guys and animated manboobs.

The weird thing about God of War, for me, was I'm a big fan of the earlier games even though I absolutely hate the main character. I don't like the design or aesthetic at all. The bare chest, the tribal tattoos, the voice, the cheesiness, the eyebrows, the facial hair. I actually hope the next game has a new hero. The thing is, the game is just fun to play. The new one has maybe crossed that "violence" boundary for me, but I'm still pretty sure i'll end up getting it. As an action button-mash type game, and as a cinematic game in general, it should really be top notch. I'm trying not to watch too many spoilers, but I'm a little disappointed that it looks like not much has changed since the last one, other than the graphics. At the same time, the formula works, so they're obviously not about to change it.
