PS3 Firmware 3.0

I am just hoping together with any controller fix, they remove the grey background for the friends list, fix the forever ticker, and the vanishing XMB item labels. I have gotten used to the larger font now. I think people are annoyed because it's like someone smeared over our elegant XMB.

What I can't figure out about the ticker is that the old ugly-ass ticker would at least give you a list of news topics to click on, if you so chose. Here you can't even do that.

Ever since I've understood how the game Flow works, I've always wanted that as a XMB background. At long last, that is a possibility. I want a full blown Flower:!: background even more, but doubt that's feasible technically.

BTW, I haven't encountered any problem with the new firmware so far. I have a white PS3 CECHL model with white DS3 controllers if that matters.

It makes no sense to me that the text descriptions for non-selected items now fade out after a couple seconds of hovering an entry. Is it prettier this way? To me it's just a reduction in usability. Don't see the point at all.

Non-current text descriptors don't display at all for items categorized in folders btw. So weird.

And I still think the background blur is overdone. I like my wallpaper. That's why I picked it as my wallpaper. Seeing it maimed like this does not increase my happiness levels.

The highlighting mechanisms of the basic XMB (size increase and big margin for active item) were fine all along.

Not sure if this is 3.0 issue or if it has been a problem all along but this is the first time this has affected me. . .if it is not 3.0 specific, perhaps a mod can move this post for me?

Last night I checked out the Pixeljunk Monsters demo. After downloading it and attempting to run it for the first time, I was prompted to download the latest version (same 64 meg size as the original, hrrm). After that completed I checked out the game with the better half and decided to purchase the full thing.

I went to the store and purchased it which leads to the download option in the basket. After clicking the download button and watching the progress dialog finish I received a OS notification along the lines of "the latest version of this software is already installed". Uh, Ok. Could have told me that before wasting everyone's bandwidth, he he.

So I exited the store and launched the game. It was still the demo version. I noticed the "unlock" option on the game's main menu which leads to the store so I chose that and then was given a new notification saying something like "you have already purchased this game, check your download list". After some digging I found the download list under the XMB account menu but was told that the game was already installed when I tried to install it from there (I forget whether it downloaded it again or not).

The only way to fix this was to delete the game altogether and then reinstall it from the download list. Upon the first run it re-download the new version again (why doesn't Sony just put the new version in the store?)

What I am not sure about is whether this counts against my future downloads of the game. . .if so, that sucks. There was also one other anomaly where I had both a normal "launch this game" icon and the pre-installed game icon on the XMB (I think this was after I deleted the game and went to re-download it). Strange behaviour all around.

Anyone else encounter this situation?

Cheers

Games have unlimited download as long as you only play it on up to 5 PS3s.

I'm not familiar with the issue you encountered.

Yeah, a colleague of mine had the exact same issue with Super Rub-a-dub.

As patsu says, and this is one of the most persistent misconceptions about Sony's DRM here (no doubt perpetuated by people who mostly play on 360s ;) ), there is no number of downloads limit on PSN. The only limit is that your games can be installed and activated on maximum 5 PS3s/PSPs at the same time. If you want to have it on a sixth PS3, all you need to do is deactivate one of the installs on one of the previous five machines.

The only further limitations I know of is that a handful of games (mostly online titles) also tie to your online account, and require a 24h pause between using the game on two different PS3s. Most notably I think these are Warhawk and GT5 Prologue PSN edition. Right, patsu?

Some people just can't be satisfied. If it stays the same, some people will be disappointed....

Then, some people just want the look of other console's interface. Anything less than that will be a disappointment to them. Of course, I believe, none of those people can add anything that can be reasonably used.

I guess overblown cosmetic complaints means nothing is really broken.

Actually its not cosmetic. Its just about ease of use.

Let me get one thing clear,

i think the X360 interface costmetics are awful. It looks absolutely fugly, even with skins. (i dont have the new interface update thing )

Also, i think the XMB is beatuiful. It just looks supersmooth, and some themes are awesome
(i only have the free ones, i like retro i think, and some japanese guy with a sword in the background, and some others).

Im just sad that XBL is more cohersive, (thought this has been fixed to great degree lately, i guess i was a little bit to harsh in my first statement in retro spect.)and lacks cross game voice chat, and voice messaging . Its easier just to say stuff.

That being said, Microsoft totally screws you in terms on money. Profit margins on XBL are insane (we are talking many multiples), and i would never pay for it again. With the amount of money they are making off XBL, they could atleast have paid for some dedicated server clusters.

I would like my theme to become a Screensaver after a few minutes.
Is it me or couldn´t you play music before and go out on the XMB, seems i can not do that anymore... hmm maybe i changed the audio settings, better check :)

Hear that Sony ? It's true.

It's not perfect but please tread lightly when you enhance XMB. We scream because we care.
Go go firmware 3.1 !

The dynamic theme is one of the best ideas in XMB. Now let's wait for the creative developers to make useful things out of it. There are SO MANY possibilities.

Nope wasnt settings.

I just did. You should be able to play music and go into XMB or the web browser uninterrupted.

EDIT: PSN recruiting Game Testers here:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/09/open-casting-call-for-the-tester/

I'd like to volunteer for just firmware upgrade testing. You don't even need to pay me or provide a PS3. I am willing to bet my second one on it if it makes subsequent firmware upgrade more pleasant and predictable to all of us. Of course, I'll keep it secret too. :p

After installing the firmware, first thing I did was disabling "what's new" option.
Besides that I haven't checked the new XMB, but there seems to be a significant change on the
OS side.

Unfortunately I cannot put my finger on it.
It's as if all games now use "something" only first parties were allowed to use previously. It may also be significantly different OS load.
I wish we had some informed developers on real changes with firmware 3.0.

You may need to set output frequency to 48kHz in music settings to fix that problem.

To me, it feels like the timing for some basic tasks have changed.

Everything just feels a little smoother and responsive than before. I think they've done some serious pruning and optimisations to the code. Perhaps getting things ready for a Google powered OS... lol.
