PS3 Firmware 3.0

Personally, I like it.

The larger font looks good on my 42" 1080p TV.

Same here, I also have a 42" 1080p TV. The only thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the new friendlist with the grey boxes. Imo they don't fit with the overall style of XMB. Either lose the boxes completely or make them atleast 50% transparent.

I don't have a ticker going on under the clock at the moment as that doesn't seem to be activated in my region yet. I imagine that would be annoying in the long run.

By the way, all sorts of media sites use IP to determine whether or not you're allowed to access it. The BBC iPlayer website for PC does the same. Hulu does the same. The U.S. Southpark website does the same ... So I don't think it's unlikely that the iPlayer integration (and the others that should follow shortly) are going to be the same also.

Yes, silly me. They probably don't want the end users to create fake PSN accounts to watch movies licensed to other regions. ^_^

Yeah it is not that bad n my TV either.42' 1080p here too.

I think the problem is larger on smaller TV's

Certainly the smaller fonts looked much better before. But I was surprised that so many complained that much about the fonts. Before I updated I thought they were going to be very large. But on my TV they looked just a bit larger to me. Not large enough to annoy me

I got a 40" tv and first thing I wonderd was if the resolution was lowered after the upgrade, so I checked that and then I thought there was some zooming going on and looked for that. But alas it was just the font size, I'd like the original font size, but its not that jarring after a couple of hours usage.

But the friendlist stuff is ugly and the whats new, please let me turn it off. I mean if you do not know what the PSN store is, then you probably are unable to turn it off also :) And if you are able to turn it off, then you most likely know and use the PSN store.

You can turn off that your PS3 goes to the What's New section at startup at least:

From thesixthaxis:
‘What’s New’ icon Shows Sony’s three PlayStation Store picks, last three games played and six latest official news stories or Store downloads. Setting it to ‘Off’ in System Settings does nothing. The ‘What’s New’ icon still appears. It’s just not the default icon on startup.

has anyone tried the network connection test yet? when i ran mine it says my downstream is 6 and my up is 1, when in truth i have 12/1.5 what gives?

Run bandwidth test on your PC to double check. My PS3 is about 300kbps (downstream) and 100kbps (upstream) lower than the PC.

on the pc (and from ps3's web browser) i get ~11 down and ~1.4 up. its just bugging me that the "test internet connection" function only shows 6/1

It's a very, very quick and short test. Too short to give a reliable result, and will always be a little bit lower. It's like when you test using speedtest.net or similar sites - you'll see the speed go up as the test continues. It also has partly to do with the nature of how internet data is transferred.

Finally updated. I can see why people are agitated. Personally I quite like nearly all of it.

Love the sparkly theme. Especially when launching a game or movie. Don't mind the larger fonts either. They look alright on my TV.

The obvious exceptions are what's new, which is simply a banner and shows no interactivity, and to a lesser degree the friends list's grey boxes.

I do agree the XMB has lost a little bit of it's elegance (purely down to the what's new segment). Still, if the furore continues IMO Sony will have to respond.

Argh, what have they done?! Are they trying to reach the older generation by combating short-sightedness with oversized fonts?!--SNIP--.

Back in my day we wore belts made out of tomatoes. And weeeee liked it>

I'm 42 & until I saw the bigger font, I never realized that I had been squinting at my 60" screen.

All hail our giant font overlords!

Heh heh... aren't you supposed to become far-sighted from that point onwards ? :p

Would be cool if they give us 2 font sizes.
In fact, since this update is mostly cosmetic, they should have given us some samples to feedback. Most of us missed these changes in Lempel's demo.

Happened to me. I could sign in from the games but not from XMB. It went away after some time (May be need a cold start ?)

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/02/firmware-3-00-blamed-for-malfunctioning-ps3-controllers/

A growing thread on the official PlayStation 3 forum alleges the recent hardware firmware upgrade to version 3.00 has spawned a host of controller connection issues for PS3 users. According to the forum, various wireless controllers -- some users specifically naming DualShock3 model CECHZC2H (Ceramic White) -- are unable to connect to the console. When turned on, users claim the controller LEDs for ports 1 and 2 are activate, but the controller remains inoperable.

Buahaha... good thing I didn't lay my hands on a white PS3.
