PS3 Firmware 3.0

It's under the "System" settings. Although, it doesn't change much - it only causes your PS3 not to go the "what's new" section when you turn it on. It doesn't disable the ticker in the top right corner nor does it hide the what's new section.

thanks, i was hoping i could just hide it all together:mad: although i did know the ticker would still be there.

I don't know if it's related to fw3.0 but I experienced a dramatic fps drop while playing KZ2 MP. It only happened once but I haven't played more than 45mins or so after fw3.0.

Played more than 380 hours of KZ2 MP and never saw such a dramatic fps drop before fw3.0 .

Not seeing it at start-up though means you can avoid looking at it fairly easily. I think that's good enough. All they need to fix now is the background. Although it's consistent with the other backgrounds for Home and PSN in that section, it's still strange that these things have their own backgrounds. Like the webbrowser, which also has its own background (in my case a blue version of the default sparkly theme - actually looks really nice, but ok).

It's aggravating that the new ticker thing doesn't even link to information. The old "information board", for the ninety seconds it was enabled, at least let me click on its spammy, preposterous headline items in case I really wanted to Learn More. This here though ... it's griefing, basically.

The links are in "What's New". The ticker highlights the promo links one at a time.

Do you want the corresponding "What's New" icon to blink when it's highlighted in the ticker ? I am sure that can be arranged.

What about the native rendering resolution, AA and framerate for those new dynamic PS3 themes?

Anyone here who figured that out?

Is it 1920x1080, 60fps for every dynamic theme so far when XMB is set to 1080p output?

And what about AA?

Some of them are doubled-up in What's New, yes. But what about "Girlz play too"? Where does that lead me?

I understand SCE's need for spreading the messages and maybe bolstering network revenue, but this just seems inefficient both as a UI element and as a marketing tool. If it can't be explored and is completely non-interactive, it's just a dead zone on the screen. Sure, it moves, so it'll take a couple of weeks before you can completely block it out, but that's what will happen. We're now learning that nothing there can ever be relevant, and even in the odd case where it might be, it's just a duplicate of something more functional somewhere else.

Now, with that misunderstanding out of the way...

Everything just feels a little smoother and responsive than before. I think they've done some serious pruning and optimisations to the code. Perhaps getting things ready for a Google powered OS... lol.

At first 3.0 felt a little awkward to me. Unlike the visual changes, the timing differences are much more subtle to discern. Something's off but I couldn't tell what. Perhaps this is one of the reasons behind all the 3.0 complains. It felt like something invisible have sped up, and also something else have slowed a little (e.g., quiting from game is slower now because we need extra time to start the dynamic theme going into XMB). So all our 3 years of XMB usage patterns and habits have been thrown off a little.

I do hope DeanA, archie4oz or Fafalada can confirm or deny some of these perceptions.

keyn/Jardel, I have not encountered any KZ2 slowdown. Could be related to the increased load due to newer Slim owners and returned KZ2 players ?

... and now for something completely awesome ! :p (I know you wet blankets will spoil it, but...)

New dynamic themes incoming:

Unfortunately, they may not be free (yet ?). EU guys, please look away. Pretend [strike]the above link[/strike] this post is not here.

EDIT: This is way cooler than the Home items... until they can make Home items more interactive and useful.

I've not noticed any shift in timings/responsiveness on FW 3.0 here. I would expect the animated theme support (along with anything else running alongside the XMB) makes extensive use of threading anyway, so wouldn't expect it to delay the XMB behaviour at all.

Cheers,
Dean

Thanks for the clarification, Dean.
