Some people just can't be satisfied. If it stays the same, some people will be disappointed. If it changes, some people will be disappointed. If it's all removed, some of those same people will be disappointed.
Then, some people just want the look of other console's interface. Anything less than that will be a disappointment to them. Of course, I believe, none of those people can add anything that can be reasonably used.
I guess overblown cosmetic complaints means nothing is really broken.
The thing is, I'd much rather be disappointed by too few updates, than be shocked with things that are suddenly changed that offer no notable benefit and are forced upon me. In fact, I really wish we'd be moarning about too small updates - then at least, we'd still have that classy, stylish XMB.
The ticker is really a huge joke. Is that how they plan to make PSN more noticed? By effectivelly spamming the user with headlines that say absolutely nothing to the uninformed user? If you're lucky to catch "Visit the PlayStation store" headline (which comes on every few minutes or so), you might realize that the headlines up there have something to do with PSN... Why on earth do I have to read the same old headlines over and over again? Especially laughable since I already saw them on PSN, had no interest then, so spamming me with the headlines will not make it any more attractive.
If anything, they should find a way to inform people of the newest and latest when it's released on PSN and only then. Once you've read it or entered PSN at that point, the info-bulletin (or whatever you'd want to call it) should disappear. This would actually work and be informative while drawing the right attention to it. Having the same messages reapear for days is annoying and will be ignored/overlooked.
The thing that strikes me most about this update, is what seems to be sheer incompetence on Sony part. Getting an update out with new features to spark new interest is one thing - but getting a new update out in a half assed way with notable major flaws another. This update is actually pretty important, since it's effectivelly re-launching the PS3slim.
The grey bars might be a last-minute decision, but why make last-minute decisions? The PS3slim has been a planned entity for surely a few months now - everyone should know what's at stake. Rookie mistakes are inexusable.
The whole argument that the grey bars are simply placeholders is not worth much, if you consider that they should just do it when they're finished and then do it right. The whole firmware updates shouldn't be BETA material.
Same goes for the fonts which are absolutely unwarranted. As some others have noted, the disappearing of list items other than the selected one is just plain annoying. At least if it would only blend out to half the visability, it would be bearable. The way it is now, it's just plain annoying.
