PS Business Briefing 2006 March official info

Maybe I'm slow, but I really don't get this 4d thing... Even after one's posting of those slides...
Excatly what point are they trying to get across with this 4d thing?

The point I think they are trying to get across is that the games will be "ALIVE" so to speak. "Everybody" has a daily routine and actually have things to do instead of just being used to fill up space to make the world seem like its an actual place. I think it has more to do with AI.

In other words...LIVING and BREATHING environments. Is that enough to justify another dimension though? I thought that dealt with space...Silly Ken

How much rumble can they have on a battery-powered device?
Well, a 360 controller usually lasts about 24 hours but it depends on the game you play.

Edit: When I go back and quote somebody else, isn't it supposed to staple onto my previous post?

Yeah, it was the 4rth dimesion that caused the delay. They had implented only 3D so far, so they needed some extra time to implement the 4rth one...

Indeed, tranquility must always come before sanity.*

Well I hope it's true and Sony ditches GDDR-3 for the GPU, and goes with Rambus XDR instead. 512 MB of XDR for the RSX would be sweet.

Would that get rid of that 128-bit bus bottleneck? Or does replacing the GDDR-3 with XDRAM imply they'd had to use a wider bus?

Or could it even mean the 512 MB of XDRAM would constitute a unified memory architecture?

Someone else at AVS also seems to believe they're going with all XDRAM. I don't know, that would be a significant increase in cost, no? Already suppose to be an expensive BOM and now they go with more expensive RAM and maybe an HDD to boot?

Hope it's true but maybe expecting too much.

In addition to potentially being faster straight up (assuming 1400DDR3 is still their target), XDR requires many fewer pins than the GDDR equivalent. So in theory, if they went XDR and bit the bullet for increased XDR modules, they could readily circumvent the 128/256-bit GDDR barrier we've been talking about. But again, that'd require more RAM modules than Sony may be willing to shell out for, regardless of the possibilities/opportunities.

Still, either a move to XDR (which I would very much like aesthetically), or just a plain increase to RAM speed... either would be welcome.

Can someone explain the HDD thing... I'm hella confused... IN LAYMAN'S PLEASE!!!!!

I don't think that there is much to explain. From what has been said until now people have reached various conclusions, eg. it will be needed to play games but it will not be standard with the console, although that is not decided yet, so it might come with it after all, or that it will not need a HDD to play games, but Sony is strongly promoting developers to use it, and that it will be essential for enhanced gamming experience, so to put it simple, noone knows, maybe not even Sony...

copy paste:

Basic services for the PSNP will initially be free, like Xbox Live Silver. However, unlike Microsoft's entry-level online service, which doesn't allow gameplay, the basic level of PSNP will provide gamers with the necessary services and functions required for online gaming, according to Kutaragi.

so friends list, matchmaking, user name, etc + free online play

also this:

Also unlike Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network Platform will allow licensees to connect their own game servers to the network. SCE will provide a common infrastructure for the service, but the PSNP will use the standard Internet. Unlike with Xbox Live, licensees will be able to connect their own game servers to the PSNP.

Are Sony launchinga load of satellites to get realtime maps for the entire world? Until then, KK's going to have to make do with static images...

Regards HDD, using any old 2.5" HDD is excellent. The economy of that will grow over time, you can use older drives you have lying around (I'm sure everyone has at least 3 lower-capacity 2.5" HDDs around there home...), and you won't be paying the Peripheral Premium. £40-50 for 40 GB seems the entry level here in the UK. The cost is then moved to the consumer rather than Sony. Though if you have to buy a separate HDD and PS3 is still expensive, it'll be, um, more expensive.
