Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

I have a u3011 and hardware that can carry a game on it at native res, it in no way makes games on my console unplayable.

You´re totally right. I mean I love to play games on my consoles, although sometimes as stated before some problems can be seen from streching (upscaling) the image, and the end result is not eye pleasing (sub 720p upscaled to 1080p), or the lag. The main problem comes from manufacturers who should put native modes for certain resolutions.

As I've said earlier, according to the leaked Durango dev kit pics, even the weaker of the two possible GPUs (HD6870) is perfectly capable of running BF3 at 1080p 60fps on Ultra settings - so I think it is reasonable to assume they'll be just as many 1080p games next gen as they were 720p this gen, though developers might trade 60fps refresh for prettier pixels at 30 or go the Alan Wake route and render at 720p.

I will be happy with games like BF3@1080p/60 and better graphics@1080p/30 and then, 720p/60. 720p/30 for the most demanding games

Sorry for double post. From vgleaks...

What's inside Durango alpha kit?

We have some details about Durango’s Alpha kit and its components. Bear in mind that these “specs” aren’t final, the ones that Xbox 3/720/Next will have in its final design are bound to vary.
- 8 cores (x64 CPU)
- 12 GB de RAM (8 + 4)
The Alpha kit has 12 GB of RAM, rather than the 8 GB in the final design. The extra 4 GB of RAM facilitates development of console system software.
- DirectX 11.x GPU
The Alpha kit uses a discrete graphics card similar in capability and speed to the GPU that will be included in the final design. The card does not have the ESRAM that the final design GPU will.
- 50GB Blu-ray Disk drive
- HDD, etc

Also we have a list with the components supplied with the Alpha kit.
Alpha kit includes:
- Console build into a PC box
- HDMI cable
- Ethernet cable
- Wired Controller
There also is a separate package that contains:
- A special version of the Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor
- Power cable
- USB cable
- Kinect included if negotiated
You also will need the following items that are not included in the Alpha kit.
- Keyboard
- A monitor or TV that supports a resolution of 1080p and equipped with HDMI input for video and audio, or DVI input for video only
- USB thumb drive with a memory capacity equal to or greater than 2 GB
- Mouse (optional)

The Alpha kit is intended to OS depuration/creation and to give developers a first view of the system.

Anyone else thinks this might indicate that Kinect isn't a pack in with nextbox?

Well, there was that picture in leaked MS roadmap that showed nextgen kinect that had two camera packages mounted on both sides of a TV. Who knows how expensive this setup will be.

Could be Kinect 2 hardware is in limited numbers, so you have to argue your case for needing it. If not doing anything specially with Kinect, use of conventional hardware (microphone, existing Kinect) could be enough to integrate and test Kinect API calls.

I don't think devs should force themselves to hit 1080p if it means sacrificing pixel quality. In fact, I really hope most devs target 720p and try to push the pixel quality a lot. If a dev make a game that run at 1080p60, I'll be thinking how much beautiful it would look in 720p60 (or even 30 for slow non twitch games like rpg). If they can really improve on the pixel quality, they can use the extra power at 720p for better AA. If the game is really simplistic in visual that it can run in 1080p with good AA (no/little pixel crawling and too much blurring) then it's fine.

Basically what I'm looking for are (somewhat in order) :
1.min 720p
2.stable and good enough frame rate (I can tolerate dips, especially for jrpg).
3.pixel quality (including good AA)
If they can achieve all of that and still have power to spare (which I assume can't be used to improve pixel quality) then they can start to up the resolution as long as point 2 and 3 don't change.

That 8GB + 4GB figure doesn't add up. Assuming by 8GB they mean system memory and 4GB of GPU memory, but GPU in dev kit is max 2GB.

Then... Fake?
I guess the person who posted it (or someone who sent it to him) was closely looking at forums and articles from more reliable sites and ran with it. Its pretty much well known fact that Durango is 8GB and 8 core CPU. There may be surprises, but everything points in that direction. Than there is BG's quote too...

Either he copied BGs post and other things from b3d, or someone with dev kit gave him the same info. Latter is less likely, although it could be since he specifically mentioned "Kinect 2 negotiating". Don't know the reason why anyone would make up stuff like that.

What about vgleaks.com? Are they "legit"? They must take care of what to post, verifying their sources.

I really don't know. I know they had Wii U dev kit shots first, and Durango dev kit but I'm not sure if they have their sourcse. They may get some info anonymously and than post it, so it is hard to track down. You can't just email big gaming site and say specs, you need to be "verified" source, but VGleaks probably don't ask who you are.

There was interesting bit on GAF today. One member mentioned having friend working on Durango.

I just had a talk with a friend working in a game for the next Xbox console and he says they are doing quite amazing stuff with the kits but that in terms of power it's basically at the level of a top PC of today so I guess we will see a jump in quality from previous gen but not the kind of generational leap we had in previous one's. I think I might go PC only next gen unless wiiu really brings something. new to the table
