Edge rumorish thing

Seems more support for 8GB, as well as the 3GB for OS rumor.

Hadn't heard the rumour about 3GB reserved for the OS. That is huge, I mean that is far more than you have for the OS on PCs. I can understand you might want to futureproof a bit. It is difficult to tell developers that 7GB are your to use and 1 GB for OS and then a few years later you realize that you need more for the OS, but still 3GB? Would it be for really fast app switching? You basically have all your apps loaded in RAM all the time or something. Would that 3GB then include kinect as well? We will find out I guess...

If the nextXbox has 8 Gb of DDR3 and just 5 Gb for games and the PS4 has 4 Gb of GDDR5 and uses less RAM for the OS, it could end up being the best solution.

Yes I agree, but there is also the distinct possibility of a 5GB-2GB split (which will be less outlandish than 8-2!).

Then, Sony will also have to reserve some RAM for OS, and if they wish to have significant set top box intentions of any sort, possibly a significant chunk (such that 2Gb could become 1.5GB, 4GB become 3GB, and the like).

In the newest issue of Edge Magazine, Creative Director and Senior Manager Takeshi Nozue mentioned that the Agni’s Philosophy real-time tech demo, running on the Nvidia’s GTX 680, was a challenge due to the amount of RAM available.

“Memory size is the biggest challenge,” Nozue stated.

“The texture quality in the Agni’s Philosophy demo is an enormous drain and it’s clear that the next-generation consoles will have to carry a fat wedge of RAM if they’re to support Square’s tech,” Edge elaborated.

This certainly bodes well for MS heavy RAM intentions, apparently.

Square Enix already confirmed they were using assets straight out of their CGI studio however. Assets they could never concievably use in a game as they'd practically have no ram left to run the actual game code.

Also, in the same article you quoted they confirmed it was running on a GTX 680 with 2GB of RAM. A PS4 with 4GB GDDR5 would be more than enough for an optimised videogame based on that demo.

Also, if sony has any plans for a PS4 set-top box, then they can always do it later as a separate SKU with an added 2-3GB DDR4. Or even as an add-on module to the base PS4 unit. No reason to pack in such functionality into every box if it's going to be essentially worthless to alot of consumers (I already have a Sky box and a DVR, plus freeview built into my TV).

How boring is all the set-top box talk and all the video streaming. I want my console to play games. I already have my digital-TV provider, don´t need to pay for another one. But it seems both consoles are going to be like that.

What is the Windows 8 footprint on phones? I could see some Windows 8 variant similar to WindowsRT running on the console, but not one with the ability to run the full application environment with productivity applications etc.

<insert cell phones will have 2GB+ comment> :p

The thing is, none of that will take away from gaming. It's all software. The hardware, whether it does or does not do multimedia functions, would basically be the same. So don't worry that any of this stuff is somehow going to mean less or lower quality games.

But not in the grand scheme of things though, unless MS decides to switch to a 680gtx:) from a 1.1tf gpu.
In any case I would ignore all that for now since Agni was not optimized for a realtime console game, who knows what the requirement would be once it's fully tweaked and tuned for console boxes.

For me it is not an either or situation. As long as the gaming does not suffer, I say use the consoles for as many things as possible, whether it is playing movies or having some wheather app, why not, it in no way affects the ability of the machine to play games. If nothing else, it makes it an easier sale, for me at least, to my better half...

Well if the OS is reserving inordinate amounts of RAM from the game for concurrent multimedia services to be running in the background, then it sure as hell will take away from gaming.

And if the rumour of 3GB reserved out of the 8GB for Durango (not that I believe it that is) is true, then that's something significant taken away from gaming for all this other ancilliary stuff.

So if you had 5GB of memory for your games, rather than the 4GB everyone was expecting these consoles to have, then that would be a big problem?

Either way, I don't believe that rumour for a second. Unless this thing is running full-blown Windows 8, I can't see how they'd burn through about 2.5 GB worth of RAM on background applications. Even then, I have no idea how they'd use that much, unless the OS allows heavy application multi-tasking. Windows 8 desktop, from what I can find, has a memory footprint of less than 300 MB with a clean install.

I'll tune back into this thread when there is some real information coming out.
