Ok B3D. Give me the rundown of the feasibility of 256GB/S GDDR5 ram and presence of 100MB eDRAM. Those sounds quite expencive.

NeoGAF are currently discussing these specs in regards to a new XBox -

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=452095&page=30

CPU : IBM Power 710

- Architecture : IBM POWER7

- Cores : 6 Core

- Clockspeed : 3.72 GHz

GPU : Custom AMD Radeon HD Graphics

- Configuration : Single Die Dual Core

- Clockspeed : 750MHz

- Daughter Die : Renesas Electronics 100MB eDRAM

RAM : 2GB 512-Bit GDDR5 256GB/s (Unified Memory Architecture)

Oh good grief, even GAF stoops to a new low. That spec sheet is courtesy of Texan as he was known on B3D. The guy who's been around forever on the internet making up fake Sega next gen console specs.

Where's the xdr2?????

I just had a thought about the "Xbox Loop" specs as basically detailed here http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/11/16/xbox-720-loop-hardware-specs-leaked/

Of course I'm still taking it with a grain of salt but at least these sound reasonable so I'm not so inclined to laugh at them...except for the whole dual GPU thing.

But I started thinking, somebody on neogaf mentioned the dual GPU as being a 6990. Others have mentioned these specs are probably dev kit specs.

I guess the point is, is it possible MS is using something like a 6990, because these are dev kits, and it takes a 6990 to approximate the actual high end Southern Islands/HD 7XXX single GPU that will actually be used but isn't available yet?

If so, yowza, that's a lot of power.

All idle speculation, of course.

Yo Dawg...I heard you like RAM so I put RAM in your RAM so you can RAM while you RAM

Maybe they down clocked a 6990 and disabled some cores to approximate the upcoming AMD GPU? It might be that the GPU would be somewhere in between a 6970 and a 6990 in power, so they used a gimped 6990 for development purposes.

I speculate that a customized 28nm chip with lower clocks, no onboard ram (how much watt does 1GB of GDDR5 use?), no fan, stripped of eyefinity, audio controller, can possibly be power moderate enough to be in console and be comparable to a gimped 6990. As someone mentioned before in this thread, the xbox 360 alpha kits had two X800 in crossfire that drawed more power than a launch 360. The amazing thing was that the dev kits were 25% of the power of 360.

The most comparable single GPU solution in the Southern island series would be a 7970? Then again, I am just speculating.

4 teraflops (7970) is about the higher end of what MS can achieve with their GPU for the next Xbox.

I didn't want to say anything sooner even though I was thinking about it, but if masuta is Texan color me not surprised. At this point it is starting to look quite likely to me and the surprise would be, if he is not him.

One more thought on the legitimacy of the Infinity and Loop rumors... AFAIK there has been sort of a direct order inside MS to have geography-inspired code names for projects (hence: Natal). There's obviously less legal troubles in case of leak when you have Project Kathmandu or Project Chomolungma than Project Coca-Cola or Project Porsche.

Hmm, seems possibly a very valid point.

LOL, project Coca Cola. Now that'd be funny.

And project Porsche could be the set top box version, ROFL. People would be dumbfounded.

With that amount of eDRAM, there would be no need for uber-fast GDDR5 and 512bit MC. 100 Gb/s would be plenty enough (128bit, 6.25 Gbit)
Actually, the 100 mb of eDRAM is not a craxy number. At 32nm, IBM eDRAM has the right density to achieve 100 mb in around 90 mm^2, which is about the size of Xbox 360 daughter die. But no way they are using Power7 architecture, or dual-core GPUs .

If it still has a daughter die with writing only capable ROPs, main memory would still have to be enough for all texture/shader access and CPU.

Although I'm quite sure that the design will be somewhat more flexible this time.
