Playstation 3: Hardware Info and Price

Saw that too.

Has Sony said how much those wireless controllers are or what kind of batteries (Li Ion, NiMH, proprietary or AA/AAA) they come with?

It'll probably be $50 at least and who knows how much extra for the USB charge cable?

It seems like a standard 5 pin mini-usb cable to me...

Not sure about what batteries but they said 24 hours battery life at Gamespot.

As for no wireless because the 20gig doesn't support bluetooth...that goes against the spec sheets that we've been looking at since E3 started (clearly says Bluetooth 2.0 EDR is supported in both SKUs).

You are right, as a matter of fact it actually shows the wireless controllers separate from the edr (listed under communication). Actually having it separate like that may mean that you can connect BT Cell Phones to it (BT DUN) or even transfer contacts. Nifty...

Oh. Errr.....why yes of course. I knew it was listed separately and it was definitely not an oversight on my part  .

Someone is confusing the lack of wi-fi with the ability to have a wireless controller...
It is amazing how many threads that gamesradar info has popped up in. After rounin prompted me to look at the press release again I changed my tune (as was seen a few post up). I hope gamesradar prints a retraction of sorts, it is getting tiring seeing the same misinformation posted everywhere. *Of course with all the hits they must be getting I don't forsee it happening any time soon.

Here's something to cheer up :D

Well there's one positive outcome though:

For use in living rooms, maximum heat and noise reduction has been achieved with a noise level equivalent to that of the current slim-line PlayStation 2.
I find this hard to believe. 90% of the noise from my 360 is from the DVD drive. When that thing spins up it sounds like a jet engine. The rotational speed on the PS3 is 4x the PS2, they can't tell me it won't be louder.

Hm ? I thought Xbox 360 should be quiet when the DVD drive is spinning constantly (like when watching movie) ? Are you positive that it's the DVD drive that sound like a jet engine ?

I really don't think XB360 is loud...it is fairly quiet after initial loading.
Well, my 360 is sitting like 1 feet away from my PC so I won't be hearing from 360 anyways...lol

Silly Sony ;)

"On one table Sony execs proudly displayed two ARs playing early Blu-ray content: The House of Flying Daggers (below). They even had the Blu-ray packaging. So exciting...but WAIT! I went ahead and ejected one of the Blu-ray drives to see my first Blu-ray disc. Instead, I found a crummy, old school DV-R, complete with the Sharpie-written, House of Flying Daggers. Apparently even Sony can't get its hands on Blu-ray content!"

Somebody wanna make a "priceless" ad?

Now wait though - I understand the humor, but how is it console related? ;)

Yes, by far the loudest thing is the DVD drive. The fans are noticable when the DVD is silent, but not overwhelmingly loud. I would expect the PS3 to be quieter than the 360, simply because the DVD drive doesn't spin as fast.

I have the Samsung drive in my 360, which is said to be the quieter of the two types, and It sounds like a rocket taking off. My 16x PC dvd drive is barely noticeable even at full speed -- so it's quite possible to have a disc spinning faster that doesn't sound like a jet engine (my 360 and PC are right next to each other, so it isn't hard to compare).

Wouldn't it just be doubling the rotation speed of the PS2 drive? I don't have the DVD rotation speed figures on hand, but if we say DVD rotation speed is X and PS2 rotation speed is 4X, then PS3's 8X dvd would merely be twice than of the PS2 (not 4 times). Not sure on the speed of 2x BR, rpm wise, but I imagine it's around the same as 8x DVD. I'd be surprised if PS3 wasn't rather substantially quieter -- given that the loudest part is the disc spinning, and PS3's won't be spinning as fast (and then count the fact that air resistance goes up 4x every time you double the speed, iirc, which only causes more noise)

I think that rpm wise DVD 16x = BR 10x so the PS3 with BD-ROMs would be slower than the PS2 with DVDs.

PS2 running DVDs is practically a non-issue as you don't hear the drive. It's the CD-ROM games that are quite loud. Launch PS2 systems also suffered from the cooling-fan which happened to be very noisy. I expect the loudest part of the PS3 to be the cooling-fan. Playing BR-Roms at 2x shouldn't be any louder than the 4x DVD drive PS2 uses.
