Rambus Technology Provides Unprecedented Bandwidth to Sony Computer Entertainment's Playstation®3

XDRâ„¢ memory interface and FlexIOâ„¢ processor bus enable high performance computing and rich graphics for multimedia applications

E3 Expo, Los Angeles, Calif., - May 16, 2005 – Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS), one of the world's premier technology licensing companies specializing in high-speed chip interfaces, today revealed that Sony Computer Entertainment's PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system incorporates Rambus's XDR™ memory and FlexIO™ processor bus interface solutions for unprecedented bandwidth levels. PLAYSTATION 3 is based on the revolutionary Cell processor that has been developed by IBM, Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Toshiba Corporation. The memory and processor bus interfaces were designed by Rambus to help enable high performance computing, rich graphics and real-life images.

"It gives us great pride to see a project of this magnitude come to fruition after the years of successful collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment to design and deliver this incredibly efficient and state-of-the-art computer entertainment system," said Harold Hughes, chief executive officer at Rambus. "Our goal remains to deliver the world's fastest interface solutions which our customers can easily integrate into their designs allowing them to focus on their core business of bringing the world's most advanced, high-volume systems to the marketplace."

The Rambus XDR memory interface, capable of data rates of 3.2GHz to 8.0GHz, achieves data rate speeds that are an order of magnitude higher than today's mainstream memory systems while utilizing fewer DRAMs and fewer controller pins. FlexIO processor buses are capable of running up to 8.0GHz data rates providing bandwidth more than four times faster than best-of-class processor buses available today. All Rambus high-speed interfaces are developed as complete solutions for high-volume, low-cost systems.

THANK YOU JVD!!! Badly needed.

Now, can we have a little sum-up of everything that's been said? Cause going through 782 pages is a bit long...

the link to ign is a really good summary . It should bring u up to speed. It has the pictures of the console , controller , the specs , pictures of the games , what was said at the show and other things .

Man i just looked at the trailers, and if (IF) that Killzone footage is what we can expect from a next gen game, i'm VERY happy.

What leaves me a bit dubious about the realtimeity (i just made that word up) of the videos is... Why didn't MS have any decent video to show last week, while Sony already seem to have lots of material running very well on PS3?

It either means that most of that footage they showed isn't realtime, or... or what?

It just feels strange, since X360 is going to be released much sooner than PS3...

I am going to go ahead and assume that some footage (like Killzone) is "artist rendition of target look for PS3" and not real-time render. I mean some of this killzone stuff wouldn't look out of place for Final Fantasty: Spirits Within. I'm sure PS3 can deliver some good stuff, but considering that xbox360 games are having framerate issues at E3 due to lack of final hardware (and developers producing mostly on alpha dev kits), and ps3 hardware is further behind, how is something like killzone running 60fps, no slow down? I dunno, seems fishy to me.

Well thanks a lot jvd!!!
I had been typing my impressions of PS3 for the last hour or so and when I press submit all my hard work vanishes :devilish:

So, now you won't be getting but a short summary of my literary masterpiece.

I'm Impressed by PS3 showing.
That doesn't necessarily mean I'll be as impressed when I see actual confirmed game footage and the PS3 is finally in my livingroom, but Sony does know how to make a good impression and start the hype.

After all, it does give you a hint of what the PS3 will be capable of, regardless if much of the footage seen was prerendered or not, as it'll be the same with the competitors too.
There's only that much you can exaggarate with prerendered cgi game concepts to be believable. If you exaggarate too much it will backlash, no company is that stupid (I hope ;))

I like the hardware design, many questions are still left unanswered (please see the questions I ask in the post that I made for PS3 E3 v.2 thread, which was locked and so also my long list of ???'s vanished :devilish: :devilish: )
Would've liked a more angular design more, this looks a bit too much like something I've already recently seen with some combo hifi gear (B&O?)

The controller looks odd, to me it doesn't look that ugly, but a bit odd.
The longer handles are a very good thing. Also the slightly angled buttons.
The shoulder buttons look oddly far away. Triggers?
Analog sticks look to be also positioned better than DS.
It could either be more ergonomic than DS, or worse. Only when we get our hands on it we'll know.

What's behind the front trapdoor? Places for the various memory cards? What about PS2/1 memorycards? How do you transfer PS2 gamesaves if there is no place for one?

Edit: Ok, now I can continue this post as I was able to safely post it without it vanishing :devilish:

Before the conference it was said they'll show a "Prototype of PS3".
So there's a possibility the looks of the console and controller will change, as it did with PSP very soon after they first unveiled the prototype design.

What about the various different models of PS3, the basic and more advanced "all in one" devices?

Will it be able to record from TV? There doesn't seem to be connections for that in the current design :? Does it have a DVB tuner inside? I hope you can then choose between DVB-T and DVB-C.

Oh yes, and it's great to see Sony's not forcing you to only use Sony gear if you want to connect to PS3.... now who was it that said.......

That's my thoughts.

Gears of War looked fine, but was choppy as hell, and this Killzone "footage" just kills it on every aspect.

If ps3 release date is as far away as everyone thought, i really don't think that was realtime. Much like 90% of the stuff shown so far.

Or maybe PS3 will be release sooner than expected...? It seems the hardware is in the very final stages, a whole year would be a long time just to "get things right".

I'm still in awe over that Killzone video, whatever it was, it looked gorgeous.

One thing i'm noticing from most videos on both X360 and PS3 is that they're pushing a lot the whole "lots of stuff on screen at once". Lots of people, lots of... stuff. And i LOVE a screen filled with stuff to kill, break, move, look at...

I'm happy! :D

Here's my impression of the conference....Smoke and Mirrors.

Some of it was realtime and some of it were just prerendered concepts.

The realtime stuff is believable, like the Spiderman demo, EA boxing game, GOW demo, FF demo, GT reel, etc.

There's no way KZ is realtime. If it is it's not what you're gonna see ingame. Sure if you dedicated all the processing power and art resources to creating a realtime cutscene at 30fps then yeah it's believable. Keep in mind this is based off of the low quality video though.

BTW anyone notice the guy in the audience that said WOW when they revealed the PS3? Friggen hilarious.

Oh and lb, have you seen GOW demo for Xbox360? Looks MUCH better than the GOW demo they showed for PS3.

they showed GOW for ps3? or you mean Unreal2007 demo? its based on the same engine right?

No, sorry, i'm actually basing that on the video MS showed at their conference last week. haven't had the trime to look for the new ones. Link would help ;)

There's very little to doubt. The PS3 is a beast!

It's specs place it around twice as powerful as the Xbox 360 (though there are some number games being played with the shader ops I feel, but the Cell vs. the Xbox 360 CPU seems a bit more clear in this direction)

One thing everyone should note when doubting these vids is that Tim Sweeney had but two months with the PS3 and was able to get a UT2007 demo up and running that performed much better on the PS3 than GOW on the Xbox 360. I think Tim is to be believed with how much time they had so and really only stating...this is getting the Unreal Engine up and running on the PS3. That would speak to the PS3 simply being a more powerful system. Right now the PS3 has more silicon operating faster than the Xbox 360 does. Look at the spec sheets...it's roughly twice the trannies and/or faster parts straight down the list. (I think MS had better toss a PPU in so that it's own CPU can focus more on tesselation etc)

I understand that everything we've seen probably isn't real but it's seem fair to assume that in any case it is representative of what the PS3 can do.

What really scaring me the most right now is the size of the Revolution...it just seems to small for an active cooling system to be in place...and without cooling I can't imagine it's parts are on par with the PS3 and Xbox 360. That's just a bad feeling at the moment though since we haven't seen the system yet.

edit:

By the way ign is now host some very high quality vids of the PS3 games and demos. Hopefully tomorrow the same will be done for the Xbox 360 and perhaps we could blame bad vids for the impression of bad framerates...if not then this is really telling. GoW character etc seem to have been in the works for a VERY long time...in fact maybe since the original demos of the Unreal 3.0 engine and with that much time and still framerate issues...MS either needs better tools or better HW somewhere if it wishes to compete with the PS3.

It may not...it's not like the Xbox 360 looks bad or something and they do have another aspect to focus the fanbase on...LIVE or should is Halo3->LIVE!

end edit:

Just what we need, a lock for this thread too t:rolleyes:

Of course it's partly smoke and mirrors, it's smoke and mirrors with every company at E3, that's expected and accepted.

Wasn't it already said in thread v.1 and v.2 that this should be kept strictly PS3, no xbox360 or "Revolution" flames?

But of course, PC-Engine just has to come here with "xbox360 this and that looks better than PS3 this and that"

Go away or behave!

I thinK Sony has seriously set them up for giant fall with the fake Killzone 2 footage.

It's specs place it around twice as powerful as the Xbox 360 (though there are some number games being played with the shader ops I feel, but the Cell vs. the Xbox 360 CPU seems a bit more clear in this direction)

My ass its twice as powerful. X360 GPU kills the PS3 GPU.

I really envy you guys with BB connections. Grrr! o_O

BTW, is it Killzone 2 o 3 bec'se KZ2 was supposed to be on PS2. nAo? :?:

If i hear PPU again i'm gonna throw up.

PPU! I like the concept and what it would provide me as a gamer...sorry :(

Really though I only mentioned it as a means for MS to close the performance gap between the Cell and it's own CPU. It would add trannies to the system and lessen the workload on the trie-core CPU so that it could go more tick for tack with the Cell processor and still be able to retain welll actually provide better support for robust physics. I don't think everything is purely set in stone for any of the console makers as Sony could just as easily bump the Cell clock up and turn back on that redundant SPE the PS3's Cell is toating around.

...just some friendly banter bro, geesh!

I don't suppose you have a source somewhat more credible than "your ass"? Because 2X the shader power does seem to be the way it is.

Not to sound picky, but jvd, do u mind doing something about the title of the thread... "Playstation 3 E3 thread 3"... 3 times 3... 666... The power of 3 will set us free. *headache*

so this means that Sony has a devkit with a cell AND a RSX graphicchip already inside?

was tim sweeney showed the demo on a cell+GF6800ULTRAin sli kind of way or ...?

so i'm guessing few of these (if not all) demos are running in 1-25fps so they upscaled the 'realtime demos' to what they believe will be the estimated speed of the RSX gpu? (frame by frame rerendered to 60fps trough recording)
