Pet peeves you want to see gone next-gen

My pet peeves:

New Xbox controller please; Personally I find it too big, not uncomfortable, but not comfortable either, the black and white buttons should be placed better, where they are more easily reached. And above all else please Microsoft please, get right of the clear plastic bubble on the controller, without fail that things reflects light into your eyes making it very difficult to play. Okay I'm done with my controller rant

Instead, MS should actually just produce multiple types of controllers instead of catering to only one kind of hand. I mean, come on. People have hand sizes from elfin all the way to ogrish.

I find the xbox controller the most comfortable thing ever, and I wished I bought a couple spare big controllers.

Oops I should have clarified what I meant a bit better, my bad. Too big as in too chunky. I do agree with you though, multiple controller sizes would be ideal, but perhaps not cost effective for ms. In terms of controllers I still believe the GC and PS2 controllers are better that XBox, but thats just my personal preference.

I say lose the non-standard controller interface and just use USB ports for connecting any controller of your choice.

Cool :) (sorry if I sounded impatient.. now that I'm re-reading my post lol )

they need to get rid of the nobbie things
I'm with Sage on this one. It would be nice with joysticks where you can to use two or three fingers to control them, that would give you much more precision, speed and secureness that your grip isn't going to slip.

joysticks are just entirely deplorable except for situations like a flight sim or racing game. It's like using the keyboard instead of mouselook. With a mouse you move to the point you want, it's as fast and precise as you can move your hand. With a joystick / nobbie thing you are setting a direction in which to move in. It's like being drunk- you just kind of sway around and hope that you get close enough. That's what it is- trying to use nobbie things are like being drunk!

What about platformers, fps. movement (instead of WASD), strategy games for moving you view... or just about any game type I can think of.
Springy and free controls complement each other very well, but if you had to choose, springy controls are acceptable for most games, whereas free controls are unacceptable for a large number of games (try playing an fps. with two mice).

yes, springy controllers have their uses along side a real controller. but for platformer's I'd MUCH rather have buttons. for fps movement I can't stand springy. for moving the view in a strategy game i can see that would work but dont see it would be of any benefit over buttons. springy controllers may be acceptable for most games but spingy alone is simply unacceptable for most... and very few games are springy controllers actually better than buttons + free

Well until we get a trackball or any thing that gives as much precision (or more) than a mouse, i think we'll have to make do with the springy nipple things.

hmm... i have a good idea... how about a mouse

or, how about just putting some R&D into comming up with a better option. and don't tell me that Sony nor MS have enough money to really exhaust the options.

People dont like mouse and consoles coupled up cause u cant use a mouse on ur sofa. And i'm sure Sony and MS are investing enough to come up with new ideas to control games. If Sony came up with the Eyetoy (which in future will have much bigger repercussions on games), then i'm sure they and MS and N can come up with a way to make controllers much more precise.

You know people act like Sony came up with the Eyetoy out of the blue but its doesn't seem that much different than a more sophisticated version of those virtual reality programs you could play with often at science museums (normally had like a game of volleyball setup or something).

Yeah i know, and there was somethng very similar on PC years ago. What i and other people mean usually is that Sony came up with the idea to couple those ideas to -GASP- videogames.

What I mean by springy is that it is self-centring, in that sense buttons (like WASD, D-pad or analog nub) are springy controls.
I can't seriously believe that you would rather control a 3d platformer with digital controls instead or some kind of analog stick. Fps. games also benefit a lot from analog movement control.
There are certain gametypes where the speed and tactile feedback of buttons/D-pad can be beneficial, but even then it works better when the input device is shaped like a stick or nub. Ask any NeoGeo Pocket owner or avid beathemup player about that.
Free controls coupled with an analog that can, by a switch, be locked to digital buttons if necessary, and decent array of buttons is my idea of an ideal controller for now.

ahh okay, i thought you meant nubbies

I don't play 3d platformers because there aren't any decent controlls for them. if i could use a keyboard+mouse then I probably would play them a lot.

I strongly disagree. I can't stand the analog movement, it henders me.

no, i think sticks / nubbies slow you down way too much. you have to move them too far and they aren't nearly as accurate as buttons- you mean to go straight and instead you go straignt and just a tiny bit to the left.
Ask any NeoGeo Pocket owner or avid beathemup player about that.
try it in UT.... your nubbies get demolished

i dont think so. you cant turn an analog controller into a true digital controller. analog controllers are squishy and squishy means inaccurate and slow.

U'd want to play platformers with a key+mouse, but you cant stand analogue movement in FPS!? Mouse is analog!!
