NPD April 2007

until they come down in price sales will be slow for both 360 and ps3

I'm expecting a $100 price drop on the 360 around Halo3 launch for a huge push past the holidays.

If the 360 drops, the PS3 doesn't really have a choice but to drop price or they'll be left behind considerably going into 08. I do think Sony has a price drop planned regardless of the 360's pricing though.

Yeah well the 360 monthly figures aren't anything to brag about - they just can't be classified as ass! :p

Microsoft at least has the "We've been out 18 months with no price drop" excuse though. If they wanted to, they could probably make these numbers go up by 100k ($100 price drop).

Sony has nothing.

MS needs to drop the price! No idea what they are waiting for.

MS are getting over confident i think. The PS3 will start dropping in price soon, and they still have a lot of casual supporters. On the other hand, just waiting it out until fall with the 65nn fabrication (and probably a much more reliable system) would save a nice sum of money.

MS had a new SKU which many people were waiting for and many stores broke the release date weeks early (My buddy camped out at Walmart for one). Sony dropped it's low end SKU, effectively making it $120-$200 more than the competition and no no new games. So who has the most excuses is debatable, in their relative maturity they are both doing poorly, but they both have good games and price cuts in the near furure to look forward to.

WTF is buying the Wiis? I still don't know anyone who owns one...

I recall last year when people were making fun of 360 monthly figures. Claiming how the 360 was dying before the PS3 even arrived and how PS3 will make it look stupid and what not.....

Prepare for comments like this:

"Well it costs $600, what did you expect?"
"Lol, it has liek no games!! Wait for the killerapps to come out!!"

Irony of it all is that Sony pro-claimed their PS3 would sell 5 million consoles even if they didn't bother to make any games for it.

On a more serious note, what do people think will happen when Sony cuts the price? MS will almost certainly follow, but what im curious about is when the PS3 hits say, 300-400, will their loyal userbase of casuals start buying Ps3? Of course nobody can say, but i reckon that a PS3 at the same price (or only slightly higher than the x360) would whipe the floor with the X360, in terms of sales

Well many analysts are saying Sony is it's own worst enemy right now. The PS2 continues to sell and get good games. The question is whether or not that is part of the long term plan. Will these PS2 owners sit in the last gen until something pushes them into the next one? Will it be a price drop or a next gen franchise release or both?

I know several PS2 owners who are just patiently waiting on the Ps3, these are casual people and not early adopters. Everyone I know from the Xbox side already owns a 360 (one owns two), there is no Xbox1 support so MS helped with the next gen push in that respect.

So the question is how many of these million of PS2 gamers can MS and Nin steal away before Sony can reclaim them?

All dependent on the marketing of the system as well as regional acceptance. In the US I doubt even with comparable prices the PS3 would equal the 360 in sales as the console seems to be getting a better vibe amongst consumers. In other parts of the world (Europe) Im willing to bet that you are correct. I doubt that the mainstream gamers/consumers have much loyalty towards console manufacturers they simply want what is "hip". Most everyone I know that had the PS2 didnt buy it out of loyalty they bought it simply because thats what their friends had, it was affordable, it was marketed well, and had a quality line up of titles.

The Wii seems to have universal acceptance.

I seriously doubt the desire for the Elite as much as you put it. I seriously doubt it'll much of an effect on the 360's numbers.

BTW, how much did the 20GB SKU represent in PS3 sales? For the SKU no one wanted, its odd to see people then claim it could put such an negative effect on the PS3.

Also, I know five people with Wii's and I know at least 10 who wants one, including myself. Just think its a bit over priced at this point, but once it hits $150, I'll be right on it.

If they are following the Sony price drop model, they'll likely do it Sept/Oct, with very little prior warning.

MS seem to be ignoring Nintendo for the moment and aiming straight at Sony. In the same month (April) both MS and Sony effectively raised the price of their consoles by 80/100 each.

I really don't understand why both are being SO bullish. The 360 probably almost have tapped out of their hardcore demographic willing to pay 400+ already. I hope they wise up come Halo 3 time with $100 drop.

Sony, well the PS3 needs a few price drops before the consumer jumps in (and a few killer games wouldn't hurt).

.

Um..... Until you see people buying Elites more than Premiums that statement is ridiculous.

It's about perception. Many people only look at the top-priced SKU (no matter what's in it), and discard the lower-priced ones as "tard packs". In this regard, the Elite may actually have a negative impact on overall 360 sales, if too many people consider that the price of entry for a 360 is now $480, which they can't afford.

The Elites pretty much sold out everywhere in the first week, I'm guessing 30k at least. My friend camped Walmart on release day and the four there sold out at opening. I asked around at my local stores, they had none in stock - so someone is buying them.

The 20GB PS3 did not hurt sales itself, but it hurt the price image. When people ask how much the PS3 is the only answer is $600, that will hurt sales.

That's pretty much what I expect. Deliver the 1-2 punch and carry the momentum throughout the holidays. Esp. with GTA4, Mass Effect and PGR4 also coming after Halo3.

Dropping the price now would not have as much of an impact than doing it around the time people get into the buying season.

i know i don't have any sense of marketing, but this is my quick thoughts...

microsoft not dropping price can have adverse effect on SCEI imo, that it will keep ps3 more likely at $599 because there is less pressure for them to drop price if microsoft don't drop their. by doing that microsoft believes it can keep ps3 sales low whilst hoping themselves can increase sales by selling their own games.

sorry for my bad analysis though, i am sure there are some flaws right there
