nintendo comments on revolution

Saturo Iwata, President of Nintendo, June 2004:-

"We at Nintendo aren't brushing off the need for high end technology. But we think there is more then one way of taking advantage of it."

This isnt directly related to this argument. But since this is a thread about Nintendo comments, here are some more recent comment. This time from Nintendo of America Vice President of marketing:

"As always, there are always lessons learned. One thing the GameCube taught us is the importance of pleasing as many different types of gamers in the market as possible. For example, the physical design of the hardware itself was a bold attempt by us to do this -- to make a system that is stylish in its own way and that will fit in well with a family living room. In hindsight, the color choice and box design may not have been as helpful in achieving that goal".

"Sony and Microsoft both aimed the design of their systems toward the one-color scheme with a purely masculine feel. But with that came their own issues, including constant comments about the size of the systems -- especially the Xbox, which for some time, was teased as being as big as a tea table for consumers in Japan. So, lessons learned for all, I think".

And finally, in speaking directly on what Sony and Microsoft did well -- "Sony launched aggressively with a strong third-party line-up, and Microsoft nurtured community with its Xbox Live service".

w00t! We finally agree on something! :p

We can take his comments just about any way we want, but the fact remains that it is stupid as heck for a company president to say that about his forthcoming product.

Have their actually been many details released about the Revolution processor/VPU? Everything I've been reading suggests they're not trying to compete on the graphics front, which I think is a very bad idea for consoles.

XBox 2 and Revolution will use the same core technology, they both even have the same amount of pipelines. So far thats all I know as far as similarities go.

It's too early to discuss it, honestly, but AFAICS Nintendo isn't doing enough to pull in 3rd-parties.

They need 3rd-parties to survive in this market, and IMHO they need to go above and beyond the call of duty when negotiating with them. Give them something to chew on, Nintendo. Order up a couple of PS3-bound exclusives, like MGS4 or Final Fantasy XIII.

Make Revolution interesting and keep the innovation level high, but don't let the average consumer fool you again. They want games.

Lots of them.

You can't be serious.

This kind of attitude will only turn fans away from their next console.

What fans do you speak of? I am more interested in the Revolution than the other two next-gen consoles.

He could have at least lied or acted like their next console was competitive.

Nintendo has the propensity to "go their own way", so they have the tendency to want to "not compete" in this industry. As a matter of fact, IIRC, someone at Nintendo said that one of the primary reasons why Sega had difficulties in this industry is because they "always tried to compete with or copy the market leader". So as you can see, Nintendo is trying not to compete with Sony, but create a new market that they, and only they, will dominate.

Okay, Nintendo hasn't even sent development kits to developers so how could they possibly get any support? It would be jolly good time to start developing for Revolution NOW if one wanted to get any semi good launch games at all.

How many developers have ps3 dev kits ?

Nintendo's come a long way since its days as a manufacturer of playing cards.

I predict that its next home system after Revolution will take the company's multi-screen strategy to its ultimate evolution. It will come standard with 52 different screens, each capable of displaying high resolution hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades.

I wouldn't mind having a gamecube controler with a touch screen instead of the anlog stick . I think it would be better actually . Take it a step further and mate it with a sega vmu and you can have a screen in the controler . That wouldn't be bad

There are around 20 PS3 dev kits in the U.S ATM. How many actual developers have them is another question, probably less then 20. No idea about Japan.

So there are about double the amount of ps3 dev kits than there are ns5 kits .

Not a huge diffrence , neither will have many launch titles unless they all launch late 2006

Virtual Boy didn't fail because it was different... Wink
yea i would have to give the it may cause cancer and eye problems if you look at it for more than 15 mins at a time .

It be kinda hard to beat any game having to pause every 15 mins haha

Nice, I'm glad they realize the purple color made GCN look really cheap like a FisherPrice toy. They should've launched it in the Platinum color they have today. The size OTOH is great. This means Revolution will have better asthetics than GCN.

Now in regards to Iwata's comments, well I think Teasy nailed it. Iwata has made similar comments before and it had NOTHING to do with having inferior technology from Starfox's previous quote. I'm looking forward to new innovations from Revolution since better graphics alone is just....well.....booooorrrinngg!!!

Just look at the DS, awesome idea. They just need to crank out the DS games.

Yes, add back pain to that list too from hunching over a table top to play that damn thing.

A VB today with LCD glasses and a nice 24-bit color palette would be awesome hence the idea behind it is revolutionary just like DS.
