Hardly, the Vita is already $200, if it comes down to $150 it's very good value - compared to stuff like a 3DS or an iTouch or even the overpriced controller accessories for your smartphone/tablet.

Where are you seeing them for $200? Amazon wants $250, over $300 for the 3g bundles. Anyway my point stands if people wanted to play portable games on a small low rez screen, they would already be buying them. The Vita makes the wiiu sales look pretty good.

After all, how could PS3 be on track to outsell 360 despite a much higher price and less time on the market? Probably not much to do with power difference, but it definitely wouldn't have hurt if any such gulf was evident.

let's not forget the Sony console lost ~50% of it's market share from the previous gen and Xbox doubled theirs in the same generation all while Sony had the "technical edge" (CELLPROCESSOR!!) coming out of the gate.

bottom line is if the games look as close to the same as I'm betting they will *to most people* rather than WAAAY apart as the Sony faithful are painting this, these specs won't mean anything significant to the console war. (not to mention factoring in the many other features that mattter)

talk about premature ...

I'll predict right now... 2 months from now when Xbox has its reveal, this week won't matter anymore it will be a complete reset and maybe even momentum swinging back to MS. Also MS will release before Sony in NA and definitely in Europe (possibly even this year) which I believe will be much more important than when it was revealed.

I'm seeing the 3G on eBay here in Australia for $200-220, and my friend picked a WiFi up from EB Games (Gamestop) here for $200 over Christmas.

I would think it'd be cheaper in the US since we get overcharged on all tech stuff.

And it's not about playing on a 6'' screen, it's about playing PS4 games when your TV is otherwise being used, or when you want to lie in bed and play FIFA, or Battlefield.
It'll be great for time consuming genres like RPGs, racing games etc.

And if you're like me and only have a laptop in your room, it'll be much better than playing games on that.
I have a 15" MBP Retina and if I want to play proper games I'd have to boot into Windows and get my 360 controller from the TV room, so Vita mirroring will be easier.

It'd be cheaper to buy a tv for your room.

1. There's no space for a big TV in my room.
2. Buying as good a quality TV as the one in the living room will be far more expensive than a Vita.
3. I can't have the PS4 in my room as my brother also will want to play and it'll double as a media hub for the rest of the family - plus my rooms is far to small a playing space if we have guests.

If they want remote play to actually be used, they better concentrate on getting it to work with the tens of millions of phones and iPads already out there.

Or limit it to the Vita ghetto and it will be barely used by people trying to justify the Vita purchase.

IMHO, Vita is a niche product at this moment. It's for gamers who understand its value (e.g., gamers who can't or don't want to play games in the living room). In a nutshell, it is a "nice to have" product. Not a "must have".

To encourage people to buy Vita, Sony will have to come up with more exclusive, high quality games. Is it enough ? I am not sure; depends on how amazing its games are. PS4 RemotePlay may help but I think it's not compelling enough to draw large crowd too until PS4 library explodes. Playstation Plus free games help in the mean time. Again, I think it's not quite enough to draw the cynics. They lowered the price in Japan, which should push Vita further but not enough to generate huge sales. Gamers' attention will be drawn towards the home consoles later this year. Casual gamers have mobile and tablet games. It is possible that Vita sales will remain slow until one day people realize that it has grown up. ^_^

To ignite people's imagination and passion in Vita quickly, Sony will likely need to think of something else. Perhaps roll the Vita stack into cellphones and tablets, or stack it with incredible values (e.g., super cheap PSP library), or partner with Occulus Rift. :p

I  the product though. It's difficult to convey the feeling of carrying all your favorite games and media around.

I agree ! It will generate more awareness. When they finally bought into the concept and try to evaluate their purchase, gamers may then realize that Vita Gaikai works better than straight tablets.

the fanboyism here is quite sad  and i didn't expect that to happen here on B3D... i don't know why people automatically assume that xbox 720 is just a casual machine..i don't see why there can't be both casual and core gaming..

Fret not. Microsoft is not stupid. They are probably planning their coming out party as we speak. It should be huge enough to blow all the pessimism away.

The quality of posts in this thread is also a self-fulfilling prophecy. The mods gave this thread a sh*tty title, which basically opens the flood gate to low quality posts. We can't really blame people for not following the thread/topic if the title reads "Orbis fanbois vs Durango fanbois. Who's better ?" or "Garbage Pile".

PS4 controls should map well to Vita. Console style controls on a touch screen are pretty much impossible. It's remote play, not remote view.

Not possible to do both.

Enthusiast gamers want powerful high end hardware.

Casuals gamers want a low priced machine.

Somebody will get alienated in the end.

Granted the hardcore fans will be there either way.

Seems like at the moment gaming enthusiasts feel like they are the ones that will be alienated by Microsoft.

Only possibility is that you take a two device approach, which most people do not think it is possible.

I personally think there are two devices coming. Question is where does the 'durango' fall. the weak console or the high end console.

Are metaphors to compare consoles on topic?
There's a funny comparison with food that I don't remember where I read it, it was about books but I'll apply the same to consoles.

Caviar: PS4
Steak: 720
Popcorn: WiiU
Celery: SmartPhone

Isn't the PS3 suppose to be a nice steak dinner?
And 360 is a hamburger?

Unless you're trying to say the next xbox will finally match PS3's performance. :p

What's the use of remote play working on smartphones and tablets when they don't have physical controls.

It's not a casual machine, it's just that MS no longer has catering to the core gamer as its number 1 priority - just look at what bkilian says why he left MS.

Yep, right now it is up to Microsoft to show the core that they still care, Sony have hit a homerun with most core gamers.
The pressure is on MS and if they come out showing kinect 2.0 as their selling point *oh boy* there is going to be a huge shitstorm.

I sincerely hope that Microsoft have beefed up the console since it's last leaked specs, because if they come out with 8gb ddr3 + 1.2tf gpu, always online, no used games, subscription required to play online multiplayer and at the same price as the PS4....

Why do people care that Durango uses DDR3?

With only 2/3 of the TMUs, 1/2 of the ROPs and pool of fast, low latency embedded ram Durango could find itself less BW constrained than Orbis.

720 will be competitive one way or another...i dont think we are going to see any suprises with hardware...maybe a small clock bump..if yeilds and tdp allow...maybe we might get suprised with some 6t sram...perhaps they might have done a deal with some bespoke ddr3 like sony obviously have with gddr5....
Regardless 720 wont win out right performance...instead it looks to compete on price and feature set.....looking forward to getting both ;)

No point in trying to compete in terms of graphics anymore, as the return for increased processing power is just too minimal to notice.

The real competition between Sony and MS will be: Whom are we gonna waste their least time?

I don't think MS will succeed my making gimmicky games tailored around their gimmicky living room hardware, and neither do I think Sony is gonna win gamer's hearts by making more movies running in realtime.

Both have to change strategy or they will perish soon in the face of PC, Steambox and mobile gaming.

If MS are going to bump any clocks it should be on the CPU rather than the GPU. They should try to keep frame rate parity despite the resources they're reserving for OS + apps. Standard Jaguar is good to at least 1.8 gHz, and Bobcat can overclock to well above 2 gHz (I've seen one at 2.5 gHz) just using cheap ass mini itx mobos if you're no longer bothered about maintaining mobile TDPs. Hopefully MS have contingency planning for using more of Jaguars headroom if required.

you can't just overclock a cpu dude , come on don't you know this by now !

Besides the Durango isn't a jaguar cpu

I'd guess it's because, "well, it's slower to begin with so it won't matter" isn't exactly a sexy answer to the bandwidth question.
