Phil Spencer accepted the ALS ice bucket challenges, and nominated Yoshida, Fils-Aime and Gabe Newell.

Bobby Kotick from Activision, Notch (Minecraft creator) and CliffyB nominated him before.

Bill Gates also accepted the challenge, as you can see in this video.

I'd perma-ban you for that if
a) I was a mod and
b) You weren't.

Pointless is a work of genius.

MS has really been on the ball with OS updates.

Granted, I didnt care about any of the August updates (though I guess low battery warning is good). Pre-loads and the media player though, hold interest.

I'd probably get in the preview program, except last time I had a beta dash, I had a devil of a time getting my 360 repaired through official channels, since you cant use the normal repair system with a beta dash (I guess the first assumption then is it's a dash bug).

I'm not sure how a free day is going to work for games that take 3-7 hours to complete. I'd be skeptical of what "free" and "day" means.

Microsoft say listing of a new 24-hour free game unlock program was an error.

Eurogamer have updated their story on the 24 free play to show:

Eurogamer said:
UPDATE 22/8/14 9.30am Microsoft has claimed that its listing of a new 24-hour free game unlock program was an "error".

In a statement to Eurogamer, the company acknowledged the listing as genuine but described its public appearance as mistake.

"A promotional tile for 'Max: The Curse of Brotherhood' was posted briefly on the US dash in error yesterday," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We apologise for any inconvenience.

"We're constantly exploring different ways to offer more benefits to our Xbox Live Gold members and will keep them updated when special offers become available."

So it sounds like they may still negotiating this with publishers, or somebody just jumped the gun before the press release.

Bummer, but it sounds like it still might be coming.

Will be interesting to see if they make these "demos" mandatory or opt-in by the publisher. Mandatory demos was great for Arcade titles(at least for consumers). It probably sucked for developers/publishers since they had to do extra work to support it. Timed trial of the full game makes more sense then making a separate demo. With a trial they can withhold achievements & gamerscore until you've paid for it. This was done on XBLA. XBLIG supported 8 minute timed trials. I think that was probably fine for small titles but full priced games need more time. I could see them going with 15 minutes up to an hour, but any more & I think would be too much. Unless of course timed trials are only available to Gold subscribers then I would hope more time would be available. There are also other ways they could use Gamerscore and/or Rewards to allow users to gain more free demo time.

Oh yeah, the programme seems certain as the Microsoft statement describes the listing as "genuine" it was just the "public appearance" that was an error. So it's probably just some details that have yet to be finalised! :)

Didn't/doesn't one of the online solutions offer a 1 hour timed demo of all games?

Not currently on the Xbox One. Pre-DRM reversal the rumor was that the Family Sharing program was only going to be 15min-1hr demos, but Aaron Greenberg said there was no time limit.

Agreed. Hopefully we'll hear something in the next monthly preview.

Steam has been doing free game weekends for years now, like right now Borderlands 2 and Dishonored are free for the weekend. It hasn't been a problem there, so I figure consoles can follow suit without issue.

Those are pretty old games...heck wasn't Dishonorable a free with Gold or Plus recently?

In that case you're probably not hurting the games sales much because it's likely not selling much anyway, and what it does sell, at reduced prices (I think Dishonorable is like 20 bucks).

Yeah they are older but still, they give you multiple days to play them rather than just one day so its easy to complete any game over a weekend, plus on console as least I presume they force you to pay for psn/live to get access to such things whereas it's totally free on Steam. So if they can do 3 days for free on Steam they should be able to do 1 day with psn/live payment on console.

I believe the original point was giving 24 hours of access to a game that only takes 3 to 7 hours to complete doesn't make a lot of sense simply bc you could finish it before the complimentary access is over. Hence how do you effectively monetize a scenario like that?
