News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

I think there's an element of truth to them.

The original spec MS stuck to pretty solidly... and Durango is likely within the range they quoted (as is the CPU I think), with one notable exception.

In Dec 2011 there was the "reliable" pastebin leak. In terms of memory this would seem to put the consoles somewhere around these rough numbers:
Orbis 2GB RAM, 0.5-1GB O/S, 1-1.5GB for gaming.
Durango 4GB RAM, 2.5-3GB O/S?, 1-1.5GB for gaming.
Wii-U 2GB RAM, 0.5-1GB O/S, 1-1.5GB for gaming.

At some point after the leak (and probably after Nintendo had finalized the Wii-U) both Sony and MS decided to increase their memory size... it seems entirely possible this was at the request of 3rd party developers.

(personally, the more interesting part is what pastebin didn't say - what type of RAM was in Durango prior to the re-spec?)

It was probably DDR3; 4GB + ESRAM would work well and has continuity with 360's memory setup - it's unlikely they had 4GB GDDR5 in the kits and switched to 8GB and ESRAM.

Interestingly that Dec 11 pastebin also mentions Durango has 24/7 connectivity, ie. its an always on console like the Edge rumours.

How do you know what MS wanted? The leaked doc is just an old doc, we know (thanks to shockingAlberto in NeoGAF) that MS listened to EA, Activision, DICE, etc they want power.

Lol, so you trust shocking alberto from GAF over an official MS roadmap listing their goals for the console.
It's from 2010, when do you think MS started working on Durango...last year?

And even if shocking alberto is legit, Durango is a generational leap over 360.

I still find that rumor to be bogus because it makes no sense. I can understand how no used games would work but constantly requiring Internet would be a tall order no country could provide.

I take always on to mean a low power standby state where the system can receive commands. As of right now, the 360 has to be manually turned on to download a game demo queued from the Internet.

Some people said that the leaked doc is not a "technical doc", I'm not saying the leaked doc is "false" or something like this, what I mean is, from 2010 to 2012 some things can be changed.

EDIT: Kotaku' article: http://kotaku.com/5982986/we-know-all-about-the-next-xbox-from-someone-who-says-theyve-got-one

I guess the info is from SuperDaE.

Kinect being mandatory.
Neutral as of yet. I need to see if the new controllers take advantage of Kinect.

Mandatory installs?
Awesome. No more need to switch discs everytime I want to play a new game.

So far only always online sounds negative. We need to find out more about it.

So if true, just thumb and hand tracking, but not individual fingers?

It looks like wrist, hand, thumb and (essentially) index finger. More than sufficient to duplicate tablet controls, e.g. pinch to zoom, should handle RTSs.

The resolution has gone from 320x240 to 512x424. So probably not fingers in a reliable fashion.

The fun bit is that kinect2 appears to have night vision - at the same resolution as the depth camera (I assume there's a bandwidth reason for this?).

And obviously the number of players being tracked is the big technical upgrade - jumping from 2 to 6.

Where did you get that resolution?

Do you mean "night vision" for rgb image? because current Kinect can works on low light.

What I found interesting was that developers can't even directly access the Bluray disc. I do like that you'll be able to start playing once the disk is in & it will install in the background.

Not real happy about the wireless 360 controllers not being supported. Can understand if they're different like a touchscreen or LCD built-in, but if there isn't anything major different, then I'd rather just keep using my existing controllers.

Mandatory Kinect is fine by me. People turned off of it, just haven't really used it. I'm also not put off by mandatory Internet either. It's 2013, if you don't have Internet within range of your new top of line game system, then maybe gaming shouldn't be for you.

the resolution was in the document. As Kinect was only using near infrared, looks like Kinect2 supports full infrared. Will be interesting to know if it's for new functionality or just there due to change in different camera.

I find it funny that people are spooked behind the camera. Microsoft does give you options to turn off for privacy. BTW, might as well turn off the cell phone, your radio, or whatever else you have because big brother can always spy on you.

So superdae says the specs aren't right and people should wait for kotaku's next article, which confirms the specs are right. Guess he wants his month of fame really bad lol

The Kotaku article you linked to. :???: You haven't read it?!

Reading it now, my thoughts in order I have them:

Multiple games at the same time? Suggests streaming of games. Sounds disastrous in terms of hardware utilisation!

Install while playing is excellent. Wonder if PC will get that tech?

Kinect res is odd. Why is Kinect2's res proportionally less than V1's? I'd have though it'd be the same 1/4 res, 960 x 540. Active IR resolution is also odd. The IR pattern enables that. What's the value in low-res night-vision (assuming that's what it is)?

HDD installs good, but no BRD streaming as well?

Ah, multi-gaming isn't simultaneous but task switching, with an automatic state save between titles.

Xbox companion app - thought so. Easy way to add value and fancy controls without needing a fancy, expensive controller. Devs can assume it's ubiquitous as any in-the-box peripheral and target it accordingly.

Wifi and Audio are hitting the expected targets.

Real news here is Kinect detail. 1080p is fairly ambitious, but we need the framerate for that. I can only guess that the low resolution of the depth camera is due to it being a specialist camera, maybe highly sensitive to IR or something. Google throws up very little and nothing obviously IR camera related.

Oh, okay. Picture of a table. For you:

6 players tracked
25 joints per person (5 more than Kniect)
1080p colour camera
512 x 424 depth
Depth range 0.5 - 4.5 metres
412 x 424 Active IR resolution. No explanation of what that is exactly, but it lists the original Kinect as having no entry here, so it's something new to Kinect2.

Thanks... some patent talk about a 3 cameras (or sensors?), the RGB, the IR and another one. What if the depth data come from 2 sensors? and what if a 212x424 + 412x424 image is ok for tracking? interpolation or something like this.

I don't think any 360 fans will like that,HDD install on PS3 was one of the most hated and flamed features of the PS3 by 360 fans, even MS mock GTA4 installs on PS3.

But here's the thing. When we phone at least the not ignorant know their conversation will be recorded and analyzed by the NSA. We can disable cameras on lame SmartTVs any day. We can adjust to all that.

But how do you adjust to a device which sits 24h in your living room, always on, waiting for input and is able to record everything which is said or sees, transmit it to be analyzed for trigger words. I'm sure the positive spin is already prepared with an "anti break in/home security" app.

I have no real concern here about MS but this infrastructure is far too juicy to be ignored by the NSA. If you don't get nervous about the potential danger involved I'm really concerned how complacent we're all digging our own holes.
If I were you I'd start with a tinfoil hat.
