News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

?? Guy asks if the down clock rumor is true, he says its false, what's left to infer?

Seriously, nice try but he doesn't.

It would've been more believable if you had added the guys name to the "quote" where major nelson said it's false, as it is, the guy asked after he posted that message and there has been no reply.

This while share games with family members sounds way better than it is. Here is the quote:

"Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games.* Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you."

Note the 'inside your home' part. All this means, I think, is that if you have 2 Xbox Ones in your home, you can share a game. This feature is only handy is you have more than 1 Xbox One in your home. Having said that, I think it's fucking insulting that Microsoft sees it as a feature that a guest in my home can play games on my Xbox One for free. Or anyone else for that matter. How stupid does MS think I am?

Good point - it did seem far too good to be true.

And you have to remember this is the company who gives Gold members 20 MS points on their birthdays...and announces it like this:

"Congratulations! This month you'll be a year wiser. But what's a birthday without a sweet surprise? Try this: Enjoy 20 Microsoft Points as our gift to you.

After four years you'd have enough points to buy a f**king avatar hat.

I believe MN, he NEVERS and i mean NEVER reports on anything the fact that he shot this down means that it's false. besides thuway and bruceleeroy both have a sony agenda.

What did he shoot down as false? The esram issue? What is that?

You will have to teach me how to do that, because I am in the same situation as you. I'd be eternally grateful.

The console is aimed at casual and core audience, but for casual, the simpler, the better...

If you have a modern (read: android, ios or windows phone) phone, barring any restriction from your mobile service provider, you can share your phone's internet with your devices through wifi tethering. Android and iOS have 5 device limit, Windows Phone 8 has 8 device limit, but on most Android phones you can share through wifi, bluetooth and usb passthrough, while its strictly through wifi for WP8. That's what I am using and its great.

He'll hardly admit them will he?? Admitting to such a thing at this point in time will be commercial suicide for the console and will drive a lot of tech heads towards PS4.
No, then his response would have been the standard "We don't comment on rumors". The fact that he did not break out the standard response is quite telling.

As to CBOAT, from his previous posts, he's an industry insider, probably at EA. I call bull on him knowing anything about XB1 yields. Yield info would not even have been widely shared in the xbox org, someone from outside it would not be hearing anything about it. Heck, I was working on a low level hardware component, and I would not even be able to tell you the process of that component, never mind the yields.

if you have an android phone get an app called pda net. that's it. you dont need a tethering plan, it will set your phone up as a wifi hotspot. phone does not need to be rooted.

it's 7 bucks for the pay version (worth it anyway imo) but the free limited version would seem to work ok for this check in.

i wont be disingenuous and say joe (or jane) six pack really knows how to do this though.
Many many thanks Rangers. My phone isn't android but there should be an equivalent so no problem. I am really grateful. I am going to save your text for future reference and help, just in case.

I am so not looking forward to using this system if I can help it, but it's always a good thing to know.

Cheers.

I hope game journalists man up and ask Microsoft why their policies are the way they are. Why am I only allowed to lend a game to a friend of mine for 30 days? Why can I only play offline for up to 24 hours before the console needs to reconnect? And most importantly, why can't I privately sell my own damn game? Why through "selected retailers".

I admit that I'm a cheap ass gamer and from the 18 games I own, probably 15 are bought used. All the others I bought in store and I've played lots of other games I borrowed from friends.

I'm not liking this. Especially the 24 hour check in. Usually when my ISP craps out and I have no internet, I pass time by gaming. What if the X1 won't allow me to play anymore because I have been playiing offlike for too long? I guess I could connect the X1 to my phone through WiFi tethering to reset the clock.. but damn I'm not comfortable with all these restrictions.

Q: I hope game journalists man up and ask Microsoft why their policies are the way they are.

A: Their activation system became a requirement as soon as they decided to support disc-less play and to require all games to be installed with no access to the optical media outside of install.

Q: Why am I only allowed to lend a game to a friend of mine for 30 days?

A: You're not lending it to them for 30 days. You're giving it to them, and they have to have been on your friends list for 30 days prior to transfer. This is likely to avoid rampant game sharing, although it does specifically call out "allowing publishers" to enable you to give your disc based games specifically.

Q. Why can I only play offline for up to 24 hours before the console needs to reconnect?

A. As a verification method to ensure a valid license for the games you've installed off of disc. Otherwise you could buy a game, install it, then immediately trade the game in and keep your console offline until you're done with it. This forces an online check to ensure your license is still valid and that a "participating retailer" hasn't de-activated it.

Q. And most importantly, why can't I privately sell my own damn game? Why through "selected retailers".

A. Because only select retailers will have the framework in place to de-activate your used game that is probably still installed on your XBO. Allowing user to user sells would require some sort of user to user accessible transaction system that protects both the buyer and the seller along with processing the financial transaction. Instead, they've done an entirely trust based "gifting" system with no built-in support for a financial transaction. You definitely won't be eBaying your used XBO games with that method (no way would the buyer trust you or go through with the 30 day wait).

S. I admit that I'm a cheap ass gamer and from the 18 games I own, probably 15 are bought used. All the others I bought in store and I've played lots of other games I borrowed from friends.

R. "All the others"? All 3 of them? You probably just answered your own questions ya cheap bastard. (j/k)

S. I'm not liking this. Especially the 24 hour check in. Usually when my ISP craps out and I have no internet, I pass time by gaming. What if the X1 won't allow me to play anymore because I have been playiing offlike for too long?

R. "Please understand." Seriously though, that's something that you, as the potential buyer, will have to take into consideration. They're under no obligation to take all use cases into account (no matter how likely they are) and you're under no obligation to buy their product that does not take your use case into account.

Under the "news, not rumors" section, Major Nelson just posted this hot across the twitter wire 1 minute ago:

http://majornelson.com/2013/06/06/details-on-xbox-one-connectivity-licensing-and-privacy-features/
Holy crap. It's as bad as it could possibly be.

Previously he said "We're fully aware of what is going on. I am also working on a few things to address it. I can't say much more right now. But we ARE listening,"

We misunderstood what he meant. I think what he meant by that was, "shut up, and f^&* you".

@Cyan - they have stated that rare special use codes will exist to allow a console to be offline - think military. Have not seen any more details about it, but apparently they have worked it out.

Overall I like some of the features, though I am curious if family members can play simultaneously. I had to buy doubles and triples in my house so I really would love it if it was tied to the router mac address or something.

Thanks again. The info Rangers gave me and the correlational info you provided me with -along with a PM, he he- should be enough to get me going in the fascinating world of the new generation of consoles.

I am going to copy & paste the text from your posts to a text file and upload it to my Skydrive, you never know....

The process seems to be easy though. Not fully what I expected but they aren't going to require a seamless communication (permanent online connection).

Cheers

Cyan, what OS does your phone have?

To be honest I can only speak to Android, and I dont know if PDA Net is available on any others (it probably isn't), or if they have anything similar.

Lol thanks for the writeup Gradthrawn. I agree I'm a cheapass but hey, that's the student life :(

You are precisely the customer they don't want. :???:

Never had a problem with my purchase policies previous generations. I simply refuse to pay top euro for a game that won't last me long. And I have been a good customer for them because the games I did buy in store are Halo 3, Halo 4 Limited, Gears of War 2, Battlefield 3, Alan Wake Limited Edition and Ninja Gaiden 2. 5/6 published by Microsoft

I need an edit button on my phone app!

If the console is always connected it should check-in for you while you were sleeping. So my guess is if you wake up and your ISP goes down while playing it should not matter as the check-in was already completed. Wish it could be more like a music pass - 30-days per device. However I can see the abuse with that, rent a disc for a day and play all month, etc.

I know why they have done all of this, and possibly overall it is the best of the compromises.

Press should ask this: Will we see a future update that will allow a console to stay offline and play games as long as the disc is in the tray at all times?

So, game rentals a no go at launch at the least and who knows what happens after that. Limited loan to friends, unlimited use in my own household. Color me not impressed. I'm stunned enough that I am not even sure what to say at this point. Here's to hoping for a short and failed generation, I'm off to drink. Heavily.

Not my case though, but it opens up the possibility of keeping the console alive once it is fully replaced by a new one in less than a dedade.

Everything, everything bkilian said starts to make sense now. He pieced the puzzle together at his own pace and it's more or less what we expected. My hats off to him for such honesty.

I'm dreading the process of these changes.

There aren't major changes in the used market and stuff. Which isn't bad.

Plus, since the abuse people have incurred over the years with the 2nd hand market in some ways -online passes, etc- it just made the thought of possible new policies and fees that much worse.

Not totally bad news in that sense at least.

How nice of you to completely ignore the next quote. Note the "ANYTIME, ANYWHERE" part. Please try to be a bit more rational and less trollworthy in your future posts. Source: http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/license

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Good point - it did seem far too good to be true.

No. Not a good point at all as he blindly ignores the very next quote.

It is a rather mediocre Blackberry almost nobody uses nowadays. I switched the SO myself but I messed up the firmware of my phone provider -which was really bad- to the point that I am about to "purchase" a new Nokia soon. I'd be happy to do away with it.
