Motorstorm: Apocalypse

Amazing race ! They'd gone to town with destructions.

Might as well get military vehicles into the game and have them take out the players.

Hope to see the effects in 3D.

That looks fantastic. There aren't many game series that I've bought three versions of, but Motorstorm looks set to be one of that select group (second only after the Gran Turismo series). And however impressive GT5 looks at times, Motorstorm, particularly after the 2nd one, just looks more impressive graphically than almost anything else thanks to the smoke, light, physics, effects, etc. It's not a fair comparison, but still, no racing game is quite like it. I'm glad to see that the city environment still allows for a good deal of variety, as that's the thing I would not want to lose from Pacific Rift.

yes!! bring it on! please!! cannot wait...looks like a great evolution in the series - it looks like a playable blockbuster movie!!
I know right? It's like they took what Uncharted 2 did with the crazy disasters, and added it to MotorStorm's already crazy racing style.

It looks like the devs are going crazy with this one ! Good I saved my money for a racer uptill now. This kind of chaos and split screen means win win for my family. These days my family have opened up so much towards my ps3 , something that just never hapened before. PS MOve did the trick for them and it got sealed by KungFu Live. Now I think the ps3 is permanently in the living room now, rather than being in my bedroom. I think this chaotic split screen racer would be a perfect fit for a fun and laughter filled family evening(*That is if the y stop playing Kungfu first  !)

Something I noticed, the suburban track looks pretty "Toony" in this vid. Looks like all the destruction means graphical budgets for the tracks has to come down. But on the other hand the Skyline track seems like overflowing with stuff and still looks great. Maybe its just that the suburban track isn't ready yet.

Hmmm while I really liked what they did with Motorstorm 1, I don't think I like the direction in these videos. It seems like they are trying to follow Split/Second but don't quite have that theme down.

I know Split/Second had some criticisms, but the racing model felt very good. Cars felt different and had benefits/draw backs. It was very forgiving, but driving well (especially online) separated the boys from men. And the course altering power plays and detonators really made it a grown up "kart" game without the silly glowing boxes. Thematically it was great (reality TV). So while there were limited courses, rubberband AI (works well in the game), had to play SP to get all cars (a good thing imo to master the nuances of the maps and drifting), etc the game was very cohesive. Most of all it was fun and worked well in split screen.

The above videos just don't seem to have the same cohesive, balanced experience. Maybe I am enjoying S/S too much, and wanted MS to go more the route of #1 and enhance that core experience, but the videos look from my perspective to fall very much short of what Blackrock Studios did with S/S.

You're discussing the game as if you never tried Motorstorm 2? (Really awesome game)

Motorstorms driving model to me felt much better than Split Seconds and same about the physics. Even the variety of the graphics and environments and time of day settings are much better. Heck, I even prefer the much more open track layouts of MS2.

This Split/Second ?

The destruction theme looks similar, but MotorStorm series has multiple vehicle types to play in the same race (e.g., bikes vs trucks). They handle differently. In MS, you also have boost and the regular accelerator to play with. In MS2, the environment plays a part in the racing (water slows you down, but cools your vehicle to prevent overheating; fire heats you up). In MS3, I saw some fire but it looks like they added assorted debris, plus the large scale hazards. The track designs in MotorStorm games seem more rugged and open, sometimes it's not so obvious which way to go (plus you'll find ample places to jump).

The rubberband racing and driving mechanics -- if they keep it the same as MS1 & 2 -- are fun.

The reason I'm not so hot on MotorStorm 3 is I don't like to race in loops usually (I  MS1 and MS2 for edgy racing with friends). I like Modnation Racer's mods, and GT5's variety even more. I have to try MS's driving again to see if it offer something different *enough* from GT5.

New Motorstorm trailer - But I recommend to download it from PSN.
http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/new-motorstorm-apocalypse-trailer

There's something odd about some part of trailers in terms of FPS, there are normal slowdowns, and 'slowdowns with speed ups', really strange, there wasnt anything like that on earlier videos.

But one thing really stands out in this trailer, its Image Quality. If anyone isnt still convinced to Sony's MLAA implementation, he should check this trailer. Its racing game in destroyed city, so there are many sub-pixel geometry, but not so much shader aliasing and MLAA really does it job.

i think it was 60fps too

no, not 60. Ridge Racer did 1080p/60 though. But for a new console, that is known to be hard to developer for, this former Sega team great job....besides the fire effects of course. :D

there were alot of early launch PS3 games that were 1080p. It seems that it could've continued, but there was no incentive behind it. I mean with Sony's own studios settling for 720p, why should 3rd Parties do any different.

but with Motorstorm now rendering at 1080p for the first time, more Sony games might try to hit that figure as well, if they want 720p in 3D mode.

edit- I always wondered what engine Full Auto 2 ran on....as well as another Sega game, Iron Man. Although Iron Man was developed by Secret Level, it also had realistic Lighting. I wonder if these were two different engines, or if there is an in-house engine Sega provides for developers.

It also looks like they conciously try to avoid the cases where MLAA brakes, every object even camera is slightly leaning to some direction to avoid perfectly vertical/horizontal edges.

I wonder if in game which has very symmetric vertical/horizontal edges, it would be feasible to actually render everything with slightly rotated camera and then during post-processing fix it to get nice aa quality.

What?! MS3 looks that good and it's going to be 1080p?! Is it still going to be 4 player splitscreen?

yeah Pacific Rift (MS2) had 4player splitscreen and it looked great and ran smooth.

MS3 is going to have-

Sixteen player online multiplayer.
Four player split-screen.
Combination of the two. Play with three friends in the living room against 12 more online.

:D
