Microsoft XBOX (XBox One X / Project Scorpio) - Prerelease News and Rumours

good morning all, good to see everyone is up and bristling with energy the usual for pre-console reveal.
I like the comments of not jag but not zen. It does feel like it makes the most sense to land somewhere in-between.
Any rules for posting on this thread until the news is complete? all scorpio news in here? or other?

edit: and if we do technical articles, should go into the technical console forum?

2.3GHz Jaguar CPU in Q4 2017 sounds very... not good, I was even hoping for a higher clock than 2.3GHz if that was the case... I mean you look at Ryzen, it's probably like 60%+ better IPC and 60% higher clock; still; it will be interesting to see how much their customized part of it affects overall perf against the other consoles and PC ports.

I was also hoping for improved XB1 and 360 BC games performance, but with this CPU bump it limits expectations a bit,

still, very respectable overall the GPU/Ram specs, specially if they can price it well against PS4 Pro,

Sounds like misterxmedia, is it him?

Looks like the last few years in school has resulted in a slight better written piece of crackpot secret sauce fan fiction.

Perhaps price is exactly why they went with what they did, better compatibility with existing software was a nice bonus.

It will be interesting to see how the command processor Dx12 graphics hardware embedding affect the performance of the CPU if they are offloading even more work from it and making other tweaks and improvements.

I just hope that they did not spend too much time looking back at how Xbox one performs and focusing on fixing issues and not enough at looking at the forward GPU landscape delivering new possibilities.

Sony at least with the current information releases have adopted far more forward looking features.

the cpu customizations sounds very interesting with the up clock also.
can't really say that the 4pro gpu upgrades are more forward looking as we don't know what upgrades are made to scorpios, as they mention that it has checkerboard support added, which is one of the 2 big headline updates, the other being RPM which we don't know if it has, or more, or if it's vega based even

The range of internet reactions is "this thing is only slightly more powerful than PS4 Pro" to "this thing will probably be way too expensive"

This is a solid upgrade to Xbox One which will please those who liked Xbox One but wanted it to be more powerful. It looks like a design with a clear budget. For those people arguing DF's involvement in the reveal wasn't unusual:

DF said:
As specs reveals go, this one is unprecedented: it's a first in terms of early access to key system architects, and one of a kind in terms of timing.

I look forward to E3 and seeing what the box can do and to see how Microsoft will tread that careful line of trying to make it appeal whilst not alienating the Xbox customer base it will most likely appeal the most too. Plus..the price!

The promised upgrade. 6TF and Jaguar based (people thinking they were going to put Zen were dilusional). Now, DF states it will be more expensive than PS4Pro.I've yet to see a console that is succesful with a pricetag over 500$. Sony learned this the hardway.

Edit: PS4Pro is 399 not 499. So it could be under 500$. My bad.

disappointed by the cpu. Just reinforces my opinion to invest more into my pc at this point. Ryzen 1700 and vega would be a better investment than any of the current systems
the cpu is fine by me, 'cos of dedicated audio processor and command processor silicon, but I was so hyped... That hardware on a PC is really fine, so I there is me hoping the green and blue lines of the SoC mean something..

Is it possible that the price is $399? Although it has 4GB more RAM than PS4 Pro, but the SOC should be cheaper because 16nm process is not that expensive as 2016.

The very high clock makes the SoC surprisingly small, so it could be much less expensive than most of us expected, OTOH that clock will impact yield and PSU/cooling cost so I don't know... This is reminiscent of the RX480 unveiling, small die, high clock, high power. And here there's also Crazy Caps(tm) to help yield at higher clock. Maybe.

I previously guessed over $100 price premium on the BOM, but this small die changes this quite a bit. Maybe $60 difference which MS could easily absorb if they are serious about offering more value for the same price. But the BOM difference is there to stay, if one saves money because of component price drops, the other will too.

Ha! I called the high clocking from the caps... Science!
good call, I think i would be happier with my predictions if I dialled it back to Jag + Polaris.

I think I put a little too much faith that the VM overhead was capable of navigating through different architectures like PC. It's apparent that may not be true.

7B transistors, 360sqmm die like with the XB1 though 16nm, more Memory, a more sophisticated cooling system and UHD Bluray/1TB. I expect 449-499USD.

yeah..."the extra year" things seems a little more perplexing now. As it's really only 4 more CU's on the chip compared to PS4 Pro. So the extra work/time must have been on Microsoft's end to power/cool this thing properly.

You'd thinik that would result in a SoC that wouldn't be that much different in cost compared to PS4 Pro. Of course there is the 4GB of extra memory but how much would that cost?

The much higher clock would impacts yield. So it's possible that clock wasn't giving reasonable volume until the process matures a bit more. Or they had a target voltage for power consumption, which again required the process to mature.

also if they did add any small tweaks to the cpu / gpu it could have taken longer to make
