What if the network computing ('cloud' as a term really bugs me; it's not a fluffy, environmentally friendly cloud, but a massive, energy guzzling server farm!) is used for MS exclusives as a console differentiator? Sure, you get the same games as the other console that aren't any different, but look at these awesome exclusives only possible on XB1 with the added power of Water Vapour! Fable taken to the next level with 'living' worlds beyond local computing. It'd be expensive, but MS could see it as a way to mop of free Azure cycles and promote the platform. A showcase of good uses could also precede enabling software on other platforms to use it, and MS get paid for Sony's games. If eventually we're looking at an end to consoles, taking that first step now might not be a bad idea. So maybe it shouldn't be evaluated as an unlikely resource for all devs to use, but as a differentiator for MS's first party which, at the end of the day, is the major difference between these games machines.

Meh, none of this is a differentiator though, Amazon offers similar capabilities as Azure, for a similar price.

MS can go ahead and try and pretend it makes their 1st party titles special, but I'm guessing gamers will see through that pretty fast.

This is nothing more than using a trendy buzzword to avoid any direct performance comparisons. Spade as a spade.

Amazon isn't making a games console, but yea i happen to think your right, cloud computing won't help games all that much, of course I hope they prove us wrong are E3 ;>

Hi all I have a question about the cloud computing.

Will it be possible to have a sort of hybrid game on the XBOne where by the game would have resources and environment like levels or more advanced graphics and visual flair that can be mixed into the core game?

What I'm asking is would it be possible to have game be streamed like OnLive or Genki did but have the local game blend with the higher res graphics?

So in theory the XBOne is in minimum settings and when a connection to the cloud is established both games sync up and blend the improved visuals to the players screen.

Yeah I want to hear about which Xbone games are using the cloud and what the cloud is adding to those games that other versions (PS4, PC, iOS, etc.) don't have.

I get the sense that this cloud talk is a strategy to deflect from talk about specs comparisons.

Remember procedural textures generation? That was their answer to more limited storage capacity of DVD vs. Blu Ray. Was that really used?

Or how XNA would make games development fast but XNA is gone now, right?

Or how XBL multiplayer games would have spectator mode, so people could watch other skilled players in real time. That didn't materialize either, AFAIK.

I think people are going to want more concrete info. than buzzwords.

I hope I didn't sound this negative in 2006 when Sony told me my PS3 was going to harness the power of cell processors in all my appliances! :p

Even if it's Halo I am not sure all people are going to embrace the cloud because of Halo alone. If there an exclusive game which can show the potential of Azure then it could be Halo.

But Xbox Live isn't reliable as it is. Today for instance, a friend of mine sent me like 10 messages on Xbox Live.

The console didn't warn me about the last 4 messages she sent to me, so I thought she had left XBL without saying goodbye or replying to a msg I had sent her, but she did.

I was about to switch off the console when I went to xbox.com on my PC to say goodbye. And then I realized I had 4 messages there, but not on XBL. :???:

If I knew I'd write back after each message of hers. She had left XBL probably thinking I was ignoring her, which wasn't the case.

I was just playing Skyrim and I didn't get her messages for some reason.

Also the additional content in Halo 4 wasn't well received by many people just because it required an internet connection to work for no apparent reason nor actual benefit.

More news:

There is a certain rumour emerging from some sources that Rare is planning to release a game related to an old Rare's franchise.

And that game is... Wizards & Warriors!!!!!!! ( thanks link and Slash  )

Game world wise, they could stream the mother of all Megatextures out of the cloud for massively distinct and detailed areas. No more game media or HDD limitations. And then hand over world building (and destroying) abilities to the players... so Minecraft on the finest steroids basically.

About what I would expect.
I think for what the presentation was it was about as good as expected. It was also pretty much what I expected they would do, in focussing on the experience rather than game titles.
The mainstream press response is far more interesting to me than the specialist press.

But IMO it all comes down to E3 and the games, no one will remember the negative reaction to the unveil if MS has a stronger E3.
Look at it this way, at E3 MS goes first, they get to show all there first party titles, plus the first view of most of the key 3rd party stuff.
Sony has already shown several 1st party titles, they certainly will show more of those titles, and possibly some titles we have yet to see, but that doesn't have the same Wow factor, they'll probably show many of the same 3rd party titles but will they have improved visuals and will they be obvious?

There is still the who has the best games on the show floor which will also factor into it.

I also think going in with all the negative press could work in their favor, setting low expectations that they can easily exceed.....

I work for Somy and at some level I hope they've gone completely off the reservation, and Sony is the clear leader as the machines are released this fall. But I'm not naive enough to make that assumption after the event on Tuesday.

Good read, but I'm doubtful about the embedded RAM bit, and have some reservations about the cloud bit. Otherwise, it's pretty much in line with what I've been thinking and writing on this forum. I guess that's confirmation bias, but whatever.

Oh, and I think the title is wrong. I don't know about jealous, so much as bitter and entitled ;)

right on queue:

Say what you want about MS but they do seem to understand PR and getting their message out there. My guess we'll see a trickle of these sorts of articles from consumer electronic blogs and gaming journalist up until release. I doubt any other platform could get away with it....

Wasn't that an always online direction, that seems to have changed?

Nope, I think it was more than just that, for example thuway was quoting him on GAF:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=56455616#post56455616

There is a famous poster on Beyond3D named Bkilian. He was the audio engineer on Durango, and he is one of the biggest sources for all of this information. He no longer works at Microsoft, but during a private message session with a particular GAF member, he mentioned that he is frustrated that "the suits began caring only about profit". On his way out he was terribly frustrated with the design and goals of the machine. Karak eat your heart out.

And I'm guessing you've seen his 'MBA's with $ signs in their eyes' post before?

And let's not forget this is the company that thought it was a good idea to give Gold members 20 fucking MS points for our birthdays.
20 points! How incredibly insulting - you can't even buy a bloody Avatar hat for that!
That really illustrated the patronising attitude they have to core gamers these days.

I've had MUCH more free points than that from the Xbox Live Rewards program. I was actually pleasantly surprised they even gave out points just for birthdays. If you're not part of the FREE to join Rewards program...you have no business complaining and whining about 20 free points for your birthday.;)

bitter and entitled?

Sounds like a fanboy apologising for MS.

If bkilian of all people wasn't happy with the direction his division was forced to go down by management, why should we be?
Hey, don't bring me into it. Not being happy with management was only one small part of why I left, and that was mostly about always connected and how they seemed to be completely blind to any criticism of the idea. And how HDMI in was going to magically control your whole entertainment system (Looks like they caught on and are now using IR Blasting, which is notoriously unreliable). And how they wanted you to put the box between your receiver and your TV, despite the fact that would be an unworkable setup audio wise.

I loved working in the team. The kind of stuff we did with Kinect was hardcore computer science awesomeness, and seeing the theory turn into reality was amazing. The people in the trenches building this product are some of the best I've ever worked with. I would work with any one of them again, in a heartbeat. The new Kinect is even more amazing, and if it even meets half it's potential, gaming will not be the same.
