This announcement certainly doesn’t change any of our plans. We’ve blasted out of the gate with the greatest launch in the history of video games and we’re keeping our eyes squarely fixed on today and on the Xbox 360 road ahead, including continuous new content and programming through our premier Xbox Live online gaming service, the delivery of 80 high definition games and shipping between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by June.

Microsoft has been good about donig there own thing(sometimes at their own expense) and not responding to the competition instead they are doing what they think is best and not really worrying about the competition. Like I've said b4 Xbox isn't a make a break deal for microsoft they don't really need to "make" money off of it it's just living room realistate for them.

I dont even know why to respond to what Sony said, for MS future is now. They are delivering what they promised: next-gen gaming.

Most likely because someone immediately ran to them and asked them to say something, and rather than appear to duck they trotted out ye olde boilerplate.

Maybe someone should tell MS it's how many you sell that counts. ;) Just kidding. I guess they are not too confident in the sell through rate though if they are using that wording. Playing it safe I guess.

February numbers are 150,000 sold in North America, nil for Japan, and what for Europe?

All Microsoft has to do, is ship that number and claim huge success.

What counts is revenue and profit. On both of those counts Microsoft has executed. The software sales attach rate is incredible, and most of the games are $60.

I don't see how anyone can claim profit this early in the game, especially when it's well known that Microsoft is billions in the hole with the original Xbox. What is MS profit so far for the Xbox 360, if excluding the original Xbox?

You're absolutely right--I hate how Sony is always using shipped instead of sold numbers. Wait, you weren't talking about Sony? Oh. My bad!

This should be fun. ....

Yeah, MS is finally reporting the same "shipped" numbers Sony has done for years.

3rd party publishers like Activision with Call of Duty 2 have to be turning a profit. Despite having a small user base, a lot of copies of games are being sold. I don't think MS is turning a profit yet, but they can't be losing more money than they did with X-Box 1. They're probably losing a lot less money this time around.

Microsoft has to be claiming some sort of a profit because Bill Gates recently added about $3 billion to his portfolio.

Xbox's Shane Kim talks more about the PS3 launch

http://www.oxm.co.uk/articles/features/role_playing_games/viva_piata_interview_-_shane_kim

OXM 360: You mentioned Sony – what are your thoughts on the announcement of the worldwide PS3 launch in November?
I think that it’s great that Sony realise how important Viva Piñata since they had to make their announcement on the same day as us! No, but seriously, I think it’s a good thing that they’re finally starting to reveal more. They’ve made a lot of promises and people want to know what’s happening with PS3. Even though it’s disappointing for people who were expecting PS3 this spring, it’s good that Sony is sharing more information. For us, it doesn’t change anything. We’ve had a very clear strategy for a long time now and we’re not going to change that. We’re not going to react to anything that they do. We know what we’re doing, we’ll be in full supply shortly, we’ve got great content on the way, and we’ve got fantastic third-party support. If Sony happens to stumble – and we know first-hand that there are a lot of challenges in a worldwide launch – then we’ll be in an incredibly strong position to take advantage.

OXM 360: Sony has never done a worldwide launch before. Do you think you forced their hand with the worldwide launch of Xbox 360?
I have a philosophy: Leaders don’t react. I don’t know what went into Sony’s minds. I think we’ll have to see what happens. They said they’ll launch worldwide? We’ll see if they can pull it off. It’s very challenging. It may be they did it because we did it and it may be because it’s what customers want. Hopefully it’s because it’s what customers want.

OXM 360: You’ll have had a year’s head start come November. Are you confident that you’ll have a huge and loyal installed base by then that could damage PS3’s sales?
I am confident that we’ll have a loyal and significant installed base. What I’m less confident about is that we’ll win. I think that’s the kind of call you can only make when the time is right. So we’re going to be maniacally focused on executing out long-term game plan. You can ask me in three or four years whether we’ve won. But I totally believe that people who have bought Xbox 360 and subscribed to Xbox Live are having a great experience and I think we’re going to get a lot of top spin momentum from that.

OXM 360: Sony will be looking to have a huge E3 with the unveiling of the console. Do you have anything planned to take that thunder away?
We’ll have real content, real games that people can go out and get their hands on. Similar to what we had last year. We didn’t want to go out there and show a bunch of rendered videos that wouldn’t necessarily reflect reality. Sony has created that expectation and we’ll have to see if they can deliver on it. For us it’s all about real content this year. We’ve got some great titles launching every week now so at E3 we’ll have some exciting announcements about games we’re working on, and games third-party developers are working on.

OXM 360: Is there a feeling within Microsoft that you need to announce something huge to blow Sony out of the water?
Not really. This may be hard to believe but we’re not really focused on what we do to Sony. We’ve got the game plan and we know what we want to do. Of course, there are strategic announcements in that game plan and if we’ve done it right they’ll have some impact on Sony. But we’re not sitting down and thinking, “okay, what’s the best way to hurt Sony? What’s the best way to hurt PS3?â€￾ We’ll do things our way, Sony will do it theirs, and the customers will decide.

Well this real content better be pretty damn exciting or they risk having their asses handed to them again this year. The only E3 Microsoft has gotten right so far is the Halo 2 trailer year, other then that they have dropped the ball.

the responce is wize, but there's not a lot to expect.
Ar least MS made an error, cut the base of ealy adopters in two...
Anyway I think most of the Xbox sell are Premium, but it's stupid harcore and early adopters want the HDD.
at least the core could have come later, with kid games or when the mass market interest for xbox grows.
Ms will continue to deliver game, we haven' see game footage on ps3 neither MS.
The pression is on SOny, they have pressure for investisor, a costy but superior hardware (at least to produce).
MS like everybody is waiting for E3.
Sony can't go cgi no more they need to show some great in game stuff, and some playable stuff for the sake of credibility.
As say in another topic, most of 2007 will cross plateform, Sony must deliver good dev tool for shw PS3 muscles not only in first party title.
Ms can do nothing on the sale of ths ps3 the first year, Sony need almost a year to feef his fan base and hardcoregamers.
They need games, they work on it, they know they'll not win but expand market share is MS option, we could say the same for bigN.
