If you think about it another option would be a strategy. Give them the so - so maybe even underwhelming level (remember it was a multiplayer aspect) on MTV then show PDZ full graphics glory at E3. Here's to hoping We will see at E3.
Not going to happen there is only a 2 week diffrence. At launch all the titles will look better than they are now .

Once again people are blowing things up. Everything shown is from dev kits that aren't finished with 5 months before launch and unlike sony and nintendo (and ms with the xbox ) this time ms choose to show us mostly actual game play

actually he wasn't - but that's jvd. Did you expect anything else?

heh should i go through most of the names knocking the x360 games and say the same ?

Really are you going to sit here and defend the japan version of tekkan 3 on the ps2 at launch ?

First of all, it's not Tekken 3. Secondly, bringing up a (rushed) PS2 game in this thread [that's only issue was the flickering] amusingly shows your utter desperation on current xbox360 footage.

Right . Proving a point shows desperation ? Nice one

Other titles

Clock work knights for the saturn looked only slightly better than the final genesis games .

The penquin racer on the dreamcast launch looked only slightly better (Basicly better filtering ) than diddy cong racing .

Almost any 32 bit era game looked almost as good as the godzilla game at launch

Its hard to compare the 3d systems to the 2d systems as its not so much looking better as changing the way things look . But there are other 2d games on the psone and saturn that only looked marginaly better than the genesis superness titles at launch.

Also these are all finished and launched games we are comparing , not games that have 5 months to go upon completion .

Don't believe me ? the ps2 vesrion in japan was a blurry mess .

The problem with the japanese Tekken Tag was the jaggies and flickering, not that it was a 'blurry mess'.

The japanese Tekken Tag should've looked like it did for the US release, and the only 'defending' of the japanese version is that anyone who actually played both Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag knows that the former did NOT look better than the latter. There isn't really anything to discuss on that matter. How impressive it was as a launch title is of course another discussion.

First of all, it's not Tekken 3.
I know hey, whats even more WTF is that jvd originally said it was Tekken 3 Tag.

Also, I don't think it was rushed. The arcade version was around for some time all they did for the ps2 version was improve the graphics without making alteration to the systems or changes to the fighting mechanics inorder to keep compatibility for tournament matches.

Maybe your refering to the arcade version of tekken tag, which had graphics exactly the same as tekken 3.

I have been VERY pro Xbox and Xbox 360. And as a thread going up after this will show I am entusiastic about the launch...

But I am knocking PDZ because it looks like garbage. It was the WORST game shown. Period  I just watched all the trailers at MTV and am just shocked MS would show PDZ.

It must be a joke... seriously, I really believe that. I cannot believe MS would do that.

That video footage of PDZ on MTV looked like a slightly improved version of Gunvalkyrie. I was incredibly disappointed.
Looks like Microsoft won't have a 'Must Have' killer app this holiday. And that's a bad thing if you're trying to jump out to a big lead.

you do know that launch is 5 months away don't you ? You do know that these are no finished dev kits .

I swear you are all smart (Well 90% of you ) but it seems like you forget things you should all know .

You should all know that this is unfinished games on unfishined hardware with 5 months to go. But you all run around screaming like this will be the final quality of the games .

The system seller will be madden if EA does a good job with madden I think the Xbox will be fine for this holiday season atleast.

was the ps2 rendering at a higher res and with fsaa ?
PS1/N64 -> DC/PS2 there was 2-4x jump in screen resolution and 2-4x jump in color resolution, along with increase in internal precision of the new rasterizers.
There was no real FSAA but those factors alone were a big jump in IQ - there's a reason why people were going gaga over PS2 techdemos - and they were an aliased, lowres mess(all of them, without exception) compared to modern PS2 games.

JVD can't you understand that no one is attacking the XB360 HW itself or the specs, but MS's botched event?

Almost everyone universally agrees that the game trailers you can download on the web look better than PDZ (Gears of War, PGR3, etc), and MS should have poured money into getting one of those games as the primary DEMO to show. Instead that showed PDZ which look terrible, and if you could the screen time, they showed more of Tiger Woods and Tony Hawk (both of which look like Xbox ports) and less Condemned/GoW/PG3.

Fact is, Microsoft fucked up. Their mega TV bonanza bombed and failed to impress. Your theory that first-gen demos always look worse than mature last-gen games is laughable. It does not excuse a POORLY EXECUTED press/infomercial.

That is the bottom line. MS tried to pump up Rare, one of their first party publishers, instead of putting their best foot forward. The game trailers online show that OBVIOUSLY better looking third party titles exist, and should have been used instead.

jvd,

Yes, I know there is 5 months left. But here is why we are skeptical. First, you cannot just change things overnight. I have never seen a game make a complete make over in 5 months. The PDZ footage was degrees of magnitude behind Condemned, Quake 4, Gears of War, GR3, and even CoD 2 in graphic quality. PDZ did not look in the same league in design, texturing, models, building/level architecture, effects, etc...

It looked very much like the N64 version... i.e. very low geometry worlds with low detail (e.g. a lot of tiling). The quality is just not there... it takes years to make a great engine and a great game. 5 months is just not enough time. If you consider the fact the last 3 months will be spent tweaking, balanancing, and optimizing the game, there just is not enough time to do a complete make over.

The next problem is PDZ is running at 20fps.

You have every right to your opinion, and I respect that. As you can see in my new post I think the Xbox 360 software is looking totally awesome. I am excited! But PDZ makes me cringe.

Btw, you are focusing on the HW stabalization/5 months span/first gen software angle. The other software is puts the smack down on other current games, so I have a question:

Do you think PDZ looks good (compared to current gen *and* when compared to the other titles like Gears of War, GR3, Condemned... I want to hear your thoughts on both), or are you optimistic it will get a LOT better in 5 months?

Xbox 360 is looking great... just a little dissappointed with PDZ.

Hell, Bilinear filtering and perspective correct textures on the PS2 alone was a HUGE improvement. In no way was any PSone game I'm aware of more impressive than the graphics shown in the original PS/2 techdemos.
