Last of Us [PS4]

I wonder what did they mean by higher resolution models? Is it more polygons or just higer res textures? I mean when you render at 1080p over 720p, isn't the model higher res by default? But man would love to see if the gameplay model reaches cutscene quality:).

More polygon and better texture. They will probably use PS3 cutscene model in gameplay.

ND's character workflow used to be since UC2 that they model and texture a very high res asset, then bake all the data onto a low poly one. So no real texture painting is done on the ingame model - this means they can relatively easily model a new, more detailed ingame model and bake textures at a higher resolution. Still somewhat time consuming, but much faster and easier than trying to uprez a PS3 asset.

Hope they don't alter the original design too much since it's pretty good as it is. I'm guessing on top of more polys and higher res textures we get better skin shaders and better character LOD too.

Hum, I think ND will/is porting the PS3 LoU/UC engine (framework, anyhow) over to the PS4 for the remastered edition. No doubt the material assets will be of higher quality, and the meshes more refined/detailed. However, I just don't see ND scrapping the previous engine quite yet, IMHO.

I think they stated once that the porting of their PS3 engine to a PS4 was relatively simple, because they had already heavily parallized (distribute tasks across SPUs, GPU and PPC CPU) their engine.

Of course, the PS4 engine for UC was already "done" when they started porting.

It's a good point. I should imagine they've been working on the hardware for quite some time now. The PS4 version is likely to be something quite special, which is just perfect for those of us that never got to play it.

Fidelity aside, it looks pretty much the same. And there's still shimmer. So it'll be a sharper, less shimmery, higher framerate LoU experience, but it's not a next-gen ND title or, if this vid is anything to by, won't be introducing anything new to the engine.

It's also an odd scene to use to demo the game; a distance shot without a lot of close up detail. I was looking at Joel and Ellie, the nearest detailed models in the foreground, but don't see much that stands out. I'd have thought something indoors would have been better, something to show off the new shading and lighting.

It's a bit spoilery too. Now everybody knows about the zombie giraffes :devilish:

It looks like a very clean upscaled video, but without lots of more details. Not what I was expecting...

The big G's cast some nice shadows over the grass as they move. But it's not quite what I was expecting. For new PS4 owners that have moved from the dark side it'll be quite an experience but, as someone who has played before, it's not looking like it's worth shelving the PS3 edition just yet.

Tessellated donut Joel with 50,000 beard strands fluttering in the wind with L'Oreal would be impressive.

There's zombie giraffes???????? How do I not know this??
I should probably clarify that survival horror terrifies me and when I get scared I just close my eyes and use my imagination instead :runaway:

Me either. I was expecting richly textured models, like threads in clothes. Accepting this is a cruddy YouTube encode but this isn't what I was expecting either. It looks wrong.

Apparently what I have seen uses some kind of post AA even stronger than on the PS3 game, with no supersampling (whether spatial or temporal).

That video really lacks clarity though: probably because of compression & stronger post AA & maybe additional "cinematic" blur filter to wrongly replace the now missing 30fps induced motion blur?

But I woud be very surprised if the final game looks like that.
