Last of Us [PS4]

So I thought I’d delve into the similarities between Children of Men and The Last of Us, it’ll mostly be contained within spoilers, so I’d recommend watching the film and playing the game (ideally in that order) before reading through this as it may spoil large sections of both.

It’s worth noting that after I made my initial post, I did a Google search for “The Last of Us Children of Men” and I’m not the first to make the connection, there are posts on another forum and in particular Kotaku mention the similarities between them (and The Road too) in their review.

I have to admit, I’m probably not massively far through the game, I’ve recent got to a section that includes smugglers, but already the similarities are too close to ignore.

SPOILERS AHEAD (I can't see how to add the tags to text - mods feel free to amend).

First observation when right towards the beginning:

TLOU: After the initial outbreak; you’re playing as a middle aged man (Joel), you’re in a city that’s run by the military. There are people being partitioned into cages or cells with military men with guns to the prisoners’ heads.
COM: The main character is a middle aged man (Theo) in a city that’s run by the military, it has people being partitioned off into cage like cells with military men with guns to the prisoners’ heads.

TLOU: There is immediately talk of a group of people that are against the military, known as Fireflys, these people fight the military and set off a bomb right near the beginning of the game that’s associated with that group. Joel gets a little hurt during the attack.
COM: There is immediately talk of a group of people that are against the military, known as Brotherhood of Fishes, these people fight the military and set off a bomb right near the beginning of the game that’s associated with that group. Theo gets a little hurt during the attack.

TLOU: The world has an infectious disease that brings down civilisation (children haven’t been born in ~18 years)
COM: The world has an infectious disease that brings down civilisation (turns people into zombie-like creatures)

TLOU: There’s a female character (Tess) that has a task for the leading man, they appear to be having some kind of relationship.
COM: There’s a female character (Julian) that has a task for the leading man, they appear to be having some kind of relationship.

TLOU: A new female character is introduced that is the leader of the Fireflys (Marlene), she gets hurt early in the game.
COM: Julian is the leader of the Brotherhood of Fishes, she get killed fairly near to the beginning of the film.

Note: I believe the characters of Tess and Marlene are both derived from Julian from Children of Men, as they both plays out elements of her character and story ark.

TLOU: There is a girl (Ellie) handed over from the rebellious group, Fireflys, that needs to be protected by the main character and brought a location. She is handed over by their female leader, Marlene.
COM: There is a girl (Kee) handed over from the rebellious group, Brotherhood of Fishes, that needs to be protected by the main character and brought a location. She is handed over by their female leader, Julian.

TLOU: It transpires that the girl has a special element about her that means she’s not subject to the same issues as the general populous. She is immune to the disease.
COM: It transpires that the girl has a special element about her that means she’s not subject to the same issues as the general populous. She is immune to the disease.

TLOU: The female lead and possible partner of the main character dies in an attack.
COM: The female lead and possible partner of the main character dies in an attack.

TLOU: There is a scene where some smugglers try and stop the characters’ car, a bus is thrown at it and hits the car.
COM: There is a scene where some smugglers try and stop the characters’ car, a bus is thrown at it, but it narrowly misses.

These are the items I can think of right now, I'm fairly sure there are other that I have forgotten about. I will add once I realise them or come across more from the game as I progress.

Also as a side note, The Road features a scene with a man on a table that has been half eaten, there is also a pile of shoes in the same building (gathered resources by the cannibals) . In TLOU there is also a scene with a man on a table right next to a pile of shoes (gathered resources). In the file of The Road this makes more thematic sense since the world is ruined and plant-life doesn’t grow – everything is dead. It makes less sense in the game since the world is overrun with plant-life and therefore vegetables and fruits must be easily grown.

Please do not use color tags in your posts. They made it impossible to read with a dark theme reader. I have removed all beginning color tags to make the list readable. I'll leave the removal of the end color tags unfinished and still there to point out how many you had in there.

I've no idea how I managed that - sorry. Hopefully better now.

It took me 18 hours for single player campaign on normal mode. Other thing is that I took my time and didn't hurry...

It tool me 24 hours on hard the first time I played it. I wasn't using the Listen mode either, so all fights felt more deliberate. It could have increased my playtime as I could not see through walls, but I guess 24 hours is what i usually heard from everyone around me too.

Don't ever do that....you will go thru a dull movie and lose the chance of enjoying it forever. Its all about playing it.

I don't have a PS4, and my playtime is so limited now that I can't justify a second console. Unless at some point I get a chance to borrow one, just isn't going to happen, unfortunately.

Then just wait...there's no point in watching a playthrough. It will just kill any chance of you ever experiencing it. Its not some god sent magic, but it will definitely make you remember it fondly forever. You still have the option of renting or buying an old ps3 maybe( which also means you can play journey which is equally unforgettable), or like you said, borrowing a ps4 from some friend. Wait and life will deliver the cookies !

TLOU PS4 seems to be the hardest game to come across in the entire PS4 library. Not that it is terribly hard... but there's so many stories of it being sold out all across the internet.

First day I tried to get it without pre-order it was sold out as well. Almost every GS store near me in NY or NJ was "low stock" and phoning around for most of those it mean they had no copies that weren't already reserved, at least in those first couple of days.

i like when joe angry said "The best ps4 game" is a remastered game...

glad to see TLOU selling so well. Hopefully it give ND more budget and freedom for their next new IP or TLOU2.

hopefuly the game shop will restock. there's no "official game" shop in Indonesia. they just parallel importers.

I've been looking at a lot of screenshots and the amount of stylism is annoying. I think the ps4 remake gave it a big graphics boost, but the non-realistic stylism makes it still look like an animation. Maybe a sequel will go for a realistic look.

I hope not, Imagine how boring games would be if every game went for the realistic look. There is a place for both styles but I like the more artsy look of the TLOU and Uncharted.

That's been ND's approach for all of last gen. Photorealism has issues if it's not 100% perfect. The stylised approach, where ND were aiming for a halfway graphic-novel-meets-Hollywood-blockbuster style, works extremely well for both gamers and the developers. I don't expect it to change. If anything I'd expect more devs to make the deliberate move away from photorealism which'll show up game weaknesses more readily than more CGI-like imagery.

i imagine the one that have realistic graphic AND heavily stylized will be kojima. His game usually looks both realistic (for the time) and silly.

as for ND, i have the same udnerstanding as Shifty. Their games works more to the "stylized" area and i like them. The way they exaggerate facial expression and body motion also looks nice.

Children of man ended up being very influential to games. i've heard more than one dev (not ND) outright siting it as an influence. A desiner of Infinity Ward was one in an interview about MW2 (how the fuck do I remember this?! hahah)

It's very understandable. When I saw the movie I also thought "Christ, games must be like this"

They have long and ellaboratly choreographed action scenes in a single take (which feels very third person game camerish) and the action is very fluid and well dicernable compared to most other movies (also a more gamey characterisitc) and as an extra, it blends out of and back into story very seamlessly. Its quite impressive really.

I've never seen a game that is better at "milking the hype" than TLOU...

That said I don't think the art direction needs to be less cartoony and more realistic...though some games do pull off the realistic look pretty well..like The Order.

This game looks amazing with bfi!

BFI ?

Got the game last saturday and indeed the PS4 remaster is a big upgrade in terms of graphics (mainly sharpness, framerate). I also like little tweaks like the click for the flashlight, which goes via the speaker in the DS4 controller.

Playing again is a little strange, I usually put games aside when they are completed, but you're quickly back into the atmosphere.

Oh I agree completely, it's one of those truly underrated films. The action is realistic and believable, it doesn’t involve one inhuman, practically unkillable person rampaging through it. Those two long shots that both last several minutes (I can think of the car scene and the building one) are just incredible and totally draw you in. It’s one of those rare cases of where the film is much better than the book, partly because the stories are almost completely different. Never does the main character pick up a gun despite them being available at several points.

But anyway, this game has been totally influenced by the film and I have no issues with it.

I’d personally love to see a game that has more implied violence rather than blatant. A game where you could go through the story without murdering a person! Whether or not it’s possible, I have no idea (didn’t Deus Ex try this?). Even in a game like TLOU, which is generally considered one of the formats finest – you still spend rather a lot of your time strangling or shot-gunning people. I do find it a bit jarring whenever I hear a “Jesus Joel!” from an almost unfazed child sidekick.

This is one of the reasons I love MGS. And MGS5 seems to do it spleandidly :)
