No he is probably right, solidifying your control over a large player base would be a sensible idea, their scatter shot plan may indeed pay off if it builds hype and stops people from purchasing the PS3, or in the short term the PS2, DS, PSP or perhaps someother expensive toy. The UK for example is likely going to be upset if the number of X360 complains keep up, we are used to pretty much perfect hardware, perfect games etc... first launch is nice however if its not up to the normal spec people will complain. I don't mind waiting normally, its nice to get a world wide release however the number of units truly is low, waiting another month and having a strong Christmas launch would likely have satisfied more people.
Traditionally you attempt to build a large user base in an area because there is no internet, players only really communicate in person so if only 4 people in your town have a console you aren't going to be having system linked games. However Live combats that to some extent.
The real question will be how will support be sustained up until Christamas and how early will PS3 launch, if Sony pull of a good marketing campagin MS not having a strong user base in any one area may kick them in the teeth, especailly if Sony can world Launch with a strong number of consoles (1.5,1,1.5 US, EU, JPN?).
