How well is psp doing?

PSP must be ~10million sales right now.
We have:
4M NA
2.8M Japan (or thereabouts)
800k UK
500k France
~1M+ more for Europe?
+Korea I'd guess 300k (on virtue it sold half that in the first two months in the slow season)
+Australia/NZ (GTA:LCS is very popular, it had the best launch ever for a console or handheld and goal was 500k by March) - 300k?
+Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. etc. those smaller regions.

So for how well its doing, I'd say great to fantastic. Not as well as the DS of course, but does it have to be? At double the cost w/o a free game, I think not.

They had shipped 10 million by October. Assuming the majority are being sold, another couple of months of more stock, including Christmas where they were expecting to sell 3 million in NA, doubling to 6 million owners, I'd guess PSP is at least 11 million by now. If we want to compare it to DS, how much of a headstart has DS had? On the ratio of sales to time on the market they seem very similar I think.

I agree.

there wasn't a huge head start anywhere but europe. it was 3 or 4 months in NA and about 2 weeks in japan.

i'm pretty doubtful that the psp has sold more than 10 million. NPD put the psp at 2.5M in NA going into november. at the same time sony stated it had shipped 4.47M units. going on the assumption that sony would sell through the 2 million extra units they had going into giftmas in NA, along with the excess they had in each of the other countries and sell another million on top of that is pretty hopefull, i would say. i didn't see any shortages of PSP's anywhere around me. in fact, there are a few shops still selling gigipacks*.

*a guy at ElBo told me they were a holiday only thing. ElBo was out, but a few stors in the mall still had them.

Well, you're looking at that NA wrong.
3-4months including a holiday season.
Japan...yeah...Sony screwed themselves royally by not having units out there for the launch and busy time of the year.

Well guess what, that was just for the US and now they've sold 3.63million. NA = 4million is a safe bet.

Why would they have to sell excess? They already shipped the units.

My breakdown above is solid. 10million is a lock. I even understated Europe a million+ units IMO.

so sony doubled it's installed base in most territories, then sold another million units on top of that in 2 months?

i still don't buy it.

if it happened we'd be reading a press release about it now. fastest selling handheld in history and all that. nintendo's had time to tally up it's numbers, why hasn't sony?

Because you aren't quite thinking properly.

US: 3.63million (DS: 3.8million)

NA: 4million (DS: 4million)

Japan: 2.8mil (DS 5.9mil)

Lets see if we're up to pace here....
We're at ~8.1mil.

Without over half of Europe (>1million if you're keeping track). Without Australia/NZ, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia.

Why doesn't Sony want to proclaim this from the heavens?
Surely it can't be because Nintendo have sold 13.5mil DS's and they proclaimed 10mil shipped 3 months ago and they don't want to look bad? Nah, they just haven't sold them - or even half, regardless of what sales trackers say-

look, all i'm saying is that as of novemner 1st sony said they shipped 10 million units worldwide. this was there holiday ramp-up. if you compare what they had actualy sold to what they had shipped, you'll see that the shipped numbers were almost double in the US and JPN. then compare it to the numbers you posted. sony shipped 4.47 million units to NA and sold 4** million. sony shipped 3 million units to JPN* and sold 2.8. sony shipped 2.53 million units to all of europe of which we've got numbers for 1.3 million. i'm saying that in most territories they didn't sell though the units they recieved at the end of october. to think they sold another million on top of the 10 million shipped is a bit hopeful.

*sony's corperate numbers lump all of asia under "japan".
**this came from your CES link. i've never known sony to state sold numbers, only shipped numbers, but we'll give you the benifit of the doubt.

I'm really impressed by the clarity of the screen but hate the ghosting.
Just a quick note to say that the ghosting only seems to happen on my PSP after not playing it for a bit, when ambient temps are low. If it's cold, the screen mostly sucks for that.

But after it warms up it's fine for me.

Interesting, I hadn't considered environmental impact.

I would expect a PSP numbers announcement on Feb. 5th.;)
From the financials at GI.biz

Sony attributes this increase to the growing demand for its PSP handheld, which shipped 6.22 million units in the third quarter alone, and has now shipped a combined total of 15 million units worldwide.

Sales must be something like 13+ million then, unless stores selling PSPs like to buy in lots of stock so half of it sits on the shelves never being sold ;)

Ah, so I was a little over a week off. Darn! Yeah I agree with you sales are most definetly over I would say 12 million. But didn't Sony project that they would ship 14 million PSPs through March 31st sometime last year?

They must be in demand more than what Sony previously thought. By March 31st they will probably ship at least 17 million PSPs.
