How well is psp doing?

Dreamcast wasn't a better system than ps2 tech-wise. And it didn't have enough games.
N64's controller, game cost, and lack to produce FMV's was the reason why it fell.
Gamecube had no games other than mario and zelda coming out for it.
3DO and Jaguar over priced, technically flawed systems with no install base.
Again, XBOX had no install base, few games and was big and ugly. It also came out too late, and the promise that XBOX was far more capable than ps2 was a lie. All that wait for what?
And Gamegear wasn't portable. I say this because of size and battery life. Plus you could not play it during the day due to the poor lcd.

That being said, what you've said does not apply to the DS/PSP "war". Here's way...
1.PSP is graphically noticably superior.
2.Does more than play games, similar to ps1 playing cd's and ps2 playing dvd's.
3. PSP has a great design.
4.PSP's install base is base on ps1 and 2, so that's in the bag.
5.PSP has the ablity to upgrade
6.Game's on psp don't cost much more than the competition
7.It's smaller than the competition
8.For what it displays and is able to do battery life is great.

The only thing i see is wrong is the price. DS has no bussiness selling like that, and i base that on what the PSP is. Boy i hope psp comes out with great games next year and put up the sell slack. And a price drop. I don't hate the DS, nor do i hope the worst of it. I just want an even race. I hope psp is able to catch up.:???:
the concept i introduced was simple. all of the hardware i mentioned was top of the line when it was released. you can revise history and say "ps2 was more powerfull than dreamcast", but PS2 wasn't out. i know many dreamcast fans (including myself) who were disapointed when they realized the potential for the system would never be realized because many games were nothing but ports from psx/n64.

oh yeah, and then there's this...
1. gamegear is graphically noticably superior (to the original gameboy).
2. gamegear does more than play games (you can watch TV)
3. gamegear has a great design
4. gamegear's install base is base ongenesis, so that's in the bag.
5. upgrade? yeah i can flash the eprom in my 386. woot!, ultimate gaming power!
6. Game's on psp don't cost much more than the competition (30% isn't much, after all)
7. It's smaller than the competition (if you are comparing PSP to Lynx you are correct. the DS and PSP are very close in size and weight)
8. For what it displays and is able to do battery life is great. (whenever you have to start out by saying "for what it does..." you're making an excuse. PSP doesn't have great battery life. it's acceptable most of the time, but it isn't great)

The PSP has great internal hardware but there are problems with the system. The pricing of the hardware and games is outragous. The lack of original content hell lack of good content is also a major problem.

The DS has problems with the system also. What doesn't? Oh and lack of good content? Here's 20 games that you can get right now in NA or Japan. The only one that you can't get right now is Locoroco.

So I'm going to ask you now. What's the problem with the PSP's original and normal content?

the PSP's library has fleshed out considerabley in the last month or two. mckmas8808's list is a pretty good spot to look if you need a new game, though i would avoid midway arcade treasures if you're an MK fan. actualy, i'd avoid it anyway, since most of the games are a bit spotty IRT quality. not just emulation quality, but translation of the controls to the PSP and the screen aspect ratio causes issues.

Higher costing games will cost more to the customer. Get over it. And it's not that bad.

But that's not what was being discussed (value of the game, i.e. is the few dollars more than the average DS game worth it). All that was said was that the DS games are cheaper than PSP games, and they are.

Quite a few of those games ARE very interesting but the problem is that they aren't out now in the States, which is where I get my POV on how the PSP is doing. Once games of those calliber(sp) debut and continue to roll out, I'm sure the PSP will pick up even more sales.

This is exactly the response that I love to hear. Honest and straight forward. I agree Ty, I'm definitley wanting on 5 of those games that are out in Japan right now. I wish more PSP games that sprun from Japan could be released quicker in the states.

Why is it that PSP games take so long to translate, while PS2 games don't seem to take as long?

because the 50 million PS2 owners overshadow the 2.5 million PSP owners. i think it's largely a buisness decision based on potential profits.

out of curiosity, what do you guys think is the strongest title available for PSP. i don't mean best reviewed, or best selling, i mean something that you've played and made you feel that the PSP was worth the price. just one title, please.

back on topic, i saw this little nugget today...

Sony: PSP On Track For 6 Million In North America

Officials from Sony Corp. have stated that the company is on track to double the number of PSP consoles sold in North America, to around 6 million by the end of 2005. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) spokeswoman Molly Smith has told Reuters that the company is on course to reach the 2.5 to 3 million additional sales predicted by president and CEO Kaz Hirai in October.

According to independent market researcher NPD Funworld, the PSP has sold 2.5 million units in the U.S. alone, as of November, compared to a figure of 3 million given by Sony. By comparison the Nintendo DS, which launched four months earlier, has sold 2.7 million units in the U.S. at the end of November, according to NPD.

These figures mean that the PSP will have to sell a significant amount of consoles during December to meet its targets – assuming Canadian sales increase by the end of the year from the current total of around 700,000 units. NPD figures estimate around 350,000 PSPs were sold in the U.S. in November, behind a figure of approximately 370,000 Nintendo DS and 690,000 Game Boy Advance consoles.

In light of these results, Sony’s targets, which might indicate consoles shipped to retailers, as opposed to sold through at retail, seem optimistic, with IDC video game analyst Schelley Olhava commenting that a price cut had been hoped for during the Christmas gift buying season, and also suggesting: “The market is limited because the price is so high”.

In the past few months I've bought:

- Virtua Tennis
- GTA: LCS
- Kingdom of Paradise
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo

Before that, all I had were the games I bought at launch (Untold Legends and DW). There are also a number of games I'm looking foward to on the horizon, but I've spent so much time on these (particularly SOCOM online) that I almost feel like I have too many games for the system.

The non-gaming features are a big bonus as well. I watch movies copied to flash on trips and listen to mp3s at work and in the car (PSP is connected to my stereo via the aux jack).

This is the perfect quote that Sony would love to hear. Seems like you love your psp.

How do you connect your PSP to your aux jack in your car?

I'm very happy with my PSP -- at first it's kind of strange to see it, because it's really the first time that a person could have a very comparable gaming experience on the road as in their home. It's quite amazing.

My sister also loves hers.

I can't wait for next year and the years coming up.

For me, Lumines is by far the most addictive game I've played this side of Tony Hawk 3 on PS2. Couldn't stop playing it till I cracked 999,999 and I still bust it out every now and again, it's better than tetris for me :)

I've already got 7 titles for my PSP, which is way more in the console's lifespan than any other console I've ever had. Love it. Heaps more I'm keen to get too.

Would have bought a DS by now but am too busy playing PSP :D

I understand the people who are saying the game lineup is thin because up until about two months ago, it was pretty thin. But it's a whole different situation now. I haven't picked up Burnout Legends, but I hear that's good too.

All you need is a stereo phono-to-phono cable to connect from the PSP remote into the aux input on the stereo. Right now I keep the PSP locked in the glove and only the remote is outside. I may come up with a more sophisticated solution some point down the line, but this is good enough for now.

Oh yeah, another great feature is the RSS podcasting. I listen to NPR/CNN/etc. on my PSP at work all the time.

That's what I thought you meant. That's why I said check out the Syphon Filter game, so that you could see what's on the horizon. Also check this out....

Sony has announced the crossing of two important sales milestones in the UK, with the PlayStation 2 selling over one million units during 2006, while the PSP has passed the half million mark.

The success of the PSP has been difficult to gauge in the UK since its launch in September, following stock problems with both it and the rival Nintendo DS portable. Sony is now claiming a total of 610,000 sales until December 10th, with the end of year total likely to be close to 750,000.

Speaking to UK trade paper MCV, analyst Nick Parker commented: "The UK has performed better than any other European territory, and Ray Maguire will have undoubtedly hit his targets once again. And PSP will have at least met, if not exceeded, Sony’s expectations for the UK."

By the end of the year the PSP would have almost sold one million units in 4 months. Keep in mind Sony only sold around 7.2 million PS1's in the UK to date. They will get to one million in about 5 months.

What about japan there's no catching up there.

Does anyone have latest NA/EU PSP sales figures? In Japan DS is thrashing PSP....PSP is hitting one six whereas DS is hitting three sixes per over.
