Halo Anniversary

I think Bungie could have done better with the sequels and tell the story also a lot better, but none of that takes anything away from the first Halo!

While I agree that Bungie could have done some things better, Halo 2's campaign was a bit of a disappointment to me, I think they were always at a disadvantage. There's something about experiencing something for the "first time" that sequels almost never reproduce IMO. I don't think we'll ever see another Halo game give us the same experience as CE, mainly due to the fact that it was so new back then.

Yeah the coop was great, only problem was that it used horizontal split on 16:9 TVs and that's a bit too wide.

mm... I dunno, I really hated the vertical split in Halo 2 with the 16:9 mode because it was like tunnel vision. :s We always preferred the wider FOV especially given how the levels were designed. For Halo 3+, we also hated having the black bars. Would have preferred them to fill it out completely.

Oh man, I used to have Halo LAN parties at my house every weekend. The routine was pizza, beer, rearrange furniture, set up TVs and network switches, then play til the early morning. LOL, I still remember the sound of 16 pistols cocking at the start of a match, everyone bitching about everyone else screen watching, and the satisfaction of back whacking a dumbass who you snuck up on. Nothing since has replicated that experience. Fond memories.

Any chance of it coming to PC too? I liked HALO:CE, never really completed it though. Replayed a bit of it again last year, loved it this time as it still looked fresh somehow. A PC version which can run at 1920X1080 with new fx,sounds and graphics would be really nice ! :D

I didn't have problems with the core gameplay in any of the Halo games, but the storytelling aspect fell apart after the first one. I think you should be able to get 90% of everything just by playing the game. The books etc. should only be there to deepen the experience. I was left quite confused about the story when I just played the games and two returns to earth just felt like a clusterfuck.

Is there somewhere some proper summary on what actually happened, who is what and where? :)

I think there was a way around the vertical split, if you set your TV as 4:3 in the console settings, then it used horizontal split IIRC, of course then it was black bars or streched image, but playing with different aspect rations on the TV settings to get some mix between the two worked pretty good imo.

For Halo 2 and onwards I've only played Coop through Live to get a proper screen.

You could probably get away with the halopedia summaries of the novels and descriptions for various characters. But like any wiki-related resource, you'll suddenly find yourself in the future and well-versed in all aspects of the universe that you never intended.

LOL This is so true :) Have spent countless houres on the Halo Wiki's, have also read the 6 original books and the first from the Forrunner Trilogy. The Halo universe is quite fantastic IMO.

Hopefully when the powers that control the Halo franchise gets the collective asses in gear and make the Halo movie(s), it will turn out just as big and successful as all the other big sci-fi franschises (Star Wars, Star Trek etc)

A Halo movie done the right way could be as amazing as the Lord of The Rings movie trilogy. The thing about a Halo movie is that it would requre a budget bigger then the LoTR movies to properly realize the Halo universe.I think James Caan would be a good fit for the role of Captain Keyes. What actor would play as the Master Chief and which actress do you think is good to play as Cortana?

Honestly, I believe that 343i will reproduce that first time feeling with Halo 4.Everytime i watch the H4 trailer, I just get these vibes that the game is going to be amazing. It also helps that many former CE and Halo 2 dev members are working on Halo 4.

I dont see how. A lot of that Halo CE feeling for me was about graphics, the Xbox was new and doing things PS2 let alone prior systems couldn't dream of on console. There was a lot of wow factor there. Of course it wasnt just about power but the good design of the art and graphics and levels and AI. It was also for me the first actually enjoyably playable FPS on a console, of course allowed by dual analog sticks (I was coming from Dreamcast and it's single stick). It was the first time I ever experienced a feeling like being in a squad with fellow AI soldiers. So many new things. It just was a brand new experience in a lot of ways.

For a new Halo title to get anything close to a similar reaction for me I think it would have to be a launch title on a super powerful console that was first in it's generation. Not only that but they would have to have a mostly strictly enforced media blackout prior so that I didn't spoil it all for myself in vids (so, basically impossible, heh). Even if it pulled off those things, it would likely still be based on tried and true Halo/FPS gameplay rather than be anything "new" to me like CE was, so it's impact would be dulled there.

Halo CE came out on 2001, I think that was around the time I got my first PC and really joined the internet. So IIRC it wasn't spoiled by vids (I was probably on 56k then anyway).

Ranger, I definitely agree that Halo CE was ahead of its time for a console game with amazing graphics, excellent music, buttery smooth controls, top notch AI, etc.It truly was a groundbreaking game that is widely considered as one of the greatest games of all-time.I vividly remember with regular marines firs saw you, they were awe and disbelief that an actual Spartan soldier was fighting alongside of them, which added alot to the immersion of the gameplay and the story itself.

Fighting the Elites is honestly one of the greatest gaming experiences that I've ever had as every encounter with them required alot of tactic and strategy just to have a fighting chance against those tough as nails bastards.I also agree with you that Halo 4 SHOULD be a launch title on the next xbox as that would really give its visuals a OMG that looks amazing sensation. Not sure why 343i is bothering to develop Halo 4 for xbox 360 as I'm not sure how much more juice they can squeeze from the xbox 360.

As far as Halo 4's gameplay is concerned, I'd love if 343i implemented destructible enviornments, the ability to create and set-up booby traps, disarm an opponents weapon etc. What gameplay features would you like to see in Halo 4?

Have not given too much tought into what actors they should use. But since we most likely won't see Master Chief's face any tall/big actor could play him. As for Cortana I would prefer a full cgi Cortana with original voice actress.

I think they could get away with not using any big name actors, but time will show I guess :D

I think 343i can still impress, despite being on 360 - the tech/graphics of 360 exclusives still fall somewhat short of their PS3's counterparts and I don't see why 343 can't better Reach.

I mean BF3 will probably look half a generation better than BFBC2 on consoles and unlike DICE, 343 just have to focus on a single platform and don't have to support vast, destructible environments or 32 players.

Plus, I think even if there aren't any significant improvements in tech over Reach - they could always manage to show up Bungie's art, which isn't always that great (though their concepts are good, the actual in-game execution is somewhat lacking). They should also move towards a more realistic look for Halo 4.

Lame if true. I always liked Halo's color pallete. Besides, Purple is the Covie's favorite color. LOL!

No covies in halo 4 though :(

Yea, I was kinda hoping for more Elites - it's a pity they're now friendly with the humans.

Whatever the new enemies are - I hope it's not a bunch of Flood.

It'll likely be Forerunner, but hopefully more than just flying robots with laser beams.
Is there any indication in the books about what Forerunner forces are like besides the Sentinels?

The other thing that would be interesting is if we could fight enemy humans (like rebels or something) - otherwise there's basically half the weapon sandbox that is only been used against you in multiplayer.

I think I heard somewhere in an interview that Halo 4 will not feature any more purple.

I don't mind purple as long as it is quite a dark shade, it's an alien looking colour - as long as the overall look and feel is realistic and believable I don't mind what they use.

God please no,Halo is Halo I don't want it to look like every other modern shooter

it's obviously subjective but I have completely different opinion about their art,I think every level in Reach looks just phenomenal .Skyboxes, colours, flying plasma everywhere, enemy design I like it all and biggest flaw in this game for me is aliasing which can often destroy great looking levels like Exodus for example. For me Reach has this great sci-fi look.
