Gran Turismo 5 - gameplay only thread

The only review that matters (its just part 1, part 2 will be coming next month):

They seem to love the menus/UI.
Though they are disappointed about lack of mechanical damage, but hey its coming in a patch atleast.

Two more user reviews:

Hope Polyphony take their suggestions to heart. I hear lot's of complains about:
* Too little XP for high level race
* AI in A-Spec has room for improvement
* More consistent tuning options across cars
I wonder why do people complain about the GT AI so much, I mean its pretty much just like Forza 3 (as the video posted few pages ago proves) and that game was instead praised for its AI. Is it because GT5 has 16 cars which makes for quite a number of instances where they bump into each other around tight corners ?

I don't get the UI hate as well, its elegantly laid out and its full of detail/information the only problem with it (and a big one) is that its very slow....it would've been awesome if the menus loaded instantly after you click something.

... or both AI are not good enough for advanced players. There is very little or no reason to compare to Forza AI (or any racing game AI) you know. ^_^
The B-Spec AI is already "different" from Forza anyway.

If it can be better, why not ?

EDIT: For UI, there are indeed missing buttons and convenience features. Most glaring are the missing "Replay" button after a race, and the "Search Cars in Dealership" buttons before a race.

That's GT for yah. There are thousands of thing wrong with it. Things every other racing game does right. Yet it's something PD aren't capable of despite having probably the biggest budget and ridiculously long development time.

In theory they can patch a lot to make it better, but they didn't get where they are today by listening to the fans.

Well, they'll need to manage the scope. They certainly heard the cries for damage. :(

I hope they hear the plead for those 2 missing buttons at least. The rewards are core to the MP gameplay, so I guess they will tune it along the way. The AI is core to SP gameplay, this is the part I'm not sure if they will follow the fans.

This is assuming people are complaining about A-Spec AI instead of the Scenario-based driving (Special Events).

Nice review, made me want to go out and buy a wheel and GT5.

Playing with the wheel is a different experience (more immersive and complex to handle). You have to deal with the wheel turning by itself due to contact with other vehicles and the road. I didn't expect it. ^_^

I am rather intrigued by the experience so far. I really like the GT5 racing. I think people who complained are playing high level games that are harder to tune. Please please Polyphony, enhance them before I get there. ;-)

My wife will probably pull my ear when she found out I have a wheel in the office.

Ha hah ! Exactly my thoughts. They say if you like what you do, you don't have to work a single day.

Seriously, in a quiet office, the wheel makes too much noise while turning.

Have you got yours yet ?

What wheel do you have?

I have a G25 and it made me consider a Fanatec....AND the power seat for the wheel

I bought a Driving Force GT. Stupid me, should have visited my friend in Logitech first. I'm sure he'll gimme a free one. I forgot.

-_-

What does the Fanatec have that my GT doesn't ?

Well, if you check the video above they talk about the wheels. There is no deadzone in the Fanatec one, and the pedals respond as they should giving you an edge over anyone else with a different wheel or a controller, whereas the Logitech ones have a very sensitive brake pedal. They said its the best hands down

I opened mt DFGT pedals up and adjusted the brake pedals, kind of moved a notch so that instant brake pressure doesn't register. This procedure is on Youtube somewhere aswell.

Could you post a link? I have looked for that video in youtube but could not find it. I had real problems with brakes in the lotus race because of this.

Damn - I just reached my first 1'000'000 yesterday and wasted it on a McLaren F1 and some mods... It handles like an absolute nightmare! :(

Any advice on how to tune it in a way that it becomes usuable? I'm actually thinking of selling it (probably won't get much for it) to get some Ferrari or Lamborghini to complete those events. Really feel gutted at the moment. I will want to own the F1 eventually, but using up my entire savings on what is my 3rd car and still heaps of events still to win/unlock wasn't really the brightest idea... :(

Help! :(

Learn to deal with cars that oversteer?

One of the best pedal mods for the DF Pro and DF GT is ... taking off your shoes.

I found the link via GTPlanet.

On a game related note, anyone got a race car i can borrow? Or one of the touring cars for the Expert series? Or maybe even a Countach for the Historic Cup? I Beat Monaco but not DF. Thanks in advance.

I have the Countach but I never upgraded it, never thought of using it for the Historic Cup, and buying and upgrading an Ac.Cobra instead. Probably would have been better off with the Countach instead, as then I'd probably almost have enough money for the F1 car by now ... :D Quite a challenge though with that Cobra ...

Haven't you won a Countach yourself yet? It's the Lamborghini Exclusive thing. If you haven't run that one yet, you can borrow my pimped Gallardo instead.

This guide should determine what you run how and when:

I think if you do it properly, you only have to buy maybe 3 cars in total, and then you can save all your other money for the F1 car.

I wouldn't mind borrowing the countach mate. I'll even do it up! I did have one but sold it early doors 8(. My next purchase is the 4m bracket to get a race car.

Did someone lend you a Countach yet? I have a fully tuned Countach that I used for that race that I can lend you. I have no idea how to do that, though.

I think you can gift a car to a friend (1 car per day). When he's done, he'll give it back to you. Look for the "Gifting" button/icon.
