Racing sims vs real life

How about instead of aruging over what sim racer is best by pictures and whatever, we just lap cars and compare them to real life lap times?

I dont really have time to do this (and i dont have a racing wheel so i cannot really get as good laptimes as this would require), but if anyone is bored, i would be very interested in the results ;)

Obviously we would need to figure out what tyres are the most realistic for each game (for example in GT4 you should use the N tyres as R3 tyres gives you more grip than a F1 car :p, i guess "stock" tyres should do for all games.)

Here is a list of nurburgring laptimes

Im looking forward to GT5 then i can compare top gear powerboard laps with GT5 :)

Jeremy Clarkson did it in Top Gear using a Honda NSX.

The result was that he's nowhere near brave enough to push the car in real life as hard as he can in the game. He was at least 10 seconds slower on some California race track... you can google the rest ;)

Wow, there was actually a well thought out reply to that kotaku thread that I liked...

That realism works only to one direction, from real life to game, at least what I recall from the times it has been tested with GT series. You can get same time in the game you got on actual track, but grinding a time in the game and trying to hit that on track has not been successful. You can do most outrageous breaking and speeds in corners in game as you don't need to care for your life.

Which makes sense. Going from real life to the console, you already have an idea of what the RL limits are for your style of driving. You've already had a chance to push yourself on track.

Going from the console, to real life, would be quite a bit more terrifying in trying to reporduce moves that have real life consequences on your life.

Regards,
SB
