Gamescom 2010 : General Discussion

I will try my best to test out or see as much games as possible :)
I will be there at Friday and Saturday...
I already have a games list of one kilometer length or so, which I want to test/see...I admit that I am excited like a little kid and I cannot wait :runaway:
(only 2 times sleeping left)

I will be going Saturday as well. Looking forward to see all the stuff , maybe get some goodies and shooting pics of booth babes. Got to check out that playmate who got her own game as well. :D

Ok,
first day resume!

I got to see a lot, and will give some short impressions.

Killzone 3: super graphics, very impressing...some of the best I have seen!! I could play the same 3 stages of the E3 demo! MLAA looks ok, but does still had AA issues...
Very cool - and one of my favorites! I did not had the feeling that the controls changed to be honest, but I did not had problems in KZ2 either...what I liked: the close combat stuff - cool!

Motorstorm 3: super cool! Graphics are comparable to MS2 graphics, I could not see an upgrade - but there was definitively more smoke debris and chaos around, but my major issue with MS2: the textures, remain IMO! Overall my favorite racer, but I love the MS series.

Infamous 2: I could play the same demo as all the vids have shown so far....major dissapointment! Graphics are ugly as hell...I don' know what happend to this game?! As an explanation: I am not used to play games this close to the screen...so aliasing this close was more prominent in all of the games, but in Infamous 2 it was kind of disgusting! The ultra low resolution explosion+smoke does not help either. Futhermore, the gameplay in this demo was rather lame...you had to follow the car, which kind of made a time pressure on you, so you could not go around much and try stuff - overall: boooo!

Dead Nations: only watched it, does not look special to be honest...

LBP2: just watched it to see the MLAA implementation. Looked good, but still had some issues, even for non-thin geometries. I felt that during movement, some near horizontal edges lost their AA?! But I am not a techie, so I wait until the analyses kick in!

GT 5: graphics look much much better than the demo I once downloaded. AA was good. Track was Nürburgring. What I liked: lightning was super, smoke looked rather cool and the car models are sensationell. The problem I had: in my experience...it ran super smooth...until you have some other cars around, then I had the impression that framerate took a hit, and I think I had some screen tearing when smoke kicked in. What is weird, probably only my personal impression: when framerate suffered, aliasing in near by trees was somehow more noticable?! But I think it is better to wait for the analysis of PS360...
Gameplay was super difficult. I choose simulation mode...was difficult as hell...it felt rather solid and good, but I cannot compare it to other games, sorry?!

SOCOM 4: I only tried this game because of move. Graphics where ok-ish...but Move controll where so terrible that I could not believe it to be honest - unplayable for me. I asked one of the Playstation convention babe if the calibration of Move was off, because on the neighbor display it looked much better...but she could not help, and I lost interest: seemed to be lame as hell!

Sly Raccoon: I only played this game to test 3D gaming. Sorry, but absolutely not impressed. Comparable to cinema experience. Does not help gameplay, does not look good (again, screen got very dark when the glasses went on) - so to be honest: 3D gaming is waste of time in my book!!

OK, and now to the absolute senstation of the day. I got to see RAGE. But, could not play it but rather watched a live on stage demo. The showed the Xbox version. You could see first the Xbox dev kit screen with the RAGE executable. Interesting side note: there was in red letter the message:
addl. memory 448 MB

I am not sure what this means...if it is indeed the RAM?!, it means that they don't use the full available 512 - 32 = 480 MB (maybe due to PS3?!)

I am rather sure that this was the Xbox version, because the demo once crashed and they had to reboot, where you could see the green Xbox ball at the beginning.

Graphics are fundamental!! This is the best thing I have ever seen, to be honest - if this is indeed constant 60Hz...call me ultra extreme shocked. It sometimes looked like pre-rendered graphics, never seen this before! The detail and density is so great that it shocked me the whole 20 min presentation. Lightning is good as well. Maybe some of the explosions looked not so good, and the water was kind of lame too. Animation sometimes where great, sometimes looked lame! But the overall impression was simple jaw dropping. I wonder how this MP game will translate to the PS3?! And I simple cannot imagine the PC version of this game - it must be killing gaming brains or so!

Gameplay looked cool as well, although KI had some issues. Cool stuff: you can carry at least 2 weapons. with different AMMO type and you get some cool gadgets as well: the little buggy and a cool little robot spider which helps shooting. Very impressed overall!

The demo was rather long, and the showed some new stuff for me: one level called dead city was extreme impressive, like the end of the demo...where a skyscraper tall monster appeared and attacked you!!

Some RAGE flaws I noticed: during driving scene, framerate suffered. An additional explosion and the game teared.

When he used the sniper gun: he went into zoom, then out of zoom and the textures in the environment needed 1-2 sec to load again. I recognized in other scenes some slight texture load as well.

That's normal, happens in near vertical/horizontal edges on GOW3 as well. You just have to tone down your expectations, it's not going to be bullshot quality.

Interesting thoughts. Personally I do not see why people rave over Rage's graphics. It looks good but not great to me, though the tall boss is impressive. And it's a 60 hertz game. That alone virtually nullifies it from being top tier graphics if we're being sensible...

Ahh ! The other inFamous 2 boss fight trailer actually got me hyped. I shall tone down my expectation a notch.

This I want to try as well. What exactly was wrong with the control ? The scheme is clumsy/unnatural ? Or is it laggy ? or too shaky ? etc.

Yeah, I was dissapointed as well, but as you..the other gamepay clip got me hyped as well?!
Probably just bad demo, and of corse: pre-alpha stage!

Hm, it was ultra clumsy: I could not hit one soldier! When you put the pointer on the side of the screen, you avatar turned in this direction...although this was the left stick job as well...than I had the feeling that it was bad calibrated: when I put Move straight, the target cross was deep down the screen...so I had to push up Move so that the sphere points towards the sky - not natural, laggy no precision for me - as I said, I could not kill simple foes standing still and shooting at me :(

Typically, I measure the graphics of a game in WTF per minutes - and this index skyrocketed during the RAGE presentation ;)

Especially as RAGE is targeted 60Hz, I cannot believe how they pull this of! You can easily compare this to other 30Hz console games out there...maybe the effects like smoke and explosion are a little bit downgraded. But for instance I watched some guys playing Medal of Honor (PS3)...and it looked like a joke in comparison! Of corse, the art style and the setting play a major role as well...this is for instance the problem with Crysis 2 for me - the shown setting was rather boring to me, whereas I like the RAGE style and setting a lot! The only game I liked maybe a little bit more graphically was KZ3 - but of corse, this is a 30Hz game...

BTW, if someone is at gamescom. Check out the Sony Booth B-020. There you only have to wait once...when you are in, you can basically check nearly all Sony games and some other games as well - rather relaxed and cool!

Today, I hope that I can check out HALO:Reach - I am curious as hell how the game looks. Even my PC gaming buddy wants to join me there (hint: he hates console games and playing FPS with a controller :LOL:, but he respects the HALo franchise)!

Then I nearly got all my must sees. Unfortunately, Brink is not personal hands on, but comparable to RAGE...live demo only...I am not sure if I am brave enough to wait 2hours+ to see it?!

Black Ops is live demo only as well..not sure if it is worth to wait this long?!

Dragons Age 2: I had the feeling that you have to wait like for ever or so?!

Lord of the Shadows...I hope I can see this game and maybe check it out?!

I did not see Fable 3 yet...at SONY and MS it seems that the main focus is Move and Kinect...

BTW: what I forgot yesterday to mention. I could also see this Live Kung Fu game. This was really astounding to be honest. What was cool: they had some kind of Capoeira Master Ninja Karate Sensei who did the fighting...it was really cool how he dodged kicked, punshed and jumped - cool, seemed to work good, although I did (of corse) not try it my self and cannot judge the lag, but it looked cool

What's WITN?

MS booth is great: you can test there HALO, Fable 3 and lots of multi plat games like (Vanquish, Unleashed 2, Castlevania, Enslaved, Capcom VS Marvel)!
Hint...if you (due to whatever reason) are not interested in HALO Reach...you typically can go in directly, as no one seems to wait for Fable 3, all for HALO 3 only!
As this booth was so great, I went there two times...first time for HALO Reach, after your 10 min play session, you are allowed to check out all the other games as well! The second time to test Vanquish more carefully. To do this quickly I just said that I want to see Fable 3, which got me in rather quick: I tested Fable 3 and all the MP games !

Hi Billy,

Thanks for your impressions so far. So how's parking there? Is it easy to go there? I'm still kind of thinking about going, it's only an hour's drive away, but I'm rather worried about the city being too busy with traffic, taking forever to get in etc.

How's your experience been?
