Formula 1 - 2015 season

Merc uses their remaining engine development tokens with an eye on 2016 evaluation. Note, that evidently this is the first time that the development is not available to customer teams.

Mercedes has used all seven of its remaining engine development tokens ahead of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix with an eye on 2016.

It means drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will each utilise their third power unit of the season in the W06 ahead of first practice at Monza.

The move represents a tactical change by Mercedes, with the development only available to the works team for now and not customers Williams, Force India and Lotus, as it effectively pulls forward 2016 development.

Mercedes has totally nailed this engine formula. They are just so ahead, especially on energy recovery and deployment.

Oh and by the way, guess who have grid penalties at Monza for engine changes? McLaren you say? .........

Its not just the engine. Clearly the car is the most efficient overall, but in contrast to last year they have nailed reliability as well - both drivers have finished in the points every race so far this season, which can't be said for last.
 
For McLaren Honda, the new engine for Monza is a tactical change because they can't do anything anyway in Monza. Probably the same for RB. Basically McLaren just collecting engines so they don't need to get penalty on the track that they can actually make an impression. Reliability wise, I think Honda right now is okay. They just need to figure this ERS thing...

But if we compare to RBR and Renault V8 dominance era, Renault never had the best ERS. RBR had to employ a supercapacitor-style dealie for that. What Renault had was a highly programmable engine with great driveability but lowest all-out power. Mercedes then had the best ERS and probably highest power. That was engine-wise. RBR had the over-all strongest aerodynamics in that era while Mercedes-powered cars couldn't really compete in that sense.

Now Mercedes has the full package it seems. Aero, combustion, power, ERS, driveability and a highly programmable engine.

Kimi got all the benefit of being towed by vettel in qualli, I wonder if he will be expected to return the favour on race day

Rosberg lost the championship in Australia. Hamilton has moved on to another level entirely, Rosberg is not able to match him, in the race or qualifying. Lets be honest though, Rosberg benefited from numerous Hamilton DNFs last year otherwise the gap would've probably been as big then too.

Anyone heard why Kimi couldn't get away, didn't watch all the analysis.

Yep, the reason is still unknown though. According to Kimi everything was set up properly, according to Arriabene it might have been that Kimi made mistake, but not sure yet, and that it will be investigated thoroughly to make sure it doesn't happen again
 
Wrt McLaren, they already make their own hybrid engine for the P1
I don't know why they don't develop another hybrid car engine that just so happens to be f1 legal, they could test and develop it as much as they wanted
and when it's fully sorted announce they have just decided to build their own f1 engine.
If they had a road car that used an almost identical engine they could get away with a hell of a lot of *covert* development and testing.

Given the practicalities of an F1 engine, I doubt they could successfully argue that it is a roadcar. For example, having timers that come on at 5am to start pre-heating the engine so that it is actually warm enough to be able to turn over (the engines sieze at room temperature) doesn't seem a likely candidate for a consumer vehicle.
 
The finger is back: Vettel's pole breaks Hamilton's run of consecutive poles at 7 poles in a row. Vettel's pole lap was incredible, half a second faster than Ricciardo on P2.
 
Bulls have a good chance in the race if their engines last. Their long runs were quite impressive during FP2. Start should be entertaining ;)

They should have fresh engines since they took double engine penalties in Monza.

I hope Danny Ric wins, it would be soo fantastic and really stick it to Vettel and his finger (no pun intended)
 
Well that was interesting, a guy having a stroll on the track o_O

WTF Rossi?! The idiot didn't realize he needs to pass everyone and now he ruined Kimi having any chance to jump Ricciardo on restart
