Formula 1 - 2022 Season

The rules don't allow penalties impacting budget.

I wouldn't read too much into what Horner is saying. It's not like he's going to say it hardly makes a difference. Saying it could cost up to 0.2~0.5 seconds a lap makes it feel like a good penalty. It's also not that easy to calculate the impact as all teams are different. Williams has like what, 40~50% more windtunnel time compared to the top 3 teams? But their car isn't particularly fast.
Hehe. The racing version of tech debt. They will eventually catch up I think I’m the aero department. Budget and engines will be challenging for them however.

I did not see that coming. Brazil quali:
A Ferrari engine is on pole... only it's in an American car driven by a Dane. Tell me someone bet a fiver on that. Ferrari making stupid decisions again. There is so much cruft that needs to be scoured out of the decision making machinery in that team.

Should make the sprint race interesting.

Track evolution was relentless. In Q1, Mick got P3 just after Kev lost P3 for exceeding track limits. Unclear if Mick just made a mistake or mistimed his last Q1 run, but at one point he had similar pace in identical conditions. Latifi was P1 and ended up P16! Albon hit P1 shortly after and made it into Q2. P11-P13 were like .05s behind P10 in Q2. Times were tight and constantly improving until Russell red flagged Q3 (with a weird but in-character mistake) with 8 minutes to go and it started raining, ensuring no one could improve.

Edit: Mick said his lap felt good but maybe he underestimated grip level, so no traffic. I wondered why Alfa was nowhere when its brother from the Ferrari mother Haas progressed, but apparently they both switched to softs too late in Q1.

Weirdly, Russell said he wanted to do a 360 and that’s why he ended up backwards in the trap. A 360 back to the turn he locked up and went off at??? It just looked like he was too eager (can F1 drivers get embarassed?) to get back on track and goosed the throttle instead of feathering it to continue on the asphalt in front of the barriers.

Finally, a YouTube comment said it best: “Ferrari Stragedy.”

Oh look, Verstappen didn't let Perez back through, who could have guessed
yeah verstappen sucks
leclerc tried to steal sainz podium

and alonso did great even with that 10s pit stop

and congrats to the winner

sprint was good but race was a real corker, lots of action

Even if that was payback from that Monaco Perez thing that was very mean from Verstappen and he shouldn't have done it that way, it should have being way more subtle. Also what Hamilton 'did' to him in the start was EXACTLY what he did to Ocon a few years back before he litteraly assaulted the french driver (who took it very well all considered). Nasty stuff from Verstappen again. He is becoming worse than Hamilton ever was.

I am predicting next year a few more will hope for a Mercedes comeback as both drivers were really impressive here. Leclerc had a great comeback too in that race.

i have to say im with verstappen on this one. monaco was a pivotal race for the championship. after monaco verstappen hasnt won a single race and leclerc won the championship in style in mexico. if only verstappen had won in monaco ...

Huh? Leclerc won what? He's fighting Perez for the 2nd spot, they're evenly matched in points now. And Verstappen won his first legal championship with illegal car in Suzuka (first being "illegal" (granted by not following the rules to favour the new golden boy) championship with legal car)

Max’s post-race interviews should settle any questions as to why he got the penalty for the collision with Lewis, though quite a few former drivers feel it was 50-50:

“He had no intention to give me space and I had no intention to back out.” F1 interview

“If you don’t leave me space then we come together.” V Sport interview

“I went around the outside and I immediately [?] felt he was not going to leave space, so I just went for it. He didn’t leave me space so I knew we were going to get together. It cost him the race win. For me it gave me five seconds. It wouldn’t have mattered anything for my race because we were just way too slow. It’s just a shame, you know. I thought we could race quite well together but clearly the intention was not there to race.” Sky Sports interview

I still don’t understand the obliviousness of saying he could “race quite well together” with someone when he clearly knows he could have stayed behind and tried again at T4 like almost everyone else who couldn’t make a T1-T2 pass stick. He almost never gives space but always expects it. Some people said Russell backed out of the same move on Max several times in the sprint race, but I only have to think back to T1, lap 1 of the race and Lando backing out of a very similar move on Perez (late-braking up the inside, two wheels off track, but knowing the kerb would send him into Perez and so backing off to fight another corner).

I remain convinced that he’s a top-tier driver but continue to think of him as a poor wheel-to-wheel racer in some respects. He’s impatient and presumptive.

Holding a grudge over Monaco seems beyond petty. Checo was as integral as Newey, Honda, and Masi to his title last year and continued to move over for him this year. I’d be surprised if he’ll continue to do so next year. F1 would be better with less compliant “number two” drivers.

Speaking of Masi, the new FIA director forgot to unlap all the cars before the restart. Tsunoda said he felt bullied.

It won’t happen, but it’s crazy to think that Russell is even mathematically able to get second place in the drivers’ championship if he wins the last race and LeClerc and Perez take each other out. That’s how bad Ferrari have been and reliable Russell/Merc have been.

Woosh

so the season is over and verstappen has won and perez didnt get second thus denying rbr their coveted 1-2 because verstappen decided to refuse helping perez who let him past in brazil to try to overtake cars, by publicly throwing a hand grenade in the now infamous team radio call and then refusing to say what its really about in the scorched aftermath. horner and rbr are flapping about too.

was it monaco where quali shenanigans have happened before (famously schumi and rosberg, the former punished, the latter not)? if not what else could it be? it feels like perez has been subservient the whole season and verstappen didnt really need this controversy for his image.

i dont know it for a fact but i believe perez has it in his contract that he has to let verstappen by

here's to more teams fighting for the wins next year. i hope we are not in for a verstappen era vettel style at rbr

It really wasn't that bad. 2 of the 4 championships were actually tight and 2nd spot didn't go to RBR in either one

but vettel had the finger. its etched in my psyche watching the finger while alonso couldnt get past petrov :( :( :( :(

Perez would have still been third even if Verstappen would have let him pass in Brasil.

If you look at Verstappen's performance and some of the bad luck Leclerc had I think Perez lost 2nd more due to his own performance and not so much because his team mate didn't help him in a single race. The RBR definitely had enough speed.
