Max’s post-race interviews should settle any questions as to why he got the penalty for the collision with Lewis, though quite a few former drivers feel it was 50-50:
“He had no intention to give me space and I had no intention to back out.”
F1 interview
“If you don’t leave me space then we come together.”
V Sport interview
“I went around the outside and I immediately [?] felt he was not going to leave space, so I just went for it. He didn’t leave me space so I knew we were going to get together. It cost him the race win. For me it gave me five seconds. It wouldn’t have mattered anything for my race because we were just way too slow. It’s just a shame, you know. I thought we could race quite well together but clearly the intention was not there to race.”
Sky Sports interview
I still don’t understand the obliviousness of saying he could “race quite well together” with someone when he clearly knows he could have stayed behind and tried again at T4 like almost everyone else who couldn’t make a T1-T2 pass stick. He almost never gives space but always expects it. Some people said Russell backed out of the same move on Max several times in the sprint race, but I only have to think back to T1, lap 1 of the race and Lando backing out of a very similar move on Perez (late-braking up the inside, two wheels off track, but knowing the kerb would send him into Perez and so backing off to fight another corner).
I remain convinced that he’s a top-tier driver but continue to think of him as a poor wheel-to-wheel racer in some respects. He’s impatient and presumptive.
Holding a grudge over Monaco seems beyond petty. Checo was as integral as Newey, Honda, and Masi to his title last year and continued to move over for him this year. I’d be surprised if he’ll continue to do so next year. F1 would be better with less compliant “number two” drivers.
Speaking of Masi, the new FIA director forgot to unlap all the cars before the restart. Tsunoda said he felt bullied.
It won’t happen, but it’s crazy to think that Russell is even mathematically able to get second place in the drivers’ championship if he wins the last race and LeClerc and Perez take each other out. That’s how bad Ferrari have been and reliable Russell/Merc have been.
