Formula 1 - 2008 Season

I think he's right. Fuel stops have done nothing for the excitement of the sport and in my opinion have made it even duller.

Before them drivers had to overtake on the track rather than knowing how much fuel someone else is going to take on their next stop and getting the gap small enough so they can overtake them that way.

I'm struggling to even come up with a reason for KERS in road cars. If I want something that goes a bit faster at the push of a button I will just by a faster car and stamp on the accelerator and enjoy it as it keeps on going until I say stop, not when it's "energy burst" runs out.
:?: KERS isn't about a boost button in road cars, but taking the energy from breaking and use that energy to accelerate the car reducing fuel consumption.

I think the refuelling idea by DC is a good one and it's a much better one than having just one set of tyres for an entire race. I would also like to see engine development reinstated OR total, unavoidable freeze in engine spec so that teams that are "too nice" don't get punished unfairly. Renault should have continued with development on that "reliability" clause, because Ferrari most certainly have. If they hadn't, Massa wouldn't have had his engine blow up on him in Hungary.

Regarding KERS, I am in agreement with Mike Gascoyne, that it is an engineering challenge on the same scale as almost everything else in F1. It is much better that the batteries explode now so they know the limits instead of batteries exploding during races due to them not knowing how far to push.

2.6 second push-to-pass with 80 bhp more will add a new dimension of tactics for the teams and drivers and will allow the drivers to show how wily they are more spectacularly.

So basically what needs to happen is get back the early 90's cars (slicks, no billion winglets, cool looking), glue the modern cockpits on them for safety and fit them with KERS.

Well slicks & removal of (most) extra wings is happening already

Thats why I sayd they need to dust of the early 90's cars :p

Oh and maybe they need to bring active suspension back. I still remember that video of I believe williams having their car ''dance'' in the pitbox.

Bear in mind that another change for 2009 is that drivers will be allowed to change downforce settings twice during a lap (which is a somewhat arbitary number - not sure I'm that keen on this particular change).

Will it be within the tolerances we have now (a few "turns") or?

Edit: found it:

Section 3.18 of the regulations contains details of "driver adjustable bodywork". The angle of incidence of elements in a defined area forward of the front wheels can be varied by up to 6 degrees and adjusted by direct driver input. A maximum of 2 adjustments can be made on any lap.

sorry if ive got this wrong but wernt you arguing for more aerodymic downforce not too long ago ?

I dont think so? Well, yes. Lowering the cars would be good for aerodynamics and just the old big wings without the million of winglets and shapy thingies would be good too (like the 93 cars were able to race nose to back all the time).

orce India recently started using on its 2008 car what boss Mike Gascoyne referred to as an 'inerter damper'.

'J-damper' was simply a codename developed by McLaren and the technology's inventor to put their rivals off the scent of what the device actually did.

So "inerter" dampers are allowed, but mass dampers aren't? What's the difference? Anyone know?

Drivers that are supposed to have a superlicense do not leave pits like Räikkönen just did. What is he, color blind? This is where Kimi finally lost the championship this year.

Or indeed how Massa left the pits. Looks like the stewards have bottled the decision though - they're going to look at the incident after the race.

what a mess you dont want someone winning recieving the trophy and a couple of hours later having to give it back..

Well, it would be interesting to see in car cam of Massa leaving the pits to see if he had the green light. Kimi certainly left under yellow light.

More like a red one. The Massa case is different though. Its not the drivers job to check out the other cars in the pits. The team decides when its safe to let hem go. You cant expect massa to see other cars coming when he can hardly turn his head and only see mechanics in his mirrors. Besides I dont even understand why people talk about this. It happens so often. Massa saw Sutil on time and Sutil didnt even had to steer away so really nothing happend other than them leaving close, which isnt really that uncommon.

The whole Raikonnen thing is just stupid. I dont know what is going on be he really doesnt seem to be focussed for the last few races. And what he did now is just stupid. He didnt even wait for the team to let him go, he just went off in a effort to come out in front of Heiki.

Massi will get a time penalty, one no one has ever seen before, 5 seconds so the FIA can still have Ferrari winning.
