Q: (Michael Schmidt – Auto Moto und Sport) Robert, did you realise what happened on your left side when you were waiting for the lights at the pit lane exit?
RK: Yeah. First of all I heard a big shunt and then I saw Lewis over the rear wing of Kimi. It was a similar situation to last year when we pitted under the safety car and there was still a red light (at the pit lane exit). Last year Fisichella and Massa went by, I stopped as the first car. This time I stopped side by side with Kimi and after a few seconds Lewis came flat out and crashed into him. I have to thank him that he chose Kimi and not me.
You get DQ not drive through if you went off on the red light. I remember Montoya did it few years ago.
Massa and Fisichella got DQ'ed at this very track last year for that offence.
The rule isn't quite clear on that. I seem to remember someone did get a stop and go penalty instead of a black flag for the same offence this season.
Whitmarsh slams severe penalty
McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh has questioned why Lewis Hamilton was handed such a severe penalty for his Canadian crash, while Kimi Raikkonen wasn't punished for his Monaco incident.
Following Sunday's Canadian GP, Hamilton was handed a ten-grid slot penalty for the next race in France after he failed to stop for a red light at the end of pit lane, crashing into a stationary Kimi Raikkonen.
"It's disappointing," Whitmarsh said of the penalty. "It's a decision the stewards have made so we've got to now make the best we can out of it."
However, that doesn't mean the McLaren CEO agrees with the penalty, citing Raikkonen's lack of punishment for crashing into Adrian Sutil in Monaco.
Asked by Autosport if he felt Hamilton's penalty was severe, Whitmarsh said: "It is."
He added: "There was a different view taken in Monaco so we've got to work with what we're given."
No surprise as Ferrari support Lewis penalty
Not that this should come as a surprise but Ferrari are in support of the Montreal stewards decision to penalise Lewis Hamilton for his crash with Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton took himself and Raikkonen out of the race when he failed to notice the red light at the end of pit lane after the first round of stops, crashing into the back of Raikkonen's stationary Ferrari.
The accident earned Hamilton a ten-grid slot penalty for the French GP, which Ferrari have come out in support of.
"It was a serious mistake from Hamilton and I think the penalty imposed by the FIA is in line with it, even if it does not restore what was a lost opportunity for us," said team boss Stefano Domenicali.
Meanwhile a Ferrari official took a dig at Hamilton following the accident saying: "It was just like father like son."
The official was referring to Hamilton's father Anthony's crash five days ago when he drove a Porsche supercar through a hedge and into a playground.
