Fact: Nintendo to release HD console + controllers with built-in screen late 2012

sony said that in order to reduce the ngp bom they will use more and more outsourced component, so it can be not the ngp, but 8Mp?

Did they say outsourced components or off-the-shelf components ?

8mp only for photo taking. Video will be lower res. By 2012, they may be small n cheap.

Interesting if Kaz's division choose to use OmniVision instead of Sony's.

Just one though, what do you think that are the chances of Nintendo partnering not only with some online services provider, but also with some add some big multimedia company fora bigger living room experience.

Let say with (someone like) Canonical and have a a custom Ubuntu/Linux and its great PC casual user desktop/netbook experience. Or other company/product like that.

Today Ubuntu is great if you do mainly internet, media (video, audio) consumption, or office and the like.It the fixed HW they wouldnt have any problems too.

That way it could provide a quite good multimedia experience, without speeding to much.

It would be very interesting IMO...

Nintendo has never shown any interest in creating anything other than a game console...

They may eventually be forced to do so, though.

This is an interesting question.
Nintendo knows they are a toy maker. They make toys for kids and adults, and have (wisely IMHO) never shown much interest in making "media hubs" or "claiming the living-room". That is not to say that their devices haven't offered extra services, but rather that they have added functionality to them, and that apart from possibly the Wii they haven't been conceived and designed as multifunction devices.

By and large I think that keeping the focus on making a machine for playing games rather than trying to make it serve a multitude of corporate agenda has played out quite well for them. They have dominated sales of both stationary and portable consoles, after all.

How will they respond if people want more services? They could provide not much more than a browser, and let people serve themselves on the net. (Which is quite attractive.) They could partner with content providers to set up a fixed framework of services. Or they could develop their own environment for on-line game play and purchases, quite possibly in conjunction with a few content providers. By statements made, it sounds as if they will bring in third party software for on-line functionality.

Personally, I have very little need or want of proprietary environments, so since I have to pay for this as a consumer, I hope they only provide a minimal framework and a decent browser. I have no desire to pay for anything else than games really. However people who spend much of their time with games (and significantly, this includes reviewers and other industry folk) may feel differently, and I'm sure Nintendo want to avoid being perceived as too behind their time regardless of actual customer needs/wants. The software side of their E3 announcements will be easily as interesting as their hardware.

Part of the appeal of Wii for me was that it did not have a robust online community, I didn't want my nieces and nephew (I bought them a system 3 years ago) gaming online with all the swearing or meeting people who might be child molesters etc.

IMO Nintendo seems to have their own ecosystem, they write the best software on their systems and design their hardware with their needs in mind, they don't really need 3rd party support and have enough of a fan based interested in Mario, Donkey Kong, et al to support a thriving software\hardware platform all on their own. They are the Disney of the video game industry in terms of IP.

Social Gaming is here to stay. If Nintendo doesn't create a better online infrastructure they'll simply be left behind next generation with shrinking marketshare. Friend codes is friggen dumb, they need something like LIVE.

Nintendo thought they didn't need to compete on the hardware front too and are now back pedaling and playing catchup with declining sales.

I think the Wii had great social gaming in the local sense; 4 people playing Wii sports in the living room was social in ever sense of the word. WRT technology, Nintendo has been very clear that they will only release new technology when they think it can provide new and compelling experiences. It will interesting to see what they come up with this time.

Nintendo was right in their decision, the Wii was a success, no matter how you look at it.
In 5 years, they sold 86 million consoles at a (ever growing) profit, they brought non-gamers to play their games and expanded the gaming market, for which Sony and MS have nothing but to thank them.

Nintendo consoles have a 5-6 year span, and the Wii couldn't have better served that lifespan, given the (low) amount of R&D resources they've dedicated to it.
Sure, the sales have been declining for the past year, but they're still owning a huge part of mindshare and they're still on time to control the market again with a new console in early 2012.

Does anyone know how many titles have been sold per console for the Wii/PS/XB? I have a hunch that Wii is way behind the rest in that regard.

Yeah and the new console is claimed to be MUCH more powerful which means more expensive which means no profit from hardware for the first couple years after launch. In other words they've backpedaled from their Wii business model.

It would be interesting to know what the current attach rate is along with the current 1st party attach rate is especially for the Wii.

We don't know what the hardware is, how much will the console cost to the public and either it'll be sold at a loss or not (I doubt it will, as Nintendo has never done that before).

They're not "backpedaling from their Wii business model". They're using a different approach for a different era, with different conditions.
Nintendo has (much) more money now, HDTV and broadband internet adoption is sky-high, online social interactivity is the "new black", etc.

If Nintendo didn't have the ability to adapt each console to its contemporary needs, the company would be long gone by now.

Starting to have a nasty suspicion we wont see much of Wii2 at E3. Hopefully I can see myself being way wrong though.

It's just odd NOTHING has leaked this close to E3. Beginning to think we may just get a couple CG videos crapped out or some such horrible scenario. Uggh.

I was thinking though, the supposed possible 250GB 360 +Kinect $100 price cut , actually is almost a necessity in the face of Wii2. A 399 Kinect 360 wont be very compelling in the fact of a hypothetical $350-400 Wii2 with more power and all Nintendos gadgets now will it.

E3 would be too early unless Wii2 releases this year, wich i doubt. The may cut price but not for that reason. With the way 360 is selling at the moment though i dont think a pricecut is needed.

Where have you been since April 25th?

Nintendo said:
We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

The lack of last-days leaks is indeed weird. Maybe those "SDK 1.3 final specs" were true and there's not much more to leak?

We could already have almost everything:
- Console and controller shape
- Tech specs
- Controller with camera, 6" touchscreen with tactille feedback, analog controls, etc
- Wii and GC backwards-compatibility
