DriveClub by Evolution Studios [PS4]

Only if the game uses more AF and better AA it would look perfect. Oh well the weather patch should make it even more realistic.

I put a good 10 hours + into the game now, all driving with gyro controls. Got up to level 22 and well into Semi-Pro. The game has some amazingly subtle effects that really struck me. For instance, I was hotlapping one of the early time trial events trying to get the gold with the New Beetle, which wasn't in fact very easy, and then just seeing how far I could push it. It was cloudy, but at one point, after quite a lot of laps, suddently the sun briefly broke through the clouds, and you could see the area lit up by the sun come up in the distance and then you were driving in the sun for a little while, after which it got cloudy again. Then slowly fog came up as it got dark.

I do understand people referencing PGR when it comes to the driving model - there's certainly a similarity, though the car behavior is perhaps a bit more realistic still. So far I can't really understand the complaints about any of the penalties - all that just seems far for this kind of racer. In fact I think they are on the light side - I've had a few times where I benefited from a penalty situation.

I have to reiterate - kudos to the track design, they are really good. The higher level races get pretty darn hard though!

I also finally managed to join a club, and had a full online race. I drove a car and track that I hadn't driven before, but still managed to get 3rd out of 10.

The leaderboards still aren't in. Also, when I was driving earlier, I had a brief period where online connections crashed my game three times in a row when it had just connected to the server, though never at a bad moment fortunately. I think they've disabled the leaderboards and in-game records for now, to ease the load and allow for online races.

The successful gyro steering though is a big thing for me. It has made this the best track based racing game to play with a controller for me since forever. I hope Sony makes it mandatory for all games. Maybe I'll tweet Yoshi about it.

You can play online race without club. Just go to tour/multiplayer.

I was able to play multiplayer last night, but I've had no luck today. :(

I need to level up and gain more cars so at least I'm better able to progress online.

I agree with Arwin's comments above, it's more sim than PGR ever was.

Edit: I really like it a lot. I don't understand the Eurogamer/Gamespot/IGN scores at all.

I like it too. Had several online races yesterday. It was in general good, except some idiots crashing into you to take over your place.

I've been driving some races from the single player in the pagani, and pfff, that is insane. I would never drive those sandy roads in India with a car like that ... ! First time though I've really needed to feather the throttle coming out of a turn up to 3rd, 4th gear.

So, I picked up DriveClub a couple days ago.

I wouldn't mind corner penalties if this game had some way of indicating where the penalized corners are.

As it is, it it makes the game feel annoying in an unresponsive way.

Visually it's interesting.

Clouds and other atmospherics are very impressive, and the lighting frequently does an excellent job making the scene feel grounded. You really do feel like you're driving through a spatial location. The use of HDR can be delightful.

A lot of areas are too barren to really "complete" the visual style... this is a pretty big issue for the pre-race flyovers.

Direct sunlight can be hit-or-miss. On the plus side, the specularity can look nice, like off the snow in Norway. On the not-quite-as-plus side, some things don't react as well (sometimes hills can attain a plasticky appearance, foliage can look very wierdly-lit and almost emissive), and shadowing on small high-frequency stuff is problematic (i.e. non-existent).

Whoever put together the water textures deserves to be glanced at with an exasperated expression. Several times.

you guys makes me more and more cant stand this PS+ waiting >_<

a temptation to buy the asia version (40 dollar full ver, not ps plus upgrade).

I like India tracks :) A lot of leaves, hovering over the road trees.

Yeah, probably a matter of taste - I think they're some of the best looking.

Anyway, I thought it would be nice to upload a small video of a hotlap on a more traditional 'racing track'. I think the track designer deserves some credit by the way for creating a really good track, really love it. First time I uploaded this by exporting to USB and then uploading to Youtube btw.

I drove this using Motion Controlled steering using the Dual Shock 4, and I bet you'll be hard pressed to tell, it looks just like as if I drove it with a wheel.

Lap was not perfect yet, but pretty good (certainly good enough for 2 secs under gold anyway). Also tried it with the Lotus first, that was a handful (as it seems to be in a lot of games).

nice driving.

the racetracks are really well done, my favorites being norway and scotland, they feel real.

to me it's like every second of playing this game is worth taking a screenshot or recording a video :D
