I agree completely. This comparison actually showed how close the IQ is between the two consoles and PS4's extra horsepower is probably largely irrelevant. This game is a worse case scenario for X1 and to the average gamer they will look pretty close.

Two assertions I see no evidence for. Carry on.

As to worst case, we may have a new one already. Mark Rubin confirmed 720P XB1, 1080P PS4 on twitter.

Microsoft paid massive massive amounts for the definitive version of BF4 for Xbox One. Not just a bakers dozen million. Considering the small install base both systems will have and the small number of BF4 PS4 titles sold lifetime wise, I wouldn't be surprised if EA intentionally made had DICE scale back the ps4 version with this poor quality scaling or blur filter. Its not enough to disuade any PS4 owners from buying the game, but it is enough to fulfill EA's side of this lucrative EA-MS partnership deal give the leg up on the Xbox One version.

EA would completely fail in its end of the deal if despite having less DLC and exclusive content, ps4 had the graphically superior version. EA had to do something last minute graphics wise to tip the scale back. LoD poly count for some distant objects is also greater on the PS4 version and the great/unfortunate thing about the blur/scaling is it blurs out detail of distant objects.

Except Dice got it backwards and the X1 version came out horrible! *evil laugh

I will be more interested in seeing both versions after release, with the X1 version not even complete for this review purpose and probably the same on the PS4 side. I watched a X1 vs 360 video and was left with the thought that this is all down to a cross-gen title. But 2k seems to have gotten things right, so I don't know.

EA is smarter than this, if they push too hard for one platform over another they risk giving one platform holder a monopoly which is not in their best interest. The issues with blur are being reported by one site, so its likely an issue on their end.

Further more RL called out someone on their team who publicly said somethings about how they captured the images so who knows what is going on at DF but I doubt either DF or EA/Dice is purposely trying to help MS here. Anyone who reads the article on DF can see that over and over they state that the PS4 version is superior to the XB1.

It's not rocket science Solarus. DF did the following:

- set up capturing for Xbox One, using Full RGB (0-255) at 1080p60fps and capture footage
- set up capturing for Playstation 4 using Full RGB (0-255) at 1080p60fps and capture footage
- set up capturing for PC using Full RGB (0-255) at 1080p60fps and capture footage

There is limited time, as this is done on location ....

The Xbox One footage comes out broken, because simply, the Full RGB out on the Xbox is 'broken', possibly on purpose, as this is not the first time - they did something similar with the 360. I made histograms of screenshots back then, and the 360 always crushed colors at the dark end of the spectrum, leading to irrecoverable color information loss.
The black crush on the 360 had to do with the piecewise gama curve aproximation. If you treated the assets as having a normal gamma curve, you get the crush. The X-One does not have the same issue. This is probably just an HDMI driver issue where it doesn't successfully negotiate a full 0-255 colour space, and falls back to the traditional video 16-235 colour space.

If that's true it would represent a first, I've never, ever heard of dev intentionally borking one version over another. That would have caused a mutiny back in the day, I'd be shocked and awe'd if that actually took place.

Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we’re native 1080p on PS4. We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction. Can’t wait for next week's launch.

not sure trolling, or just trolling.

The chance of keeping that a secret is minimal at best. And the number of questions EA and DICE would have to answer for the next many years doesn't make the millions worth it :)

Man i would really like DF to let us know why they have blur, when others apparently doesn't.

I chose Expanded in my Xbox 360 and it seems to work fine with my TV. I don't find a single setting on the TV which allows me to select Full RGB -it is a 2013 model, so it should accept full RGB, who knows...-, yet the picture looks great regardless.

Since HDMI allows the two devices to negotiate the best settings, I set the Reference Levels to Auto and that's it.

Besides that, the addition of Standard, Intermediate and Expanded RGB had crept its way into the Dashboard when Xbox 360 VGA cables were very popular and the difference between how HDTV & PC displays interpreted black levels existed.

This is no longer the case, it seems, although my TV doesn't allow you to select the RGB range -Standard looks good on the TV too, so I could always switch to it-.

Arthur Gies has mentioned that the quality of your TV is going to make a huge difference.

Luckily for me the image quality of Philips TV sets from this year 2013 is really good and they don't need much tweaking, if at all. In fact there isn't much to tweak in my TV.

I found my sweet spot pretty easily.

They have a chance to knock it out of the park with the pixel fidelity though.

Jumping high fives, guys! Brand loyalty!

On a serious note, it will be interesting to see if they ever reveal what the bottleneck is, or if they think they can improve on it for the inevitable sequel. 720p is definitely a significant step down. Looking forward to some comparison vids to see how much of a difference it really makes.

Yes , but why stop at 720p ... more pixel fidelity @600p , they shoud go for that .

Come on now let us not get ridiculous. 640P brings the proper balance. 640 ought to be enough for anybody.:devilish:

ADDED: well the difference between 640 and 720 is certainly less than 720 and 900 and so I don't see why 640P wouldn't be a reasonable target for XB1 since no one is supposed to be able to tell the difference. Will 640 be the 1080 ???

That doesn't sound like a hardware issue but more of a developer issue. I wouldn't mind 720p if the per pixel quality is better and/or the game looks really good like BF4.
